‘Day of Bayan & Accordion & Harmonica 2013’, Moscow – Russia

Friedrich Lips playing infront during his performance
Michail BurlakovBayan, accordion and harmonica were always popular in Russia. And on the fronts of the ‘great patriotic war’, at celebrations such as weddings, they were an irreplaceable companion in everyday Russian life.

In 1948, the folk instruments received a new impetus when a Chair was opened at the Gnessin Institute (now Academy) in Moscow. The former folk musician finally got the opportunity to train on a par with pianists and violinists.

In all parts of the large country, conservatories and high schools opened chairs for the new academic instrument, and since that time, Russian bayanists and accordionists have enjoyed tremendous successes at the most prestigious international competitions.

Nowadays the most important composers of Russia are writing for our instrument: S. Gubaidulina, A. Cholminov, R. Ledenyov, E. Podgaits, M. Bronner, A. Shurbin, etc.

Bayanists/accordionists are performing in the biggest concert halls in the world. Given the generally difficult economic situation in the country and the resulting problems for the cultural life, the Chair for bayan and accordion Prof Friedrich Lips has now invited all colleagues in this huge country, to create the All-Russian Day of Bayan, Accordion and Harmonica.

That event took place on Saturday March 16th, thus also launching the ‘World Accordion Day’, promoted by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA), held every year on May 6th.

The program of the Moscow concert included:
Friedrich Lips soloist (picture above) for ‘Seven Jewish songs’ by M. Bronner for bayan and chamber orchestra (Moscow Premiere). Moscow Chamber Orchestra (Vladislav Bulachov, conductor) – ‘The Seasons’ Michail Burlakov (bayan, picture left) and Swjetlana Furnik (organ) - K.Volkov: ‘Skladen’ for bayan and organ, Madina Zalojewa - Ossetian harmonica, Marat Sazajew - Douli, Jelena Radchenko - flute, Tsitsi Gioyeva – piano: Potpourri – ‘Themes of Caucasian melodies’ and F. Alborow: Fantasy on ‘Oh, my love’.

Frédéric GuérouetDuring his concert at Médiathèque Marguerite Duras, Paris on Saturday March 23rd, Frédéric Guérouet gave the first performance of Ida Gotkovsky’s ‘Rhapsody for Accordion’ in the presence of the composer.

Also performed were some major works of the contemporary accordion repertoire by Alain Abbott, Sofia Gubaidulina, Magnus Lindberg, Alain Margoni and others. An exhibition of CD's and scores of Ida Gotkovsky and works for accordion in collaboration with les éditions Gérard Billaudot was organized in the hall.

Frédéric Guérouet began his accordion studies at the age of six with his father and then with Médard Ferrero. At the age of 11, he performed in Salle Pleyel, the most prestigious concert hall of Paris.

After the death of his teacher, he continued his studies with Joe Rossi. In September 1975, he was admitted to the Conservatory of Music of Kiev in the Ukraine in the class of Vladimir Besfamilnov.

After winning numerous awards, he began a solo career, which led him throughout Europe and on to such places as Buenos Aires and Tokyo. Besides his solo career, he has accompanied many artists such as Barbara Hendricks, or young soloists such as Rachid Safir.

He played in the Quartet of Accordions of Paris with Richard Galliano, Valérie Guérouet and Joe Rossi. Today, Guérouet moves more and more towards creation and composition, encouraged by Philippe Hersant, Thierry Escaich and Henri Dutilleux.

Corrado Rojac Master Class, Pesaro - Italy

Corrado RojacVideo above: "Metric Expansion of Space" by Edgar-Barroso played by Corrado Rojac performed at Harvard University, USA. Program notes below.

On March 26th and 28th this year accordionist Corrado Rojac, from Trieste, gave a masterclass at the Conservatory "G. Rossini" in Pesaro.

Invited by Maestro Paolo Vignani, accordion teacher at the Institute of Pesaro, Corrado Rojac gave a lecture-concert about literature for accordion, with particular reference to the music of Giuseppe Greggiati, a Mantua musician to whom we owe much for our repertoire for accordion in Italy, and Donatoni, the famous Milanese composer who dedicated a song to the accordion, ‘Feria IV’, for which Corrado Rojac gave a short analysis.

The meeting also organised some lessons by Corrado Rojac to talented students, dealing with music by Berio, Lundquist, Trojan and Rendine.

Video program notes: "Metric Expansion of Space" by Edgar-Barroso

The metric expansion of space is the increase of distance between distant objects in a space that is constantly expanding, like the universe. Even though the universe is expanding, is not expanding into anything outside of itself.

I imagine this expansion as very violent and extreme. The piece expands certain material into itself, a sort of a force that is trying to reach the unreachable, but has no place to go but to return to his own mass. With an obsessive obstinate rhythmic structure and with spasms of energy that revolves in its own velocity, range and capacity, the accordion becomes a machine which receives a non-stop stream of energy from the player.

These bursts of energy can be measured between several nearby points in space with a very precise compositional strategy. The piece uses amplification as a continuation of the idea of being continuing expanding.

I can't think of a better performer than Corrado Rojac, he is energetic, precise and yet sensitive to convey the beauty raised from an obsessive behavior. We are very lucky to have him with us.

The project is not for profit, and brings together music aficionados and newbies under one roof to celebrate excellent music and brilliant performances.
