Coupe Mondiale 2009 Rules Online – New Zealand

2009 Coupe Mondiale New Zealand posterNewly released on the Coupe Mondiale website is the Guidelines, Modus Operandi and General Competition Conditions for the 2009 Coupe Mondiale being held in Auckland, New Zealand, 25th to 29th August 2009.

Also newly released is the rules and music criteria for each competition category. Teachers of international competition candidates are advised to study the website carefully as some rules are changed for 2009.

Additionally on the Coupe Mondiale site is all the hotel information and information about the competition venue in New Zealand. There is also a 2009 CM Festival Registration page for supporters, for all concerts and social functions with a special discounted price for those who purchase before 30 April 2009.

The site is now showing the colors of the 2009 Coupe Mondiale poster with the homepage montage showing various winners of the 2008 Coupe Mondiale categories.

Teodoro Anzellotti Film and Concert, California – USA

Teodoro AnzellottiOn December 7th, 11am, the film ‘The Art of Seduction: Teodoro Anzellotti's Accordion’ will be screened at the Goethe-Institut, 5750 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036.

Directed by Uli Aumüller in 1999, the film lasts 45 minutes, and is in German with English subtitles. The film is an in-depth look at accordionist Teodoro Anzellotti.

The documentary features performances and interviews with composers Luciano Berio, Salvatore Sciarrino and Vinko Globokar. Following the film will be a discussion with Anzellotti and musicologist Luciano Chessa, and a live performance of new works by Brice Pauset and Toshio Hosokawa.

The Goethe-Institut will open at 10.30 am for refreshments, and the program begins promptly at 11am.

On Monday, December 8th, 8pm, Teodoro Anzellotti performs in concert with other musicians in a West Coast premiere of ‘Avant-Garde Through the Ages’, composed by Michael Maierhof, at the Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School, 200 S. Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Chinese Sights and Sounds, Beijing - China

The concert, organised by Professor Cao Xiao-Qing, tutor at the Conservatory of Music, Beijing, featured 24 pieces based around Chinese folk tunes that were written by Bao Yuankai, a famous professor, composer and music educator.

National Composers’ Competition, Stoke – UK

National Accordion Organisation of the UK (NAO), UK Championships, Blackpool, April 24th to 26th 2009.Organised bi-annually by the North Staffs Accordion Club since 2000, the National Accordion Music Composers’ Competition is an innovative idea meant to encourage the writing of new compositions for the accordion. The NSAC has subsequently released many of the entries in book form and on CD, played by the composers or other accordionists.

From now on, the competition will be run on an annual basis, and organised by the National Accordion Organisation of the UK (NAO), and held at the UK Championships in Blackpool, April 24th to 26th 2009.

The Composers’ Competition will follow closely those of previous years but with a few differences. Solo and duets will be separated into different sections. Competitors may enter two compositions in any applicable section (Professional, Amateur, Junior, Duet and Band/Group).

Internationale Musik Messe My Music Friedrichshafen - Germany

Julien ‘Speedy’ Gonzales was one of the accordionists featured at the Internaional Musik – Expo My Music in Fredrichshafen, Bodensee on the 14th to 16th November at the Hohner booth. Hohner had a large display stand (all instruments) and a music café at which “Speedy” was demonstrating Genius and Fun Flash instruments.

Accordionists were also featured at other times during the Messe. The Akkordeonorchester Bezirksorchester Bodensee performed, Grünschnäbel & Alexander Chargnelli were presented by the Musikschule Trossingen, and “Speedy” also performed with Matthias Matzke, presented by the Hohnerkonservatorium Trossingen.

‘Accordions International 2008’, Hemsby - UK

The Lars Ek Hot Trio (Sweden)‘Accordions International 2008’, held for the first time at Seacroft Holiday Village, Hemsby, Norfolk, was a great success, despite the late withdrawal of guest artiste Pino Di Modugno (Italy).

The Lars Ek Hot Trio, from Sweden, returned to England after a long absence and made a big impression with their lively and engaging performances of music by Frosini, Pietro and Guido Deiro, Scandinavian traditional music, swing and hot jazz. Lars Ek also led a workshop on the music of Frosini.

There were impressive performances from other guests, including Giancarlo Caporilli (Italy), Stefan Andrusyschyn & Denise Leigh (operatic soprano), Harry Hussey, Bert Santilly, and local accordion sextet Norvic Concordia (MD Peter Ayers). The festival orchestral workshops were ably led by Brian Jenkins, Peter Whiteley, Heather Smith, Adrienne Sharpe, Jean Hanger, Bert Santilly, and John Trigg.

‘Accordions International 2008’ continues a tradition of autumn accordion festivals in East Anglia founded by the late Malcolm Gee in 1986, previously held at nearby Caister and Pakefield. The present organiser is Heather Smith. Next year’s festival takes place from November 13th to 16th 2009.

Yuri Medianik Scholarship and Concerts - Russia

Yuri MedianikAs part of the New Names International Music, renowned Russian musician, violinist and bayanist Yuri Medianik has introduced a scholarship of his own. The scholarship is intended to reward a talented musician who will be selected after the auditions of all the three competition tours.

Medianik is president of Pluri_Art Center of Classical and Folk Music that organizes concerts and master classes. Aside from the cash scholarship, the young musician will obtain artistic support from Pluri_Art center. The winner of the scholarship will announced during the competition closing ceremony on November 30 on the stage of the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

Yuri Medianik’s career continues to successfully benefit from this artist’s bi-instrumental talent.

His October schedule was extremely busy:

Dominic Karcic Entertains, New York – USA

On Saturday November 22nd, 6pm, accordionist Dominic Karcic entertains for a Regione Emilia-Romagna Dinner-Dance at Maestro's Caterers, 1703 Bronxdale Ave, Bronx, NY.

Dominic Karcic attended New York College of Music and the City University of New York (CCNY), where he received his Masters Degree in Music. He plays professionally in the New York metropolitan area, and has a particular love for the Valtaro Musette style, gained through his years of study with Peter Spagnoli.

In recent years he has been involved in the preservation and documentation of this musical style. He collaborated in writing a biographical article on the life and career of accordionist John “Scudlein” Brugnoli (founder of the Valtaro Musette Orchestra) and has continued writing articles about Valtaro Musette music.

In June 2003, Dominic joined the Board of Governors of the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) and writes a column (“Heard It On The Gig”) for the AAA Newsletter.

Dawood Sarkhosh Concerts – Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark

Dawood Sarkhosh (born 1971) originates from Afghanistan, and is a versatile artiste who plays accordion and dumbara, sings and writes poetry. He studied the accordion under the Pakistani composer the late Arbab Ali Khan.

Sarkhosh’s work is inspired by a sense of nationalism and suffering in exile, and Afghan refugees throughout the world support his concerts in large numbers.

Gorka HermosaGorka Hermosa, from the Basque region of northern Spain, is a leading accordionist whose music includes classical, folk and jazz styles. After winning several competitions and performing a largely classical repertoire, Gorka Hermosa has diversified into other styles.
