Over 1,500 Accordionists From Tacheng Aim For Guinness Record - China

Tacheng Accordion Festival
There are probably more accordionists per head of population in Tacheng than any other city in the world. Tacheng is in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of China, and to reach Tacheng, takes over 5 hours flying time from Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing and is close to the border of Kazakhstan. To put this in perspective, London to Moscow is 3 hours 40 minutes.

The China Daily Times (English edition) wrote: "Dubbed as the "city of accordion", Tacheng has a rich history and legacy of accordion. The accordion is akin to a symbol of the city, and out of every 10 people there will be two or three who can play the accordion.

Shan Xiaomei, chief of publicity department of Tacheng city, said that the accordion art festival this time is in a large scale with a high level, as the number of performers is likely to pass 1,600, gathering people from all walks of life from 17 ethnic groups."

Below is a picture of a small part of the huge orchestra rehearsing before the record breaking attempt performance on Saturday evening.

New Joe Cerrito Composition Theme & Scherzo Available - USA

Click to play sound file:
Joe CerritoTheme & ScherzoNoted jazz artist and exponent Joe Cerrito has released a new composition
Catalog: cerrito101 Theme & Scherzo.
You can hear Joe Cerrito performing this work - click the sound file above.

Joe Cerrito writes: "Joan Grauman told me many times, "You should write a piece for the accordion that reflects your style of playing." With that in mind, I came up with a simple melody (theme) using a major 7 to 6. Experimenting with different variations of major 7 to 6, I wanted to inject some fun and excitement, thus the scherzo. My intention was to make this piece a bit different from the standard accordion solo.

I sincerely hope that all who play Theme and Scherzo and listeners also, will enjoy a little bit of jazz in this piece. I dedicate this work to Dan and Joan Grauman."

Leonard Brown ‘Celebrating the Musical Career of Tom Alexander’ Concert, Scotland – UK

posterAccordionist Leonard Brown and his band perform a concert on Sunday August 28th, 2pm until 5pm, to celebrate the career of Tom Alexander MBE, who retired earlier this year. Tom Alexander will be the Guest of Honour at this concert, held at The Salutation Hotel, Perth. Tom Alexander rose to fame in the 1950s with his late brother Jack, a vocalist and pianist, as The Alexander Brothers, and their worldwide fame through concerts, tours, recordings and DVDs brought them great success wherever they appeared. In 1964 their single ‘Nobody’s Child’, outsold the Beatles in Scotland. Tom, an All Scotland Champion in the 1950s, was one of the finest accordionists of his era, and made many appearances and recordings as a solo artist.

Leonard Brown, from Newcastle, became only the second Englishman to become All Scotland Accordion Champion in 2012 (Robert Whitehead was the first in 1978). He has emerged as one the best young accordionists on the Accordion & Fiddle Club scene. Maggie Adamson is similarly renowned as an outstanding young fiddle player.
