‘Accordions at the Castle’, Blackpool – UK

‘Accordions at the Castle’ took place May 15th to 20th at the Norbreck Castle, a large hotel in Blackpool, Lancashire, and proved to be a great success.

Ably organized by Heather Smith, this festival included workshops: Beginners (Jean Hanger), Elementary (Rosemary Wright), Intermediate (Brian Jenkins), Jazz (Bert Santilly), Scottish (David Vernon), Buskers (Bert Santilly), Vintage (Jean Hanger), and Big Band (Romano Viazzani), and a trade show, and a buzz of enthusiasm prevailed throughout the proceedings.

There were informal concerts in the afternoons and gala-type concerts each evening, featuring a dazzling array of talent that included Romano Viazzani, David Vernon (accordion) & Dick Lee (clarinet), Rosemary Wright, Bert Santilly, Stefan Andrusyschyn (accordion) & Denise Leigh (soprano), Harry Hussey, Ken Astin, and Scottish accordionist Roy Hendrie. All the guests were on top form, and the entertainment was second to none.

The daily workshops a lot of fun, culminating in excellent performances at the final night’s concert in the ballroom by all the groups/orchestras. Most notable was the Glenn Miller music played by the Big Band, led by Romano Viazzani on Roland FR7X, and impressively augmented by Dick Lee on clarinet, Geoff Cook on sax, and Marj Howard on trumpet. The festival closed after midnight with those revellers still with some energy left dancing to the Scottish music of David Vernon, playing Heather Smith’s MusicTech digital accordion.

Next year’s festival takes place from May 13th to 18th 2012, again at the Norbreck Castle.

Composer Amy Jennings Music as NZ Test Music - New Zealand

Amy JenningsThe New Zealand Accordion Association (NZAA) has  a policy of promoting accordion compositions, especially those by NZ composers.  For the 2011 South Pacific & NZ Accordion Championships, the NZAA has selected several compositions by Amy Jennings as test music or to be featured in concerts.

‘Lazy Sunday’ and ‘Rainforest South Westland’ have been chosen as test music for two different NZ Championship categories which will be performed on June 4th 2011. ‘Hutt River Illusions’ was originally composed as a duet for Amy’s mum and a friend, however after a special request, a third part was added and is now a trio. Amy will be playing the third part at the competitions on June 4th, which will be the premiere performance of the work.

Amy Jennings has also composed two new works for the North Shore Music Makers, ‘Red Forest’ and ‘Secret Agent C7’. ‘Red Forest’ was inspired from a pop song that has beautiful melodies, and is a piece designed to challenge young players.

It has a reccurring motif throughout the piece which showcases the accordion group sound for young players. ‘Secret Agent C7’ is more of a rock piece that has challenging rhythmic pattern and is fun for young players.
