Iosif Purits and Petar Maric Win at Castelfidardo - Italy

Iosif Purits and Petar MaricDaily Reports of the “Faces and Facts” and results are available online at 2009 Concorso.

The top competition categories of the 34th Festival Internazionale Fisarmonica Castelfidardo were won by Iosif Purits (Russia) who won the Premio category and Petar Maric (Serbia) who won Category D (classical) and Category H (entertainment). Entries were up this year and a number of countries had prize winners.

Cagnoni Reeds presented their annual award Golden Voice ‘Voce d'Oro’ to Renzo Ruggieri. This award is given to those who have given prominence to the accordion in the world of modern music through performance, composition, organization of events, promotion and television or newspaper coverage.

The "Ballone Burini award for the school/teacher who had the most participants to place in the top three of categories ABCD and Premio was won by Cao Xiao-Qing (China).

Efrem Podgaits’ 60th Birthday, Moscow - Russia

Efrem PodgaitsOn October 16th, in Moscow, during a 60th birthday concert for Efrem Podgaits, Friedrich Lips performed the composer’s ‘Ex Animo’ for bayan and string quartet (dedicated to Friedrich Lips and the Fine Arts-Quartet), whose first performance took place in Milwaukee, USA, in 2003.

Efrem Podgaits is an outstanding Russian composer who has published many works for bayan such as ‘Fantasy in Memoriam of Alfred Schnittke’ and ‘Sonata” for bayan solo’, ‘Lips Concert’, and two other concerts for bayan and symphony orchestra.

Podgaits’ most recent concert work ‘Viva Voce’ has been selected to be performed in the 3rd round of next year’s Bayan and Accordion Competition’ in Moscow.

Yang Yi Bai played in Tiananmen Square, Beijing - China

Yang Yi BaiThe National Day Tiananmen Square 60th anniversary celebration of the founding of China included large-scale fireworks, an evening party, famous young singer Zuhai together with hundreds of young pioneers singing plus the well-known accordionist Yang Yi Bai.

This important event was captured on China Central Television (CCTV), the highlight of Yang’s performance being the passionate performance of ‘Let's Dangqi sculls’, accompanied by joyful singing and dancing echoing across Tiananmen Square.

This was an exciting moment for all accordionists and an important signal of the overall popularity of the accordion in the general population and in the mainstream music industry.

The Las Vegas International Accordion Convention – USA

Las Vegas posterThe Ten Year Celebration for the The Las Vegas International Accordion Convention has started and is running from October 19th-23rd at the Gold Coast Hotel.

Organiser Paul Pasquali has put together a star studded event including such names as Dick Contino, Art Van Damme, Peter & Mady Soave, Stas Venglevski, Mary Tokarski, Mario Tacca & Mary Mancini, Gina Brannelli and many more wonderful performers.

Joan Sommers will be conducting the Last Vegas International Accordion Orchestra and there are workshops as well.

With great hotel prices and some many attractions, the 10th Anniversary events looks sure to be a great success.

‘Double Jeu’ Duo, Reims – France

Double JeuThe duo ‘Double Jeu’ (‘Double Jeopardy’) was formed following a meeting between accordionists Pierre Laval, aged 20, originally from Betheny, near Reims, and Felician Brut, 22, a native of Saint Sauves Auvergne in the Puy de Dome.

Pierre achieved third place in both the CMA Tropheé Mondiale and the Junior Virtuoso Entertainment Category of the CIA Coupe Mondiale in 2007. In the same year Felician won in succession the international competitions at Kilngenthal (Germany), Castelfidardo (Italy), and the CMA Tropheé Mondiale. It was then that they decided to perform together as a duo.

Pierre currently teaches the accordion in the region of Rheims, and Felician also fronts a trio.

‘Double Jeu’ will be performing in Moscow, Russia, from November 4th to 8th.

Accordion Tribe Preparing for European Tour

Guy KlucevsekThe international accordion ensemble Accordion Tribe will make another tour of Europe early in 2010, and their first two dates have been confirmed, with many more to be announced. The line up is likely to be Guy Klucevsek (picture right - USA), Maria Kalaniemi (Finland), Bratko Bibic (Slovenia), and Otto Lechner (Austria). They will be without Lars Hollmer (Sweden), who died earlier this year.

Formed in 1996, Accordion Tribe is an ensemble that seeks to explore the use of the accordion in different cultures and musical contexts. In addition to concert tours and recordings, the ensemble released ‘Accordion Tribe - Music Travels’, a German-language documentary film about the band. It premiered in January 2004, and in 2005 won the Swiss Film Prize for the Best Documentary, as well as the documentary film prize at the Würzburg International Filmweekend. The film features the life of the band on the road and in concert, as well as exploring each individual member in their homelands.

Vladimir Skiba on TV show "Minute of Fame" - Russia

Vladimir SkibaWell-known accordionist from Rostov-on-Don, Vladimir Skiba in late September took part in the TV show "Minute of Fame", which is held at Russia's central television. He played an antique "Osmanski" accordion pictured. He went into the second round of the TV show, which is seen in many countries that were part of the USSR.

Stas Venglevski and John SimkusFrom November 14th to 22nd Stas Venglevski and John Simkus will be touring Austria for the third time. Concerts will take place in 5 different regions including cities such as Vienna, Neunkirchen, St. Stefan, Lienz, Rottenmann, Graz and Perg. Their programme will include not only works by J.S.Bach, I.Albeniz, E.Derbenko, V.Gridin and S.Venglevski himself, but also arrangements of Russian folk themes, French musette, and a medley of ‘favorite melodies’.

Baillies Mills Accordion Band Concert, Belfast – UK

Baillies Mills Accordion BandOn Tuesday November 10th, 7.45pm, the Baillies Mills Accordion Band perform in concert at The Waterfront, 2 Lanyon Place, Belfast BT1 3WH, Northern Ireland, to celebrate their 70th anniversary. Three charities benefit from this concert: Stepping Stones, Camphill Communities Trust (NI) and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

The Baillies Mills Accordion Band will be joined by an array of local talent: the Methodist College Girls Choir (twice winners of the UK`s Sainsbury Choir of the Year competition), The Friendship Band (an ensemble of some of the best local brass musicians, playing in carnival style), and Sheelagh Greer, one of Ulster`s finest mezzo sopranos.

Also performing will be local flautist Jonathan Johnston, The Gillian Jones Dancers, and The Leading Ladies, who have emerged from musical theatre companies across Ireland.

BBC Radio 2's Young Folk Award 2010, London – UK

BBC Radio 2 logoThe BBC Radio 2's Young Folk Award 2010 takes place on Friday December 4th in London. The 6 finalists include accordionist Chris Keatinge, and the band Cinnte, from Northern Ireland, featuring Ciaran Hanna - on concertina.

Chris Keatinge has been playing the button accordion for 15 years now, under the tutelage of Ian Lowthian. In 2005 Chris won the Rotarty Club's ‘Young Musican of the Year’ and was a 2006 finalist in the BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Young Traditional Musician of the Year’. Since then he has performed across Scotland with the TMSA ‘Young Trad Tour’ as part of Harris Playfair's ‘Coel Mor’ at the Aberdeen International Festival, and most recently as part of the Border Tunesmiths, a collaborative project and concert of 9 Borders musicians.

Cinnte are a group of friends (and brothers) who have played Irish traditional music together for a few years at fleadhs (competitions) and festivals. They decided to form a band in 2008 to launch a local cultural festival, and since then have appeared on Irish national television and are preparing to record their first album.

Yuri Shishkin Performs in Khanty-Mansiysk - Russia

Yuri ShiskinYuri Shishkin performs in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on the 25th October at the hall of Concert-theatrical center "Ugra-classic". There will be a most unusual competition. Yuri Shiskin will make a concert-competition with organist Vladislav Murtazin of Kazan. They will perform works of Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rodrigo, Semionov. The public will then choose who is the winner - the organist or Shishkin?

On 27th October in the same hall will be a solo recital by Yuri Shishkin. The program includes: Rachmaninov, Mussorgsky, Khandochkin, Kusiakov and Semionov.
