‘Scenes of Shetland’ DVD, Shetland – UK

‘Scenes of Shetland’ DVD cover‘Scenes of Shetland’ is a 30 minutes film giving a bird’s eye view of the rugged beauty of Shetland, covering the areas of Central Mainland, Scalloway, The North Isles, North Mainland, The Westside, and South Mainland. There is no commentary, and none is needed as the ever changing and often spectacular scenes speak for themselves. The views of the coastlines, cliffs and seas are especially striking. The aerial images are perfectly complemented by the lively music of the Peter Wood Shetland Dance Band, playing Scottish dance tunes plus a fabulous Swedish waltz composed by the great Carl Jularbo (Sweden’s answer to Jimmy Shand). Peter Wood is a fine accordionist and accordion teacher, who really knows what makes Scottish dance music tick, and ensemble playing is spot on.

The picture quality and camera work are both excellent. The blurb on the cover says ‘The DVD Picture Postcard From Shetland’, which is a fair description, and the music soundtrack could stand alone as CD release. All in all, a first class production, and credit to all involved. The DVD is available via the Peter Wood Shetland Dance Band website.

Music tracks: Jigs - The Weaver/Paddy MacDonald’s Breeks/Stoneypath Tower; Jigs – Mrs Macpherson of Cluny/Lizzie Duncan’s Fancy/Saddle the Pony/The Murray River; Reels – Roxburgh Castle/Calver Lodge/The New High Level; Swedish Waltz – Nya Varmlandvalsen (C. Jularbo); Waltzes (all composed by Peter Wood) – Hamish’s Boat/Da Sea Get Waltz/Emillie’s Waltz; Gay Gordons – The Auld Square (P.Wood); Hornpipes – The Ton/The Rose Tree/Bill Sutherland

Weird Science: Bond with your kids - and crank the music

By: Jamie Morton
Science Reporter, New Zealand Herald newspaper

Sharing music with your kids while they're young can help your relationships later in life, researchers say.

Most siblings have memories of - happily or unhappily - listening to whatever Mum or Dad had on the car radio on long trips away.

In our unfortunate case, that was endless doses of Jim Reeves, Kenny Rogers and, if we were really unlucky, Engelbert Humperdinck.

But now researchers say sharing music can do wonders for parents' future relationships with their sons and daughters.

"If you have little kids, and you play music with them, that helps you be closer to them, and later in life will make you closer to them," said the University of Arizona's Professor Jake Harwood, co-author of a new study.

"If you have teenagers and you can successfully listen to music together or share musical experiences with them, that has an even stronger effect on your future relationship and the child's perception of the relationship in emerging adulthood."

Harwood and his colleagues surveyed a group of young adults, average age 21, about the frequency with which they engaged with their parents, as children, in activities such as listening to music together, attending concerts together or playing musical instruments together.

Participants reported on their memories of experiences they had between ages 8 and 13 and age 14 and older.

They also shared how they perceive their relationship with their parents now.

Although shared musical experiences at all age levels were associated with better perceptions of parent-child relationship quality in young adulthood, the effect was most pronounced for shared musical experiences during adolescence.

"With young kids, musical activity is fairly common - singing lullabies, doing nursery rhymes," Harwood said.

"With teenagers, it's less common, and when things are less common you might find bigger effects, because when these things happen, they're super important."

Giorgio Albanese Concert @ Brooklyn Accordion Club, New York – USA

Giorgio AlbaneseOn Sunday July 1st, 2pm until 3.45pm, Brooklyn Accordion Club presents Giorgio Albanese in concert. Admission is $5.

Giorgio Albanese was born in Ostuni, Italy. He has represented Italy three times at the World Accordion Championships with successes at 30 national and international competitions.

In 2009 he gained a degree in ‘Jazz Music’ at the ‘Niccolò Piccinni’ Conservatory, Bari, and in 2012 specialized in ‘New Language Composition and Interpretation’ at the ‘Nino Rota’ Conservatory, Monopoli, achieving distinction both times. He is currently in the USA studying at Berklee College of Music.

Giorgio Albanese has worked with many leading musicians, and has also been actively involved in a wide variety of musical projects that span traditional as well as more contemporary jazz, working across multidiscipline arts such as theatre, dance and cinema. His music is influenced by world sounds and sound experimentation, producing a more profound, intrinsic language of music.

After his academic studies he focused on developing his own approach to music completely independent from the predominant aesthetic standards. This approach has enabled him to conceive the accordion as a ‘modern’ sound and language, a synthesis of a rich artistic journey which finds its origins in the language of contemporary jazz.

His original, musical works were used in the short film ‘L’ultima partenza’. He has composed music for theatre and has experimented with the interaction between sound and video, and more generally between visual arts and music, always looking for the most innovative ways of making art. He leads workshops and master classes on jazz accordion, including musical improvisation workshops inspired by both the Afro-American jazz tradition and European contemporary music.

He works on different projects and has performed in Italy, France, Argentina, UK, USA, Australia, China, South Korea, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Egypt, Morocco, Croatia, and Finland.

Brooklyn Accordion Club meets at the Great Room at the LuEsther T. Mertz South Oxford Space/A.R.T., 138 South Oxford Street (between Atlantic Avenue and Fulton Street), Brooklyn, NY 11 217.
