This new idea competition was an exciting part of the 1st China Shenzhen Xixiang Music Valley International Accordion Competition.

Some 19 contestants started in Round 1. For each round, the contestant plays one peice and at the conclusion of the round, the judges decide who is able to proceed to the next round. The audience also had a vote to decide which two from those not selected by the jury would proceed to the next round.

As a reward for contestant passing through to the next round, the contestants can then choose between taking a cash prize and leaving the competition, or return the prize and proceed to the next round for an even bigger cash prize with the risk of the possible elimination.

This new concept met with enthusiasm from the contestants and audience alike, making an exciting and quick moving event.

Classic Kyiv Duo Concert, Huddersfield – UK

Classic Kyiv DuoThe Classic Kyiv Duo - accordionists Igor Sayenko and Oleksiy Kolomoiets – on their annual British tour from Kiev in the Ukraine, performed last week at New Mill Parish Church in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The concert also involved the Holmfirth Choral Society. Their performance was reviewed for The Huddersfield Daily Examiner by William Marshall:

“This unusual concert – English choral singing alongside two accordionists from Ukraine – attracted a large audience to New Mill Parish Church.

The Kyiv Classic Accordion Duo of Igor Sayenko and Oleksiy Kolomoiets are repeat visitors to the area. Their concert tours raise money for Ukrainian charities, notably survivors of the Chernobyl disaster, and this year’s trip to the UK takes place in the shadow of the military conflict that has now erupted in their homeland. This was alluded to before a performance of Albinoni’s solemn ‘Adagio’.

There is no doubting the exceptional virtuosity achieved by the duo on their chromatic button accordions. This was best reflected, perhaps, in their second set, which included some specific compositions and arrangements for the instrument, including folk-influenced material from Eastern Europe.

The duo’s first set established the classical credibility of the accordion. The two instruments were utterly organ-like in Widor’s ‘Toccata’, and in movements from Bach’s ‘Suite in B Minor’, the dynamic possibilities were fully explored.

The accordion being a reed instrument, we could hear clarinets and bassoons evoked by the duo and in a sequence from Tchaikovsky’s ‘Nutcracker’, the inner parts and the chord voicings came over with exceptional clarity.
