"Philharmonika 2018", Accordion Stars & String Orchestra at Philharmonie Berlin Chamber Music Hall - Germanyby Accordions Worldwide |
Above: Demo Video 2018 by "Philharmonika 2018" Translation from the Deutsche Harmonikaverband e.V. (DHV) Germany website: A festival as a declaration of love to the accordion On May 26, 2018, at 6 pm, this year's Philharmonika Concert will take place in the chamber music hall of the Philharmonie Berlin. But this year's concert will not stop there, a masterclass with accordion star Grayson Masefield, and a variety of smaller concerts in varying instrumentation will be combined to form a full accordion music festival. Sometimes delicate and tender, sometimes powerful, sometimes lively, sometimes almost overconfident, always passionate, from the classical to the avant-garde - the Philharmonika Festival presents the accordion in all its tonal and stylistic range. In interaction with the string orchestra, the young instrument establishes itself in the philharmonic context. The highlight of the festival will be the Philharmonika Concert in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic on May 26, 2018. It is the fifth major accordion event of the Pantonale e.V. - and a declaration of love for the instrument. Virtuoso's from New Zealand, Russia, Germany, Slovakia and Poland interpret in their very own way, works from three centuries and contemporary original compositions for accordion and string orchestra. The five-time accordion world champion Grayson Masefield from New Zealand, the German forerunner of the digital accordion and multiple award winner Matthias Matzke (who however chose the classical instrument for the concert), the brilliant, young Russian virtuoso Anna Kryshtaleva and her teacher Yuri Shishkin, who inspires an international audience with his musical-pictorial interpretations. With the duo 'Accosphere', Alena Budzinakova and Grzegorz Palus and the duo 'con: trust', Daniel Roth and Marius Staible, two young, internationally successful accordion duos will present their skills to the audience on the chamber music hall stage. The string orchestra will be conducted by the Ukrainian conductor, composer and accordion virtuoso Vladimir Zubitsky. Before and after the Philharmonika concert in the chamber music hall, there will be other concerts at Berlin venues being: May 24, 2018 at the Joseph Schmidt Music School Treptow-Köpenick, and on May 27 at the Pyramid Exhibition Center in Berlin Hellersdorf. Also in other music schools of the Berlin districts as well as at international schools of the city smaller concerts are given as part of the festival. As a special highlight for accordionists and students, the Pantonale e.V. offers a masterclass with Grayson Masefield on May 27th. Five to seven active participants can experience the star virtuosos up close, work with and be inspired. The interested public can participate as passive viewers of the master class and learn more about the instrument accordion and Grayson Masefield's experiences in making music, learning and teaching. The master class alone is certainly worth a trip to Berlin. London Accordion Orchestra at the Royal Academy of Music, Londonby Kevin Friedrich |
The London Accordion Orchestra (LAO) under the direction of Ian Watson performed to a near capacity audience at the renowned Duke's Hall at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London, showcasing five World Premieres and two additional original works for accordion orchestra. Professor Philip Cashian, Head of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music worked with Ian and the LAO to develop a project-based collaboration allowing four Graduate and one under-Graduate RAM composition students to write for the orchestra. The new works included 'Lost Tango' by Austin Leung, 'Lullaby' by Louise Drewett, 'Screaming Clowns' by Roy Watkins, 'At the still point of the turning World' by Robert Laidlow and 'The Day does not Pass' by Marco Galvani. Each of the young composers talked of their inspiration and ideas for their works, with the compositions by Leung, Drewett and Watkins, in addition to their individual styles, exploring the underlying theme of the possibility to express the strength and intensity of the instrument's upper dynamic range afforded by the 40 plus piece accordion orchestra. To the contrary Robert Laidlow's work showcased the orchestra's quietest dynamic range intertwined with silence, while Galvani's composition utilized the unique wave like rhythmical energy able to be produced with the bellows. In keeping with one of the orchestra's goals of promoting new works for the accordion, The London Accordion Orchestra also performed Stuart Hancock's 'Rhapsody' a work included on their 2017 Abbey Road CD recording and a magnificent new work by Ian Watson called 'Peace', inspired by his visit to the D-day Beaches in Normandy while on a concert tour in France. The LAO's next concert will be at the Philharmonic Hall in Ljubljana, Slovenia on May 6, 2018. For more information on the LAO, their recordings and upcoming concerts, please visit their website at: LAO |

Renzo Ruggieri Releases La Vita Delle Cose for Symphonic Orchestra and String Orchestra - Italyby Harley Jones |
Renzo Ruggieri released La Vita Delle Cose (The Life of Things) for accordion and symphonic orchestra in November last year. The work is "not classic, not jazz and not world... it's crossover music" according to Renzo Ruggieri. Video above. Because it is sometimes very difficult to have a full symphonic orchestra, Renzo Ruggieri has now made available, the parts for a string orchestra, so the player, without changing his accordion part, can perform with a string orchestra (smaller ensemble) or symphonic orchestra. Catalog rrenzo514 - La Vita Delle Cose sheet music is available in eSheet pdf format, previously 82 pages - now 150 pages, able to be emailed to you. Full score and single parts for: accordion solo (for free bass but adaptable for standard bass), 2 flute, 2 oboe, 2 clarinet, 2 french horn, 2 Cornet, 2 trumpet, 1 trombone, 2 percussion, Ist Violin, 2nd Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass. Renzo Ruggieri writes: "The composition has been dedicated to Marco Gemelli who was soloist in world premiere of International Accordion Week, Conservatory Nocera Terinese, 24 April 2017 with the Calabria Philharmonic Orchestra." "La Vita Delle Cose (The Life of Things): Things do not have life. But things tell of life by their existence and through this they acquire it. Five moments built with solutions that combine the composer's jazz, world and classical experiences and which need the sonority of the solo accordion also called upon to improvise. The flow of life is symbolised by a march increasingly rich in melodic-rhythmic events (things), up to the final climax." Available online, view sample pages, Catalog rrenzo514, purchase with credit card, amazing value, only Euro 50 or USD$ equivalent. |

Joey Miskulin Article Erratum, Nashville – USAby Rob Howard |
In the Accordions Worldwide news on March 9th it was incorrectly stated that US accordionist Joey Miskulin (picture right) would be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. This year’s three inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2018, to be inducted later this year are: Dottie West, Johnny Gimble, and Ricky Scaggs. Joey Miskulin, member of the band Riders in the Sky and a prolific session musician, was in fact honored on April 14th by the ‘Nashville Cats’ in the Ford Theater of the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. The ‘Nashville Cats’ is a collective group of session musicians, and Joey Miskulin was interviewed about his career before performing. Sincere apologies to our readers and to Joey Miskulin for this confusion. To date the only accordionist to have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville is Pee Wee King (1914-2000), whose induction took place in 1974. |

Ronald Chesney (1920-2018), Surrey – UKby Rob Howard |
Ronald Chesney, once Britain’s leading British chromatic harmonica soloist, was born Rene Cadier to French parents in 1920 in the UK. After a high profile musical carer he gave up playing in the early 1960s to become a very successful comedy script writer for radio, TV and films. Chesney’s first public performance was at the age of 17, and following a cinema variety tour, he made his first radio broadcast in 1937 on the BBC's ‘Palace of Varieties’ programme. With the outbreak of war he was asked by the BBC to give harmonica lessons to the troops over the radio. The programme ran for 42 weeks and he had over 10,000 letters from around the world. At the end of the war he developed a classical repertoire that included pieces by Debussy, Chopin, Heifetz and DeFalla, and toured the concert halls, including a two hour recital at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was very well received and was followed over the next few years by appearances at the London Palladium and the Paris Lido, concert tours with Gracie Fields, and overseas visits to South Africa and Australia. Ronald played with Duke Ellington, The Suisse Romande Orchestra, and George Melachrino and his Orchestra, amongst others. He also made recordings for REX, HMV and EMI. Chesney became President of the National Harmonica League League in 1951, and in the 1950s had a regular musical spot on the Archie Andrews BBC radio show. This was a great period for lovers of the harmonica, with both Larry Adler and Tommy Reilly also enjoying much success. In the early 1960s Chesney decided on a career change, and became comedy script writer, and with his partner Ronald Wolfe, became one of the most successful comedy writing teams with TV series ‘On the Buses’, Meet the Wife’, ‘The Rag Trade’, and ‘Romany Jones’, which led to follow-ups on films and in versions for many other countries. Ronald's show stopper in his stage performances, and probably his most famous recording, was ‘The Flight of the Bumble Bee’ by Rimskij-Korsakov. Because of the speed at which he played it - and the difficulty of the piece - he developed a variation to please the musical audience and make it last longer. Although he gave up the harmonica professionally in the 1960s, he continued to play jazz on the piano as recreation. Ronald Chesney, a much loved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 12th at the age of 98. |
