The 41st “Citta di Castelfidardo” International Accordion Competitions and Festival ran from Wednesday 21st September until Sunday 25th September.

Unprecedented Prize Money at 69th Coupe Mondiale in Rostov-on-Don - Russia

The major financial sponsor of the Coupe Mondiale 'TAVR' offered almost 5 million Russian Rubles in prize money. The unprecedented RUB 4,910,000 (almost 70,000 Euro) in prizes was the most ever offered at a Coupe Mondiale during its almost 70 year history.

Hosted by the Rostov-on-Don City Administration with the support of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) Russian member "The International Music Center 'Harmony', the 69th Coupe Mondiale, the first in Russia, was a terrific success, featuring some of the finest young accordionists from around the world.

20 year old Aleksandr Komelkov from Russia, a student of Viatcheslav Semionov won the coved title, having previously won the CIA Junior Coupe Mondiale and the Masters Coupe Mondiale before winning the 69th Coupe Mondiale title before his home country audience.

Aleksandr Komelkov, in conjunction with his Duet partner Mihail Naumov also won the International Competition for Chamber Music.

Head of the Rostov-on-Don City Administration S. I. Gorban and Coupe Mondiale organizers Yuri Shishkin (IMC Harmony President) and Alexander Poeluev (IMC Harmony Artistic Director) welcomed accordionists from around the world to their city, one with a rich history of accordion.

Participants from as far a field as New Zealand, the USA, Brazil and throughout Scandinavia and Europe gathered to take part in a spectacular series of Competitions, Concerts, Congress Meetings and social events, held in a beautiful array of venues throughout the city of Rostov-on-Don, Russia.

The TAVR prize money was awarded over eight categories of competitions as follows:

The Coupe Mondiale festival featured not only the annual series of competitions, but also an array of concerts and activities showcasing the diverse and rich history of the accordion in Rostov. Concerts included former Russian Coupe Mondiale Champions, hosts Yuri Shishkin and Alexander Poeluev performing both solo and with orchestras including the Don Orchestra, the Rostov-on-Don Conservatory Symphony Orchestra and the Rostov Academic Symphony Orchestra, along with an impressive variety of soloists through to groups performing a variety of styles from Folk to Classical to Pop music. From the 70,000 fans listening to the accordionists in the main square, to the capacity audiences in the various Theatres located throughout Rostov, the city of Rostov-on-Don was the accordion capital of the world during the 69th Coupe Mondiale festival.

2016 Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame Induction, Dundee – UK

Iain MacPhailHands Up for Trad have announced the 2016 Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame inductees, one of whom is the well-known and much admired accordionist, composer and bandleader Iain MacPhail. His award is for ‘Services to Performance’.

Another recipient is Gordon Connell, whose ‘Services to Community’ award is for very successfully teaching the accordion since 1970 on the Hebridean island of Tiree. The inductees and their families will be present at a Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame Dinner on November 11th in the Marryat Hall, (part of Caird Hall), Dundee, Scotland.

On 24 September, 2015 PIF Castelfidardo winner Hanzhi Wang made a concert at the 2016 PIF Castelfidardo Festival.

Stanislav Angelov Concert, Shumen - Bulgaria

On Tuesday September 27th, 7pm until 9pm, accordionist Stanislav Angelov performs at Shumen, Sq. Renaissance ?4, 9700 Shumen, Bulgaria.

After more than 20 years in South Africa, Stanislav Angelov returns on a visit to his native Bulgaria to perform in the city where he began his playing career. In South Africa he is well known for his love of tango music and his CT Tango Ensemble.

Jason Webley is known for his fusion of folk, rock, experimental and alternative music. He began as a street performer, playing accordion in the streets of Seattle, Washington, and has released several albums to date.

On Friday September 30th, 9pm to 11pm, (and also Friday October 7th) the David Vaughan Trio performs at Oliver's Jazz Bar, 9 Nevada Street, Greenwich, London SE10 9JL. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Vaughan is joined by accordionist Romano Viazzani and double bass and tuba player Tom Hewins for this concert. On October 7th Tom Hewins is replaced by clarinet player Daniel Broncano.

Gala d’Accordeon, Bourgneuf posterOn Saturday October 1st and Sunday October 2nd a Gala d’Accordeon takes place at the Salle Polyvalente, Bourgneuf (73), Savoie, Rhone-Alpes, south-eastern France. On Saturday evening, 7.30pm, the accordionists performing include Sebastien Geroudet, Lionel Bellouard, Evi-Danse, and Virginie and Cyril Danrey. On Sunday afternoon, 2.30pm, there is a grand dance to the music of Virginie and Cyril Danrey, and others.

HHS Bischofsheim concert with Crewe Brass, Cheshire - UK

HHS Bischofsheim Concert posterHHS Bischofsheim, an accordion orchestra from Germany, share a concert with Crewe Brass next weekend. This takes place on Saturday October 1st, 7.30pm, at St Mary’s Church in Nantwich, Cheshire, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5, available at the door.

For over six years Crewe Brass has had a strong friendship with HHS Bischofsheim,  an accordion orchestra from Crewe and Nantwich’s twin town. They first shared a stage in 2010 when Crewe Brass were invited to take part in Bischofsheim’s music festival and they have been firm friends ever since with the brass band making another trip to Germany in 2014 and welcoming their friends to Crewe in 2012.
 
Crewe Brass Musical Director, Jamie Meredith is looking forward to performing alongside the accordion band again, “It really is a unique and exciting sound when you bring together a full 25 piece brass band and an accordion orchestra”.

This happy-go-lucky little piece will make you want to dance! Written in G major, the introduction is eight bars long. It is quite hummable and memorable. It clips along at a jaunty pace through the first section, which requires some treble fingering dexterity. It changes to C major for the second section before returning to G major.
