 Akkordeonist Matthew Dubas, von der Band Svitanok (a.k.a. Liquid Gypsies), spielt eine kleine Nebenrolle in dem Film "Higher Ground", als Akkordeon Verkäufer, der er versucht eine Achtjährige davon zu überzeugen, dass das Akkordeon ihr Instrument ist.Darsteller Vera Farmiga, Donna Murphy und John Hawkes, "Higher Ground" wird von einem Kritiker als eine schöne und rührende Geschichte beschrieben, die auf persönlichen Memoiren einer Frau beruhen, die, nachdem sie umgeben von der christlichen Kirche aufgewachsen ist, beginnt, sich Fragen zu stellen über das, was ihr bisher gelehrt wurde. "Higher Ground ', ist eine unabhängige Produktion unter der Regie von Vera Farmiga und veröffentlicht von Sony Pictures Classics, mit Erstaufführung fam 26. August in New York, danach inLos Angeles, mit folgenden bundesweiten Termine. Matthew erinnert sich: "Es war eine tolle Erfahrung. Das im Film verwendete Akkordeon war ein Titano Grand-pearl white. Es war eine Herausforderung, auf der kleinere Tastatur zu spielen – vor allem bei der ersten Szene der Dreharbeiten. |

 Das beliebte finnischen Tango Unterhaltungs Orchester Guardia Nueva spielte im Juli auf dem Seinäjoki Tango Festival. Dieses riesige Tango Festival mit einem Publikum von über 100.000 Zuschauernhat sich zu einem prächtigen Event entwickelt.Guardia Nueva Leiter Raimo Vertainen (Bild rechts) war höchst erfreu für diese riesige Menschenmengevor allem aber für Finnlands Präsidentin Tanja Halonen auftreten zu dürfen. Ehrengast für das Konzert war der Komponist und Sänger Horacio Ferrer (Bild unten). Guardia Nueva spielte eine neue finnische Bearbeitung des Piazzolla / Ferrer Werkes „Balada para El“. Das Programm beinhaltete auch finnische und techno Tangos . Das Guardia Nueva 10. Jahrestags Konzert gibt es in der Kokkola Eishalle und wird im finnischen TV2 am 17. und 24. | Die neue CD "Non c'è Tempo" (Keine Zeit) ist eine neue Konstruktion der beidenbekannten Musiker mit dem sie eine Vielfalt an Ideen auf einzigartige und originelle Art mit persönlicher Individualität und unterschiedliche musikalischen Stilen an ethnischer Musik, Tango und Jazz vorstellen.  Wenn die Tiere einen Karneval veranstalten, erwacht der Bolongaropalast in Frankfurt Höchst zum Leben! Menage frei - denn das wünscht sich Groß und Klein: einmal sich zu unterscheiden und sich witzig zu verkleiden, einmal jemand anders zu sein. Ob das geht? Klarer Fall, alles geht im Karneval.Schauspieler Michael Quast (www.barock-am-main.com) führt amüsant durch die Menagerie der Tiere. Dieses wunderbare Werk von Saint-Saens wurde vom musikalischen Leiter Rhodri Britton in Kammermusikbesetzung für 7 Instrumente arrangiert. Am Akkordeon ist Mirjana Petercol.  Following a recent concert appearance at the Ikaalinen Festival, Finland, Serbian accordionist Petar Maric next traveled to perform a concert tour in Portugal. The dates there included:August 4th - Lourigna August 5th - Praia da Areia Branca August 6th - Sao Pedro do Sul August 7th - Souto da Carpalhosa August 8th - Santa Cruz. The current CIA Coupe Mondiale double champion (classical and virtuoso), Petar Maric impressed his audiences and he will return to Portugal again in October (13th to 17th). Petar is currently preparing for concerts in Spoleto, Italy, to be followed by a performance in Santorini, Greece, and as the winner of the last year’s competition he will perform in a concert of previous Coupe Mondiale winners at the 2011 Coupe Mondiale in Shanghai. | Die Besonderheit dieses "Instrumentalensembles" liegt im Sound: originell, modern und einzigartig. YavaBand Akkordeon-Duo – das sind zwei Akkordeonisten aus St. Petersburg: YanaFedoruk/ Яна Федорук und Vladimir Popolzin/ Владимир Поползин. Die Musiker haben Preise bei renommierten internationalen Wettbewerben gewonnen. Seit 2009 spielen sie zusammen im Duo. 2010 brachten die Musiker Yana Fedoruk und Vladimir Popolzin ihr Debütalbum „YavaBand – Beyond the Ocean“ heraus mit Kompositionen und Arrangements von Vladimir Popolzin für Solo und Duo. 2009 und 2010 machten sie Konzerttourneen in Deutschland. Das Akkordeon-Duo YavaBand gewann den ersten Preis beim Festival Internazionale Castelfidardo, Italien, im Oktober 2010. Das Markenzeichen des Duos sind Spezial-Arrangements von Titeln aus den Bereichen Jazz, Swing, Folk, Pop, Rock, Tango, Musette – eine neue improvisatorische Lesart bekannter Hits. „Klassische“ Beispiele sind "Waltz for Nicky" von RichardGalliano, oder „Vuelvo al sur“ von Astor Piazzolla. Aber auch folkloristische Themen werden mit Jazz-Elementen verknüpft, zum Beispiel in „Volare“ oder „Lang ist der Weg“ – in Deutschland besser bekannt unter dem Titel „Those Were The Days“. Im Repertoire sind außerdem eigens für Akkordeon-Duo komponierte Werke von Vladimir Popolzin wie das rasante "Côte d’Azur" oder das verträumte „Winter Night“, der Swing „Al and Bobby“ oder das klassisch anmutende „Präludium und Allegro“. Vladimir Popolzin ist Künstler, Komponist, Lehrer, Akkordeonist und Glasharfenspieler. Er wurde in Barnaul, Sibirien, geboren und begann mit sieben Jahren seine musikalische Ausbildung auf dem Piano-Akkordeon. Danach lernte er Knopf-Akkordeon und studierte Bajan und Dirigieren am Konservatorium in Novosibirsk. Anschließend arbeitete er als Lehrer, als Musiker und Dirigent im Sibirischen Nationalorchester und als Solist im Nationalen Philharmonischen Orchester von Barnaul. Seit 1994 machte er regelmäßig Konzerttourneen in Deutschland und hat mehr als 500 Konzerte als Solist und in diversen Formationen absolviert. Als Komponist schreibt für Akkordeon-Solo und –Duo, aber auch für Sinfonieorchester. Sowohl 2000 als auch 2010 gewann er mit seinem Akkordeon-Duo den ersten Preis beim Festival Internazionale Castelfidardo, Italien, in der Jazz-Kategorie. Yana Fedoruk ist seine Schülerin. Sie wurde in Kaliningrad, früher Königsberg, in einer musikalischen Familie geboren. Auch sie zeigte schon mit sieben Jahren ihre besonderen musikalischen Fähigkeiten in der Musikschule. Nach der Ausbildung im Bereich nationaler Volksinstrumente in Kaliningrad, schloss sie ihr Musikschule an der Universität für Kultur und Künste von St. Petersburg ab. Schon während ihrer Ausbildung gewann sie internationale Wettbewerbe undnahm an Festivals in Italien, St. Petersburg und Kiew, Ukraine, teil. Sehr erfolgreich war ihr Duo-Album „YanaMaria“ gemeinsam mit Marie Selezneva – ausschließlich mit Kompositionen und Arrangements von Vladimir Popolzin. Ein besonderes Konzert für sie war 2009 im Kreml in Moskau, als der russische Akkordeonist ValeryKovtun sie neben dem amerikanischen Jazz-Akkordeonisten Art Van Damme engagierte. Im Juli 2011 haben sie ein Konzert im Rahmen des International Accordion Festival in Palanga, Litauen, gegeben. Der litauische Akkordeonist Raimondas Sviackevičius engagierte sie– und das Fachpublikum sog begeistert ihre einzigartige Musik auf. Auf dem Programm standen vorwiegend Kompositionen von Vladimir Popolzin wie „Präludium und Allegro“, „Sommerabend in Palanga“, „Côte d'Azur“ und „Al and Bobby“, aber auch Jazz- Arrangements des italienischen Liedes „Volare“ von Modugno und der Zigeunerromanze „Lang ist der Weg“ von Fomin, der Tango nuevo-Klassiker „Vuelvo al sur“ von Piazzolla und der Hit „Tequila“ von Rio. Besonders die Mischung aus volkstümlichen Themen und Jazz-Improvisation führte zu Bravo-Rufen der Zuhörer. Im September/Oktober 2011 werden die beiden wieder auf Deutschland-Tournee sein – vorwiegend im Rhein-Main-Gebiet. Vielleicht ergeben sich daraus neue Kontakte mit Verantwortlichen von Akkordeonorchestern, denn ihr Auftritt im Rahmen eines Jahreskonzertes ist sicher ein besonderes Highlight für die Mitglieder und die Zuhörer, von alle noch lange schwärmen können. |

 ‘And The Accordions Played - Isles FM’ is a compilation CD featuring accordionists and accordion-led bands who have appeared on the Scottish radio station ‘Isles FM’. Isles FM is the volunteer run community radio station for the Scotland's Western Isles, founded in 1998. It broadcasts 24 hours a day and plays a varied mix of music and chat. | Picture above, Jimmy Stewart playing in movie Night Passage (1957). The Accordions Worldwide news for August 15th 1997 reported that the Hollywood actor James Stewart (1908-97) had recently died. Stewart was one of most prominent people of his time to play the accordion, not only recreationally, but also semi-professionally and in three of his movies. (James Stewart’s biography is in ‘An A to Z of the Accordion, Volume 2’) JIMMY STEWART REMEMBERED AS AN ACCORDIONIST IN LIFE MAGAZINE Contributed by Faithe Deffner, President of the American Accordionists' Association When actor Jimmy Stewart passed away last month, Hollywood lost one of its foremost leading men of the golden age of film and the accordion world lost a great exponent of our favourite instrument. Life magazine said it all in a double-page spread photograph of the late star playing his accordion. Some of the actor's biography speaks of the role his accordion played throughout his long and colourful life. "While in college, he went on the road with a magician. It was Jimmy's job to play the accordion during awkward moments." "At Princeton University, his ability to play the accordion helped him win a role in a Dramatic production. After graduating, he accepted an offer from Josh Logan to join the University Players, a summer stock group. It was his job to play the accordion in the tea room next to the theatre and do some small walk-on parts". Alluding to Stewart's lifelong interest in the accordion, "He obviously did much more than just tinker with the instrument." Jimmy was often photographed with his accordion and sometimes played it in his films. |

| The 21st annual Cotati Accordion Festival will be held on August 20th and 21st, 9.45 am to 8.30 pm both days, in La Plaza Park, Cotati, Northern California. An extra feature of this year’s festival is ‘Behind the Bellows: A Documentary About the Accordion’, which will be screened both days, at 1pm and 5pm at the Lions Club Building, directly across the street from the main event. Admission is free. The hour long movie features commentary and performances by accordion legends such as Anthony Galla-Rini, Dick Contino, Frank Marocco, Art Van Damme, Carmen Carrozza, Stefan Hussong, Guy Klucevsek, and many others. The film traces the history and the variety of the accordion family of instruments and their impact on popular culture. All welcome. | On Sunday August 28th, 7.30pm, the quartet CT Tango Ensemble perform in a concert in the ‘Jazz at the Nassau’ series at the Nassau Centre Groote Schuur High School, Palmyra Road, Newlands, South Africa. Also appearing will be the jazz quartet Babu. The CT Tango Ensemble perform music by A. Piazzolla, C. Lazar, S. Angelov, and others. Their line-up is Stanislav Angelov - bandoneon and accordion, Willie van Zyl - saxophones and clarinet, Albert Combrink – piano, and Charles Lazar - double bass.  A new music club, the Northern Box & Fiddle Club, opens at the Hilton Hotel & Country Club, Templepatrick, County Antrim BT39 0DD, Northern Ireland (Junction 5, M2), on Wednesday September 7th, 8pm. The Grand Opening Night is a concert featuring the popular Irish accordionist Seamus Shannon. The Northern Box & Fiddle Club, organized by accordionist Amanda Robinson, will meet on the first Wednesday of the month, and all musicians are welcome.  An accordion symposium, ‘Thinking Outside the Squeeze Box’, will take place from September 23rd to 25th at venues in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The symposium will celebrate the way accordionists have been mixing traditional music with new approaches. There will be jam sessions, dance parties, and workshops on topics ranging from ‘Techniques of Rock Accordion’ to ‘Stretching the Horizons of the Button Box’.
