Artemis VavatsikaDuring 2018 the “Women Composing in the Balkans Festival” was held for the first time from September 27th to 29th for women composers from Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, with the aim to include more Balkan countries in the future. The aim of the project is to encourage young female composers to introduce their work abroad, rehearse with new musicians and develop a network among the young generation of composers in the Balkan area.

The idea was developed by the Cultural Management Academy 2017 Bucharest, Sofia, Thessaloniki and funded by the Goethe Institut. The selection of pieces has been in collaboration with La.Re.Co.M-DMSA of the University of Macedonia and the non-profit organization "Beartive".

Classical participants “Mehexis Ensemble” (which features accordionist Artemis Vavatsika - picture right) are candidates for the Innovation Award 2019. The ensemble is one of only 10 finalists from 37 participants from 26 countries around Europe, Asia and America.

The results will be announced at the Classical NEXT award ceremony in Rotterdam, Holland from May 15th to 18th. The vote will be open to the public of Classical NEXT from March 5th to 29th.
