Editor’s Note

Rob HowardThe Weekly News on Accordions Worldwide began in the last week of October 1996, thanks to the vision of Harley Jones, the website’s founder.

Few would disagree that the accordion needs publicity, and by the mid-1990s the Internet was fast becoming a global means of mass communication, accessible to millions. Accordions Worldwide has since 1996 offered free publicity for accordion activities, and endeavours to give the best possible service to accordionists and event promoters everywhere.

Just let us know what you are doing…

The article headed '14 Years Ago' is taken from the very first Weekly News in 1996.

Festival Internazionale di Fisarmonica, Castelfidardo – Italy

Castelfidardo banner
"We never produced so much music" is a comment by one of the organisers, meaning that the International Festival of the Accordion in Castelfidardo continues to grow in numbers of participating musicians, and also in quality of music. The combination of contests with entertainment events is a winning formula, and demonstrates to the world the infinite potential of the accordion.

Everything worked perfectly - good weather, an influx of visitors from many countries, and the city immersed in a holiday atmosphere. A giant truck placed in front of the City Hall was a popular place for visitors, where accordionists Gianni Mirizzi, Manuela Sessa and Gennaro Ruffolo played continuously. Concerts featuring international stars Frank Marocco, Richard Galliano, Coba, and Marc Perrone, drew large audiences.

The competition involved entries from 26 countries and four continents, and the jury was impressed by the high standards displayed. Competitors from China, Russia and France were especially impressive, winning many high placings.
