Zhang Ziqiang, Former President of China Accordion Association Passes Away - Chinaby Harley Jones |
"One of the founding fathers of the accordion, Mr Zhang Ziqiang passed away at the age of ninety. The accordion world is very sad. Good bye old friend." "Zhang Ziqiang, born in 1929 in Shanghai, is a professor of Chinese People's Liberation Army Academy of Arts, honorary president of the Accordion Association of Chinese Musicians Association, part-time professor of Music Education Department of the China Conservatory of Music and distinguished professor of the Art College in Beijing Normal University. He used to be the supervisor of the Beijing accordion professional group, the third president of the Accordion Association and the deputy director of the fifth social musical Commission of Chinese Musicians Association as well as the accordion performer of the General Political Department Art Ensemble of Chinese People's Liberation Army." Estonian Tiit Kalluste Presented CIA Merit Award - Estoniaby Mikk Langeproon |

The Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) awarded Estonian accordionist Tiit Kalluste (picture left) with a “Merit Award” this month. On October 13th Tiit Kalluste played a concert with his quintet at the “Jazzkaar” jazz festival which was held at the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn. At the end of the concert the General Secretary of the CIA, Kimmo Mattila, presented Tiit the award for his notable career as an accordionist and a positive co-operation with the CIA. Kimmo Mattila the CIA General Secretary said: “I like very much Tiit Kalluste’s music and his wonderful way of accordion playing. He has created a personal style combining traditional jazz and contemporary Nordic music. His concert together with young jazz musicians was simply great!”. The Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) is a worldwide organization consisting of 43 member organizations around the world. The CIA was founded in 1935, and is one of the oldest international music organization in the world. The CIA is a member of the International Music Council, which is an official partner of the UNESCO. The Estonian Accordion Association (Eesti Akordioniliit) has been a full member of the CIA since 2004. In March this year Eesti Akordioniliit hosted the annual CIA Winter Congress in Tallinn. Tiit Kalluste was the President of the Eesti Akordioniliit from 1999 to 2011 and during this time the association was appointed as a Premiere Voting Member of the CIA. The CIA Merit Award is the highest recognition of the international accordion movement. It is awarded to one or two distinguished musicians each year, who have made an exceptional career with the accordion. The Merit Award is authorised by the CIA General Assembly, thus it reflects a worldwide approval and recognition. This year the CIA Merit Award was also awarded to (Crystal) Wang Congyu from China. |

The Menomonee Falls Symphony Orchestra (MFSO - picture below) Winter Pops Concert featuring accordionist Stas Venglevski (picture left) will be held on December 14th. The concert is entitled “Christmas Fairy Tales and Fantasies" and will be held at the Hamilton Fine Arts Center in Sussex, Wisconsin beginning at 7.30pm. Music includes the "March of the Tin Soldiers", "The Snow Maiden", and "Babes in Toyland". Stas will perform a concerto by Galla-Rini, along with music from The Nutcracker Suite and other holiday favorites! Stas is an accordionist, a musician, an arranger, an entertainer and a teacher. His repertoire includes his original compositions, a broad range of classical, contemporary and ethnic music. The 35th International Accordion Festival will be held in the White Hall of the Polytechnic University in St Petersburg from October 27th to November 2nd, 2019. The festival Art Director for 35 years is Honored Artist of Russia, Prof. Alexander Dmitriev (picture left). Results of XII International Accordion Composition Competition “Francisco Escudero” – Spainby Christine Johnstone |
The XII International Accordion Composition Competition “Francisco Escudero” was held in Hernani, Gipuzkoa last month. The objective of the contest is to promote the creation of pieces for solo accordion and for accordion in chamber music. The competition jury comprised of Zuriñe Fernández Gerenabarrena, Eugenia Luc and Iñaki Alberdi. Accordion and bandoneón player Julien Labro will perform at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts in New York on October 18th at 7.30pm. This is the second concert in the 2019-2020 Friends of Good Music performance season. In a concert entitled “The Art of the Accordion,” Labro will guide the audience through the history of accordion and bandoneon, performing works by Albeniz, Bach, Scarlatti, a French medley, tangos by Astor Piazzolla, and some compositions of his own. Video: Piazzolla - Romance del Diablo arranged by James Crabb and performed with the Omega Ensemble in Sydney, 2014. Accordionist James Crabb (picture below left) will give a concert series in the UK from October 24th to 27th organised by Sinfonia Cymru. James will be accompanied by an orchestra of young players from Sinfonia Cymru. Their program will include a variety of pieces such as Astor Piazzolla (arr. Accordionist Sergey Osokin will hold a concert and masterclasses in Surgut, Russia from October 24th to 28th. The Masterclasses will be held at the Surgut College of Music, St. Enthusiasts, d. 28 in Surgut. Subjects to be covered are original masterwork by accordion, baroque and romantic styles. The concert will be held on October 26th in the College Organ Hall at 6pm. Sergey will play his own arrangements such as “C'est si bon” by Henri Betty and “Whispering” by Paul Whiteman. Accordionist Gorka Hermosa will present his new CD “Atlantia Ë Ria” together with flamenco guitarist José Luis Montón and Guinean singer Piruchi Apo with concerts in Spain over the next month. The “Lemon Bucket Orkestra” will perform a Halloween concert with Slava Doval Dance Fusion & The Oxygen Orkestar at Spiritbar at the Hume Hotel in Nelson on October 31st. The group which includes accordionist Marichka Marczyk along with trumpet, saxophone, guitars, violins, trombone, percussions and vocalists play music based on musical traditions of the Balkan region, such as Balkan, klezmer, gypsy and punk. Registrations are underway for the IDEAS Symposium 2.0 for Digital Accordion which will be held at the Avalon Inn & Resort in Warren, Ohio from November 6th to 10th, 2019. This year’s event will include a new approach which has been designed to assist digital accordion enthusiasts to learn the technology of their digital instruments. The technology department of GR8 IDEAS Symposium 2.0 have orchestrated a set of classroom type sessions with hands on training that will build up your technical knowledge so that you can achieve your goals artistically and creatively. The classroom sessions are organized into three levels: Tech Level I, II, III to grow your knowledge from your starting point. Tech Level I will focus on operation fundamentals, menu navigation, backup, restore, sets and user programs, and sound selection. Tech Level II will focus the next stage of learning with topics such as user program creation, combining sounds, organ and percussion programming, sound editing and recording. Tech Level III will focus on advanced programming, MIDI configuration, effects usage and editing, comprehensive discussions on User Programs and Sets, as well as student initial topics.
