13th World Music Festival, Innsbruck – Austriaby Christine Johnstone |
The 13th World Music Festival will be held in Innsbruck, Austria from May 30th to June 2nd, organised by the Deutscher Harmonika-Verband e.V. (DHV). Several thousand participants and visitors are thrilled every three years when the Deutscher Harmonika-Verband holds this festival. The event will include a competition for accordion orchestras, ensembles and bands plus solo categories for harmonica and diatonic accordions. In addition a number of concerts will be held as well as the “Evening of the Nations” event in the Congresshaus Innsbruck to mark this unique festival worldwide. Concert performers include last festival competition winners Akkordeonorchester Baltmannsweiler e. V. (pictured - conducted by Thomas Bauer), The Guardia Nueva Tango Orchestra (Finland) directed by Raimo Vertainen, duo Joe Kenney (marimba) and Felix Fritschi (accordion), 1. Kölner Akkordeonorchester 1935 e. V. (conducted by Hans-Günther Kölz and Matthias Henneck), Southern Cross Accordion Ensemble (formed especially for this event from Australia and New Zealand), and Fireworks of the Styrian Harmonica - young prize winners Michael Rettig, Alexander Pamer and Mattia Demetz. “The Year of the Duo” at 79th Annual ATG Accordion Festival – USAby Rita Davidson Barnea |
The 79th annual ATG Festival will feature “The Year of the Duo” and they have some outstanding duos to delight, entertain, and mesmerize you. This year’s event will be held in Denver, Colorado from July 24th to 27th at the Double Tree Hotel, 7801 E. Orchard Rd, Green-wood Village, Denver, Colorado under the direction of ATG President, Joe Natoli. Duo performances will be given by Kim and Dan Christian who will be bringing their special brand of technical and artistic entertainment with spicy and original arrangements for which they are well-known. John and Madalynn Neu will delight you with not only their own brand of meticulously technical and diverse arrangements but will also be performing with their string octet called “Voice of the Wood Chamber Players.” Jamie Maschler and Gabe Hall-Rodrigues will play Brazilian rhythms and jazz for you with their fresh and fully energetic passion for this beautiful and captivating music. Finally, Augustinas Raukauskas (accordion) & Greta Staponkute (viola), are recent Coupe Mondiale winners who will amaze you with incredible musicianship, performing as if they were one person. To further support the “Year of the Duo”, Joe Natoli will be performing a new piece for accordion duo entitled “Friendship” with Kenn Baert. Soloist Betty Jo Simon (former ATG president and current board member) will also be performing. She may not be a “duo” but she can make her Roland digital accordion sound like an entire orchestra! Additionally, a new work by Joe Natoli commissioned by the AAA this year will also be performed at the ATG on Friday July 26th. It is called “Child’s Play (A Tribute)” and is written for 2 accordions, cello, and a large contingent of percussion, conducted by Joan Cochran Sommers (picture left - renowned conductor, former ATG President and Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri-Kansas City). Joan will also conduct the popular ATG Orchestra and all accordionists attending the festival are invited to participate, no matter what age or ability. The Festival Orchestra will perform on the Saturday evening Gala Concert. The international project "May 6th World Accordion Day" is supported by the Macedonian Association of Accordionists “Ljubiteli na klasichna muzika” (MAA) – Skopje organising various successful events. This year for the 11th time the association organized a formal concert marking the celebration of the international event and birthday celebration of our instrument, the accordion. This May 6th marks the 190th anniversary of the accordion's patent! The concert was supported by the national program of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia. The World Accordion Day Gala Concert was held at the Philharmony in Skopje, on May 6th, and again, was promoted as one of the most prestigious cultural events during the month of May in the country. Photo report at: 2019 Republic of North Macedonia The concert featured renowned artists and accordion students from the class of Prof. Zorica Karakutovska performing works by Zolotaryov, Derbenko, Bete Ilin, Franck Angelis, Piazzolla, Gorka Hermosa and others. On this year’s concert, the composition "Sunrice" by Bete Ilin had its premiere performance by “AkordioM” (Zorica Karakutovska and Filip Stameski) with a string orchestra (picture below). The concert hall was fully occupied with a very enthusiastic audience. The new building of the Philharmony offers a high-quality venue which the artists fully utilized and the crowd appreciated when the audience rewarded the performers with well-deserved prolonged standing ovations (picture top). |

Poland Golden Cross Award Presented to Ricardas Sviackeviciusby Christine Johnstone |
Accordionist, teacher and conductor Ricardas Sviackevicius (Lithuania) has been awarded the Poland Golden Cross for merit in developing the culture of Lithuania and Poland. The Cross of Merit (Polish: Krzyz Zaslugi) is a Polish civil state decoration established on June 23, 1923, to recognize services to the state. At the time of its establishment in 1923, the Cross of Merit was the highest civilian award in Poland. It was awarded to citizens who went beyond the call of duty in their work for the country and society as a whole. Ricardas Sviackevicius is a professor at LMTA Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius, Lithuania. Accordions Worldwide congratulates Ricardas for being the recipient of this award. |

Dick Contino Tribute Show at Chicago Accordion Club - USAby Christine Johnstone |
The Chicago Accordion Club will host a Dick Contino Tribute Show on May 20th at 310 W. Butterfield Rd, Elmhurst, Illinois 60126. The event will begin with pre-meeting music by accordionist Bob Hoge who is a member of the “Snowbird Polka Band” in Florida and also “The Bruce Korosa Band”. This will be followed by a performance by Lenny Leto, who will dazzle everyone with his own well-known style of playing some of Dick’s most popular tunes! Then Judy Contino will take the main stage and present the “Dick Contino Celebration”. Judy will deliver an audio-visual presentation and celebration of the life of Dick Contino (picture left). Cody McSherry is performing on Sunday May 19th, details on the poster. Cody McSherry is fifteen years old and is a sophomore at Lancaster Catholic High School in Lancaster, PA. He has been playing accordion since the age of six. Cody also plays piano, pipe organ, hammered dulcimer, harp, and sings. He is currently studying accordion with Mary Tokarski (in Connecticut) and voice with Joanne Abrom. n 2016, Cody won the Lancaster’s Got Talent competition held by Lancaster Newspapers and is a two-time winner of the Carmen Carrozza Scholarship, Junior Division, held by the American Accordionists’ Association. In November 2018 Cody performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Millennium Stage in Washington, DC. |

Vardos Trio which includes accordionist Sophia Chapman, will present a concert entitled “From Myth to Masterpiece” at the Primrose Potter Salon, 31 Sturt St, Melbourne, Victoria. The event, which will take place on May 24th at 6pm will be presented by the Melbourne Recital Centre & Vardos. Their program will include works by Bartok, Chopin, Brahms, Liszt and Dvorak as well as some Romanian Folk Dances, and gypsy-style classics that reflect ancient beginnings performed on early instruments such as the three-string viola and hurdy gurdy. The Carismàtico Tango Band will perform in concert at the Dorchester Corn Exchange in Dorchester on June 21st at 8pm organised by Dorchester Arts. The group includes Karen Street (accordion), Jonathon Taylor (piano), Andy Tweed (saxophone), Dave Manington (bass) and Rob Millett (percussion). The will entertain with a mix of emotionally charged compositions of Argentinian composer Saúl Cosentino alongside music by his mentor Astor Piazzolla and Karen’s own creative and nuanced compositions.
