Richard Galliano Wonderful Class & Concert in Shanghai - Chinaby Jessica Shi Xuan |
Richard Galliano, one of the worlds foremost accordion masters, kicked off his sextet concert on 16th October at the very prestigious Shanghai Concert Hall. The concert was a great success with the audience showing its appreciation of the superb performance, with continuous ovations. Concert and masterclass pictures at: 2015Galliano Concert program: Antonio Vivaldi - The Four Seasons-Winter Antonio Vivaldi - The Four Seasons-Summer Richard Galliano - Waltz For Margaux Richard Galliano - Petkte Suite Francaise Bach - Double Concerto For Oboe and Violin Astor Piazzolla - Foue Seasons of Buenos Aires: Autumn Astor Piazzolla - Foue Seasons of Buenos Aires: Spring Richard Galliano - Habanerando Richard Galliano - Tango For Claude Of special note was the Richard Galliano arrangement of the Chinese folk song "Jasmine Flower" as his encore. This was a particularly beautiful arrangement with its own unique Richard Galliano interpretation. The audience couldn’t help humming the melodies and there was a great feeling of elegance and warmth - no one wanted to leave. The next afternoon, Richard Galliano participated in a public service activity "Appointment with the Master" masterclass, at the Shanghai Concert Hall. He worked with three accordion amateurs including participatory discussion for more than one hour. While many accordionist focus on technical guidance, Galliano prefers to gradually broaden a student’s horizon with their study. He said, "The most important thing to learn for accordion, is listening." To this end, Galliano then listed an array of tracks by other composers for the benefit of everyone. His teaching skill and cordial approach was most impressive. |

Foster & Allen Celebrate 40 Years, Mullingar – Republic of Irelandby Rob Howard |
Video above: Special song celebrating 40 years. Foster & Allen - accordionist Mick Foster and singer/guitarist Tony Allen - began performing together professionally in 1975, and in 1979 they released the single ‘A Bunch of Thyme’ in Ireland, which became their first top-selling No. 1 single in Ireland and the UK. Other hit singles and albums followed, and they have to date achieved album and DVD sales in excess of 22 million worldwide. Foster & Allen have done more than most to present the accordion to the general public worldwide. Mick Foster was taught to play the accordion by Sr Agnes Murray, a nun of the Mercy Order in Ballymahon, County Longford, and Frankie Gavigan. In 1968 and 1970 Mick Foster won an All Ireland Championship at the Fleadh Cheoil. He has often stated that his accordion would probably be the last thing in life he would be prepared to give up. To celebrate 40 years together the duo have this year toured South Africa and New Zealand, and are about to begin a UK tour. Tour dates are all on the poster. They have also released a new CD, appropriately titled ‘Celebration’. |

Jimmy Shand's Collection of Rare Music Books Conserved in Dundee - UKby Rob Howard |
Rare music books collected by the late Sir Jimmy Shand (1908-2000) are to be conserved for future generations of musicians. The collection, dating back to the 1700s, was bought at auction by the Friends of Dundee's Wighton Heritage Centre following Shand's death in 2000. Many of the books are in such poor condition that they are unusable, so a fundraising campaign has been launched to raise the thousands of pounds needed to restore them. Singer Sheena Wellington, a Friend of Wighton, said: "What we have are things that are rare, unusual and nowhere else. Once we have them conserved then they're available for scholars, for musicians, for use by the community and we're intending that as each one is done to have a concert, ceilidh and set of workshops. Jimmy didn't pick them up because they were going to look bonny on his shelves. He picked them up because what was in them mattered and that's what we think as well". |

Meet Washington, DC’s Own Joyce Palmer With A beautiful Story! - USAby Joan Grauman Morse |
Some of you may have seen a photo of this incredible gravestone on Facebook. “Who is this person and where is this located?”, “BEAUTIFUL, I want this!”, and “??? WOW!” are the comments under the photo. Meet Joyce Palmer: a warm, generous and very much still alive person who sees problems and addresses them head on – and she loves the accordion! Joyce plays the accordion and, in 2002, decided to bring a small group of accordionists of differing abilities together to form a little band. Joyce named the group “CHAOS”, which stands for “Capitol Hill Accordion Orchestra Society”. Living in Capitol Hill, Joyce was concerned about the future of the 200 year old Congressional Cemetery, where the celebrated composer and band leader John Philip Sousa is buried. “It is my view that CHAOS helped in part to save Congressional Cemetery from almost certain destruction and loss,” Joyce said proudly during our interview. “I was on the Board of Directors at the cemetery for years during which it did not look as if we would survive the destruction of 200 years of decline and misuse. This included one Cemetery manager who embezzled us back to about six dollars. Many people including our Board Chairman, Patrick Crowley, got together and worked very hard to find money to pave the roads, match a challenge from the Preservation Trust, find money to save the roof on the little chapel, etc., etc., etc. CHAOS played five times at the Cemetery for fundraising efforts and support to save this historical property. John Philip Sousa is buried at Congressional Cemetery, so it was a natural for us to bring music to the Cemetery. Every day I thank our little group for their efforts in “the bad old days”. Incidentally, Congressional Cemetery was saved and now there is an endowment with the National Trust to save this historical property in perpetuity.” “So, the beautiful stone accordion – what a touching tribute to our beloved instrument – what made you create this monument, years before your passing?” I asked. Joyce beamed. “I chose to have an accordion carved out of black granite as a gravestone monument on the main road of Congressional Cemetery because that was the location where our little band CHAOS had played so often to help this organization survive. Since I was on the Board of Directors and a member of the church that owns the Cemetery, the plot was sold to me. There is accommodation in this burial plot for up to ten people. I chose to open the site up to poor musicians. There is a passel of us! Three spots have been spoken for and each person has a place for their names, dates and thoughts. My thoughts read ‘Music is the Answer’. One of the others chose ‘Musician and Composer’. The rest will be revealed.” I have played with CHAOS occasionally at Joyce’s house parties. They are lovely people and really enjoying being together and playing music. Joyce says, “It is true that we are not really very good, so we may be asked to play a lot….but… we never get asked back.” I didn’t believe her, as they really do sound good! Joyce spoke of her wonderful house and yard. “I built a little stage in my backyard. CHAOS now plays on occasion for shut-ins and seniors. The area has been smoothed out for wheelchairs. Our little group seems to do well when the senior bus shows up at my house and we play the old favorites for our guests. It may be that we serve good sandwiches, but who cares. We get to play together and enjoy each other’s company. Thank goodness for the good people of CHAOS.” Thank goodness for you, Joyce Palmer! ‘14 Years Ago’: Tribute to Accordion Makers in Argentina, October 2001by Rob Howard |
The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending October 19th 2001 included a tribute to the Anconetani family, originally from Italy, who began manufacturing accordions in Argentina in 1896, and went on to help found the Asociación Internacional de Acordeonistas - AIDA (Argentina Accordion Association). Several leading South American accordionists, including Chango Spasiuk, use Anconetani instruments. In 2007 the Anconetani Accordion Museum opened in Buenos Aires, showcasing the family’s instruments through the years. Special Guests Attend Tribute - Argentina Contributed by Angel Russo The tribute to the Anconetani family, organized by the Secretariat of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires and held in Capital Federal on October 7th was a great success. Giovanni Anconetani travelled from Italy to Argentina in 1892 and began the first Argentinean accordion manufacturing business 105 years ago in 1896. His four children continued the business, which is now run by the two survivors Josefina (86) and Nazareno (82) who both attended the celebrations. The event included a march of over 40 top accordionists such as Julio Erman, Luis Santisi, Caruso, Julio Solari, Angel Russo and many more who accompanied Nazareno Anconetani. The Anconetani family, together with other accordionists, founded the Asociación Internacional de Acordeonistas - AIDA (Argentina Accordion Association). |
