Mika Väyrynen performs World Premiere

Mika VäyrynenFinnish accordionist Mika Vayrynen recently appeared at the The Loviisa Sibelius Festival where he performed the world premiere of Paavo Korpijaakko´s work "Niin Kauan Minä Tramppaan" for Accordion and String Quintet. The work is loosely based on the Finnish folksong of the same name.

Previous works for accordion by Paavo Korpijaakko include Metamorphoses for Accordion and Strings, Sonata No. 1 "Ultra" and the Peer Gynt Fantasy, all dedicated to and premiered by Mika Väyrynen. Paavo Korpijaakko is currently working on Sonata No. 2 for solo accordion, which will be premiered 2017 by Mika, during his 50th birthday celebration year.

Making his 10th appearance at The Loviisa Sibelius Festival, Mika was also invited to perform the work of the renowned Finnish composer Jouni Kaipainen who passed away in late 2015. His work for solo accordion, called "Placido Op. 68" was premiered by Mika Väyrynen at The Loviisa Sibelius Festival 2009 in the presence of composer. This year piece was performed in his memory. Mika also performed Mussorgsky's Pictures at and Exhibition (complete), Dvorak´s Bagatellen, Ravel's Pavane, Handels Passacaglia and some chamber music by Piazzolla.

In addition to Mika, other guest performers at the festival included Jan-Erik Gustafsson (Artistic director of the festival), Anna-Liisa Bezrodny, Linda Bärlund, Alexander Zemtsov, Andrei Baranov, Siret Lust, Diana Ketler and City of Lohja Symphony Orchestra.

A Show of Camaraderie at Shashank - Lelo Niko Concert, Chennai - India

Lelo NikoThe Park’s New Festival is about new and the contemporary music. To engage with it one needs a different orientation. It is a challenge to assess such performances.

This year, the festival brought together flautist Shashank Subramanyam with the European Lelo Niko Trio, comprising accordionist Lelo Niko, bassist Thommy Anderson and Cimbalom player, George Mihalache. Ojas Adhiya from Mumbai was on the tabla. The group had the audience in raptures.

The concert showcased the musicians’ virtuosity and zest for music, leaving a strong impression of warm camaraderie among them as they interacted with each other, picking up from where the other left and enjoying each other’s music. Flute and accordion came across as the lead instruments with the bass and the cimbalom mostly providing crucial support of rhythm and texture. Ojas delighted with his joyful playing.

The first piece, ‘Hora,’ a composition of Lelo’s, was a riot of colour. Persian in inspiration, with close spaced notes flying off the instruments at dizzying speeds, it left no doubt about the command the musicians wielded over their respective instruments. The second piece began with beautiful movements of raga Hemavati by Shashank, some breathtaking phrases weaving a gentle tapestry that the other musicians dived in and out of. The response of Lelo and Thommy in the middle of the piece was riveting. After the restless frolic of the first piece this did offer oases of tranquillity.

‘The Gypsy Song’ was a purely European affair. The trio played the piece with Lelo leading the other two masterfully, and the three created some classy music. Lelo Niko’s solo interlude showed why he is celebrated.

His showmanship came to the fore when he slowly rose from his seat and walked almost precariously on the edge of the stage moving stylishly with his instrument, now cajoling it, now pushing it, now pounding it to finish with a flourish for the audience to break out into applause.

The bass player is typically not the most dominating performer on stage and Thommy offered quiet, but strong rhythmic and harmonic support, enhancing the joy of the experience. He offered a traditional dance piece from Northern Sweden. Shashank etched out a landscape of longing with notes from Madhuvanti/Dharmavati scales followed predictably by Ojas’ solo foray, and an enjoyable interaction between the flute and the accordion.

George played a short, delightful piece on the cimbalom in seven beats. The cimbalom is classified as a hammered dulcimer, somewhat like the santoor, but with a heavier sound. The piece that was ‘in Kalyani’ did not come together like the others did.

There were flashes of brilliance, with the broad sweeps across octaves, by Shashank and the impromptu jamming between Shashank and Lelo.

It included an interesting composition of Shashank’s with complex rhythmic structuring. One serious challenge of pitting Carnatic music with other traditions is its use of just intonation. Even if the ‘same’ notes as Kalyani were produced on the accordion, they sounded different because of the variations between even and just/pure tempered scales. But that is something to be overlooked in a venture like this and to their credit there were not too many such jarring moments. Only when Lelo played in quick succession to the flute did this arise on a couple of occasions.

Another piece called ‘Mintu’ which transposed scales in quick succession, a difficult feat to pull off on the flute, was followed by the concluding piece, F# Minor. We were told it is a traditional ending piece in Lelo’s culture. It is interesting how traditions across the globe seek to end with minor scales.

One marveled at the process of collaboration — of listening to the other, of finding ways to come together, of writing the music, practising it together and finally being able to deliver it with panache on stage.

For Ranvir Shah, curator of this festival, “Transnational collaboration shows how our culture engages with other cultures”. Certainly the easy camaraderie and understanding as well as the quality of music suggested that it engages rather well.

It takes vision, courage and grit to put together a festival such as this and it is to the credit of Chennai that among the Sankarabharanams and Begadas, it is warmly receptive to this kind of music too.

Well paid Gig - Call for Cast for Commercial, New York – USA

Treanna Lawrence writes: I work for a casting company called Cast Partner in NY and we are looking for accordion players of all levels for a commercial. I think it could be a really interesting and fun opportunity (and if they are booked the job pays of course).

The shoot pays $500 for the rehearsal day, $1000 for the shoot day, and anyone used in the final cut of the commercial will be paid $3000 - so this might be a great opportunity. The project shoots one or two days this month.

In order to be considered we just need the interested person to send us a self-tape selfie video showing us their playing. Doesn’t need to be long at all and as mentioned we are looking for people of all levels!

Hope to hear from you soon and I would love to answer any questions you may have.

Two New Works by Douglas Ward, Charnwood Publishing - UK

Charnwood Publishing header
Douglas WardTwo new works have been released by well known UK composer and performer Douglas Ward, published by Charnwood Publishing.

Catalog No: DW936 Aria No. 1
Standard: Grade 5
Approximate playing time: 2 mins

This composition starts quietly, with a treble motif that is slightly haunting in character. It is written in D minor, but travels through several bass chord changes to end in its relative major key – D major. It encourages a really emotional interpretation, almost with the freedom of rubato. The basses take the performer through a range of both solo notes and chords with bass and counter-bass notes, with a few surprises and a melodic ending that almost fades away. The composition requires good bellows control and fingering, and includes numerous phrasing and articulation guidelines.

Catalog No: DW937 About Time
Standard: Grade 6
Approximate playing time: 2 mins 20 secs

This jazzy piece is written mainly in 5/4 with an occasional bar or more in 4/4 time, and is written in Eb major. It helps the performer to count with ease because the treble melody is set in phrases that simply flow well across established time zones. The treble melody has, in part, an underlying melodic counterpart. The bass accompaniment includes a catchy two-bar solo (and a little surprise key change), accents and tied notes to support the swinging feel and rhythmic content. It is based on only one three-note chord, so it can be played on both standard bass and free bass instruments.

The Douglas Ward page is now listing over 80 compositions and arrangements of eSheet and printed music available from Charnwood Publishing. Purchase with credit card online.
