Gorka Hermosa Wins PIF Composition Competition – Italyby Christine Johnstone |
Video: Demo audio of "Dwarves' Tales". Gorka Hermosa (picture left - Spain) has won the 2020 PIF Classic & Ensemble Composition for Accordion Competition. The annual theme of the festival was "All the Colors of the World". Nineteen works arrived this year and the organisers were impressed with the high artistic level of the compositions. The Jury included Friedrich Lips (Chairman - Russia), Franck Angelis (France), Livio Bollani (Italy), Antonio Cericola (Italy), Bete Ilin (Macedonia), Pascale Martinez (France), Petri Makkonen (Finland), Massimiliano Pitocco (Italy), Volodymyr Runchak (Ukraine), Simona Simonini (Italy) and Peter Soave (USA). Gorka Hermosa’s composition "Dwarves' Tales" was originally commissioned by the Berliner Philarmoniker for the Spring Festival in Berlin, an event postponed due to Covid-19. Gorka decided to adapt the initial ideas and orchestration for the PIF contest. 2nd place: Zhao Xiaoxiang (China), student of "Central Conservatory of Music" in Beijing. 3rd place: Wojciech Chalupka (Poland). Gorka’s "Dwarves' Tales" will be the final compulsory test piece of the PIF 2020 Premium category and will be performed in a world premiere on the final evening of the PIF competition on September 20th, 2020. |

Friedrich Lips at "Bayan and Accordion Stars", Moscow - Russiaby Ivan Dyma, SaxAkkord Duo |
The 3rd and final concert in the "Bayan and Accordion Stars" series will be held at the Moscow Philharmonic Chamber Hall on March 7th, 2021, at 7 pm. This concert will include a performance by the Piazzolla-Studio quartet, which includes Friedrich Lips (picture right), who will be accompanied by Vladislav Igolinsky (violin), Kirill Rodin (cello) and Sviatoslav Lips (piano). The concert will be presented by Andrey Ustinov. Daily Report: Video pictures and results at: 2020SouthPac The New Zealand Accordion Association is hosting a very shortened version of the South Pacific International Championship Solo Classes on May 30th, 2020 because of Covid-19. The event will be online with no audience and only a few Championship solo categories with no international guests or international competitors due to lockdown rules preventing international people travelling to New Zealand. New Art Deadline for 2021 Accordion Babes Pin-Up Calendarby Rob Howard |
Accordionist Renee de la Prade has announced an art deadline extension for the 2021 edition of the Accordion Babes Pin-Up Calendar. The new deadline is July 10th, 2020. The extension gives everyone plenty of time to book plans and back-up plans for the photo shoots in these crazy times of Covid-19. Also, it will still allow her to release this calendar in September, 2020 which is when all the other calendars turn up in stores. If you would like to do a photo shoot for this edition please email Renee at: editor@accordionpinupcalendar.com As Covid-19 has also led to the cancellation of summer accordion gigs, Renee is continuing with her weekly Friday online concerts. Accordionists are welcome to book with Renee to perform at these concerts. |
Uplifting Song “Coronavirus Wails” - Russiaby Christine Johnstone |
"Coronavirus Wails" by Russian group "Ayushka" is a song about the trials and tribulations of the Covid-19 quarantine in Russian language with English subtitles. With the lockdown still in place in many parts of the world, Sverdlovsk Philharmonic's Ayushka Russian folk group which includes accordionist Vladimir Zykin (picture left), came up with this song, quite uplifting despite the gloomy name. Performers: Artistic Director, Honored Artist of Russia Vladimir Zykin (accordion), Mikhail Bedarev (vocals), Evgenia Drokina (domra) and Artem Kirillov (balalaika). Music by A. Vladimirtsev (arranged by V. Zykin), lyrics by K. Ryzhov (arr.V. Zykin). The group wish positive thoughts to everyone around the world! |

Following the cancellation of the August Stowe Tango Music Festival and Bandoneon International Competition because of Covid-19, organisers have announced the festival has moved online this year. Festival performances will begin this weekend with music workshops, conversations & interviews with guests and more! Upcoming events include: May 30th at 2:30pm (ET): Cuarteto Rotterdam (picture below) which includes Michael Dolak (bandoneon), Susanne Cordula Welsch (violin), Judy Ruks (piano) and Anna-Maria Huhn (double bass). Crooners Supper Club in Minneapolis (MN), will begin their drive-in concerts next week entitled “Live at Crooners” along with other in-house dining and concert experiences as permitted by the state’s guidelines. This is a safe, socially-distanced series that will continue indefinitely due to Covid-19. On June 3rd, Dan Newton's Cafe Accordion Orchestra will perform with special guest Brian Barnes, beginning at 7pm. They will play a mix of French flare, Latin heat and Bohemian attitude along with swing, ballads, tangos, cha chas, rumbas, and cumbias to create a wonderfully varied show. Mabon’s “The Last Huzzah!” Tour Moved to 2021 - UKby Christine Johnstone |
Popular Welsh Band “Mabon” had planned their “Last Huzzah!” Tour for 2020, however Covid-19 foiled their farewell tour. So, instead of retiring gracefully this summer as planned, they have rescheduled as many as possible of their cancelled gigs into one noisy burst next spring – March to May 2021. They will still play one last, vibrant blast of MABON music, which is planned for the Easter holidays of 2021. At this stage, no tickets will be for sale as many venues are closed. Further confirmation details will be released as soon as possible. The band includes Jamie Smith (accordion & vocals), Oliver Wilson-Dickson (fiddle & vocals), Ron Juppy (guitar & vocals), Matt Downer (electric & upright basses & vocals) and Iolo Whelan (drums, percussion & vocals). 2021 Tour dates are: 30th March: CARDIFF - Saint David's Hall 31st March: DEVON - Pavilions Teignmouth 1st April: LONDON - Cecil Sharp House 3rd April: LIVERPOOL - Philharmonic Hall 6th April: DORSET - Bridport Arts Centre 7th April: NOTTINGHAM - Lakeside Arts 9th April: BUILTH WELLS - Wyeside Arts 10th April: CARDIGAN - Theatr Mwldan Further dates will be released shortly. Accordionists have taken part in the 9th May broadcast, WAD2020 presenting a variety of interviews and videos from around the world. WAD2020 9th May includes: An introduction by Xu Xiaonan (China) speaking about his experience at the CIA Coupe Mondiale where he was the first Chinese Coupe Mondiale winner in 2012 in Spoleto, Italy. He then performs his own composition “Breeze in Summer” with pianist Xu Gehui. A performance by Matthias Matzke (Germany) who won the Coupe Mondiale Junior Virtuoso Entertainment class in 2011 and the Digital Accordion class in 2014. Matthias performs Ghost Love Score – Nightwish. An interview with DHV Vice President Georg Hettman who gives information about the DHV such as what the organisation offers, where they operate and members of the organisation. He then presents a performance by the HUMI Accordion band (Poland), 1st place winners of the Mixed Instrumentation Orchestra Youth division at the Innsbruck Festival. Georg Hettman is then joined by CIA Music Committee member Andreas Nebl and the CEO of the Hohner Konservatorium, Bernhard van Almsick who give interesting interviews regarding musical styles and how the school assists students to find their own musical style. This is followed with a video performance by Felix Fritschi. A performance by past Coupe Mondiale winner Valerio Russo, who performs a composition by Renzo Ruggieri. An interesting interview and performance with Vincent van Amsterdam from NOVAM (Netherlands) and performances from their 90th anniversary celebration concert. This is followed by information on the accordion in The Netherlands. Interview and performance with the Royal Danish Academy of Music Professor, Geir Draugsvoll who talks about the Academy, teachers, programs etc. along with various performance videos. Interview and performance with Mikk Langeproon from Eesti Akordioniliit (Estonian Accordion Society) who talks about their society, members and events organised by them. WAD2020 includes: An introduction and performance by 2019 CIA Coupe Mondiale winner Kirill Rusinov A welcome by Grayson Masefield (New Zealand) and Kevin Friedrich (USA) Information and plans for the 2020 73rd CIA Coupe Mondiale hosted by the Accordion Association of Algarve, Portugal from October 5th to 11th, 2020 Information and performances from the Czech Accordion Association – accordionist Milan Rehak likes to entertain by playing something different, performing a fascinating arrangement of “Bach Meets ACDC” Interview with Motion Trio and world premiere of a new work by Motion Trio and the Ratingen Kammerchoir entitled “Helicopter” to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Motion Trio playing together. The CD will be released soon. Performances at 2019 CIA Coupe Mondiale (Shenzhen, China) by winners and concert performers, plus 2019 Shanghai Spring International Accordion Festival and a new composition by Nova Wan were all featured in the China Accordion Association segment.
