AAA 85th Anniversary In-Person Festival: July 12-16, 2023 - USAby Joan Grauman Morse, AAA Historian |
The American Accordionists' Association (AAA) celebrates its 85th Anniversary festival at the Marriott Philadelphia West in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA from July 12th to 16th, 2023. Organisers are very excited to announce that the delightful, dynamic and brilliant world renowned conductor, Joan C. Sommers, will be conducting this year’s Festival Orchestra! The AAA Festival committee is busy adding new events constantly, so please check the AAA website regularly. Registration forms will be online soon as well. Meanwhile, below are just a few of the exciting events we have planned. We are very pleased to announce that New Zealand born Grayson Masefield will be joining us for performances and workshops. Very personable and well-spoken, Grayson has won and been laureate at over a dozen international accordion competitions around the world in classical, virtuoso and digital categories. He is currently the instrumental music teacher for accordion at the University of Auckland, NZ. Another special guest performer will be accordion legend Joey Miskulin. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2018 for his extraordinary accomplishments with the piano accordion, Joey continues to delight listeners with his “flying fingers” and ability to engage audiences. Conducting our Youth Orchestra for this year’s festival will be Joanna Darrow. Joanna has dedicated her entire life to performing, teaching and promoting the accordion. She has performed several times with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and performed all over Europe, for over 30 years, with her accordion teacher/husband, the late Stanley Darrow. Joanna has accordion students of all ages and has conducted ensembles and orchestras for many years. At our festival’s Saturday banquet, the AAA will award its coveted Lifetime Achievement Award to long-time AAA Board member Frank Busso Sr. Frank has been an educator, performer, conductor and all-around ambassador of the accordion for decades. XV Dani Harmonica Festival - Bosnia and Herzegovinaby Christine Johnstone |
The XV "Dani Harmonica" Festival will be held in Ugljevik, Serb Republic, Bosnia and Herzegovina from April 27th to May 1st, 2023, organized by the elementary Music School "Kornelije Stankovic". The event will include concerts, seminars, professional lectures, and a competition for soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestras. The Akkordeon Orchester Koln Deutz e.V (pictured below), conducted by Olga Belyaeva will perform a concert with the Cologne Mandolin Orchestra "Harmonie" 1909 conducted by Sergei Kurdriaschow on March 12th, 2023 at 5pm. The event is part of the concert series "Accordion and Guests" and will be held at the auditorium of the Friedrich-Wilhelm Gymnasium in Cologne, Germany. Video: Aotango - Promo video for Auckland Museum concert Get ready to be dazzled as New Zealand’s celebrated quintet Aotango take you on an eclectic journey through the evolution of tango in a show featuring some of New Zealand’s top talent: Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) Concertmaster and violinist Andrew Beer, NZ Trio pianist Somi Kim at the Fazioli grand piano, world champion accordionist Grayson Masefield, APO Principal Bassist Gordon Hill and renowned jazz guitarist Sam Swindells. The concert will take place on March 12th, 2023 from 6.30pm in the Auckland Museum’s stunning setting of Te Ao Marama South Atrium in Parnell. Auckland, with Tuitui Museum Bistro & Café offering delicious food and beverage options throughout the evening. Presented in two acts, 'A Century of Tango' traces the origins and diverse expressions of this vibrant style. Through the course of the performance, hear how tango has evolved through African, European, South and Central American influences as they have entered through Rio de la Plata to the ports of Buenos Aires - with popular favourites "El Choclo", "Por una Cabeza" and "La Cumparsita" - and finally to the revolutionary nuevo tango style of Argentinian composer Ástor Piazzolla. West Country Concertina Players Workshop Weekend – England, UKby Christine Johnstone |
The West Country Concertina Players will host a Concertina Workshop Weekend at Halsway Manor National Centre for Folk Arts in Somerset, England, UK from March 17th to 19th, 2023. The weekend is for intermediate / advanced level players of all systems and is open to all. There will be time to relax in the comfort of Halsway Manor, with evening playing sessions in the bar, plus an informal tutor’s concert on the Saturday evening. 2023 Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships – Northern Irelandby Christine Johnstone |
The 2023 Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships were held at the Hilton Hotel Conference Centre, in Templepatrick, Co. Antrim on February 18th, 2023, organised by Clyde Johnston (picture left). The event featured a final concert which included an opening performance by the Royal Meath Accordion Orchestra (picture above). Members of this orchestra were awarded the top three prizes in the overall category for best performances: Michael Leavey, Laura Masterson and the RMAO Senior Ensemble. This popular competition had over 180 entries from “England, Scotland, Germany, the Republic of Ireland as well as a strong local contingent.” Competition classes were held for soloists, duos, groups, orchestras and marching bands for a variety of age groups. The Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) will hold a Professional Development Course “How to Practise” with Jelena Milojevic (picture right) on February 26th from 12 noon US Central time. In this workshop attendees will learn to structure their own practice, or guide their students to do the same, in order to always perform well. In an easy to follow, step by step way, you'll get tools to building good habits in your daily practice routine. Jelenia will cover the process from the moment of preparing to learn music, process of fingering, practice strategies, avoiding learning mistakes, addressing problems, and so much more! Jelena Milojevic is an accordion instructor at the University of Victoria in Canada. She has an extensive performing history as a soloist, chamber musician and soloist with various orchestras. 16th Premio Andrea Parodi Music Competition - Italyby Christine Johnstone |
Applications are now open for the 16th Premio Andrea Parodi European Music Competition for artists from all over the world. The competition was created in honour of the distinguished Sardinian artist Andrea Parodi, who passed away 17 years ago. The 2022 edition Premio Andrea Parodi received almost 300 entries, with about half from international countries. Competition prizes include concerts and performances in some of the partner music festivals in their 2024 editions, such as European Jazz Expo (Sardinia), Folkest (Friuli), as well as the 2024 Premio Andrea Parodi as well as a €2,500 scholarship. Winner of the Critics' Award will have a professional videoclip of their competition piece produced, offered by the Andrea Parodi Foundation. The finals will be held in autumn in Cagliari, Sardinia. Auckland accordionist Tracey Collins entertained as a member of the Bluelight Trio at the Katikati Twilight Festival in Katikati, New Zealand on February 11th, 2023. Tracey was joined by Pascale Roggen (violin) and John Murray (drummer/cajon player). A crowd of over 400 people enjoyed their mixed program of tunes from Mediterranean, Jazz, Gypsy, Contemporary which was well received. Urs Lötscher (picture left) will tutor an Accordion Workshop at the Haus der Volksmusik in Altdorf, Switzerland on February 26th, 2023. “During the course you will learn to accompany a simple yodel song with the accordion. The course group is dedicated to various topics: Basic knowledge of harmony and ear training. Musical expression, sound design, dynamics, development of understanding of text in yodel songs, interaction with small yodel formations (solo, duet, trio).” The workshop is aimed at young people & adults with a playing level at least intermediate, an interest in yodeling, knowledge of sheet music and simple musical basics. Accordionists will entertain at the “2023 Shamrock the Dock” festival held at 1 Dock St in Annapolis, Maryland, USA on March 4th and 5th, 2023. The two day music and cultural festival will feature international and local acts, including Scythian (USA – picture below with accordionist Dan Fedoryka) and Skerryvore (Scotland - picture left with Daniel Gillespie on accordion). The event will also celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a huge parade and a circus tent with music performances. |

National Accordion Convention (NAA) March 15-19 in Richardson, Texas - USAby Christine Johnstone |
The 2023 National Accordion Convention (NAA) will take place at the Hilton Hotel, Richardson, Texas from March 15th to 19th, 2023. This conventioneer-driven convention is getting close! Make reservations today (both hotel and convention). The schedule and related items are on the NAA website. As of February 17th, 2023 there are only 26 days until the National Accordion Association 2023 Convention! The convention is four days of action-packed events for accordionists and accordion enthusiasts that includes over 30 workshops, two evening concerts, and a Friday high-tempo experience with the popular Brave Combo Band and accordionist Alex Meixner. Two meals are included, including an elegant Saturday night banquet, and opportunities for private lessons by presenters will make the event even more special. An always-popular part of the Convention will be Fun Band directed by Dick Albreski. The music is now available on the NAA website. NAA President Norman Seaton (picture right) says "Our plan is that everyone who wishes to perform will be able to do so at some point during the four days. There will be numerous opportunities to play during meals, jam sessions, and Music in the Air." The Swap Shop will offer musical instruments, and accordion companies will be onsite displaying their instruments. One important aspect of every NAA Convention is the wonderful friendships forged during the event. One conventioneer stated that it’s not just the music that makes the experience so great; when one returns year after year, it becomes a reunion! The convention will feature 2023 versions of American Music that is marketable as today’s music. This music is a combination of contemporary American music originated by USA immigrants who brought their musical values and traditions as they joined the great American melting pot. Our music is a blend of musical styles that include, but are not limited to, popular tunes, folk music, country and western (C&W), ballads that tell a story, rock and roll, polkas and waltzes, European music, Gospel, and jazz.
