Ksenija Sidorova steals the show @ BBC Last Night of the Proms, London – UKby Rob Howard |
Latvian accordionist Ksenija Sidorova made her Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday September 11th, and stole the show at the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert. Early in the evening she was interviewed by the presenter Katie Dereham, about herself, her music and the accordion. Ksenija gave commanding performances that entranced the full house audience and the millions watching worldwide on television – a truly great advertisement for the accordion. In the first half she performed ‘Fantasie on a Theme of Piazzola’ by Franck Angelis, and in the second half performed ‘Libertango’, by Astor Piazzolla, and then accompanied the Australian tenor Stuart Skelton as he sang ‘Sur’ by Anibal Troilo. Expressive and passionate, Ksenija’s performances brought the audience to its feet, and left them wanting more. Ksenija’s appearances came part way through a diverse concert that also paid tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks in the USA. The conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers Sakari Oramo, from Finland, commented that the evening reflected “the healing power of music”. Later, Ksenija commented “Last night was absolutely magical and unforgettable. Back in March 2019 I was due to perform at the BBC Proms but had to cancel due to doctor's recommendation not to travel (I was heavily pregnant). I would never imagine I'd had to cancel something of such significance but, of course, then it was a right decision. And good things come to those who wait! I was honoured to step on stage of the Royal Albert Hall last night, so warmly received by the orchestra and Sakari Oramo and, of course, the audience! This was like nothing before! My debut as an accordion-soloist on the Last Night of the Proms, and a return of concerts with audience! I thank everyone who made it happen. It wasn't easy but we made it!” |
