Jon Persson Accordion Classes for Chinese Seafarers – Pacific Oceanby Rob Howard |
Video above: Londonderry Air ("Danny Boy") by Jon Perssson with The MiniSymphony (Accordion/String Quintet). Beginner accordion classes were recently conducted for Chinese passengers on a 3,000-passenger ship in the fleet of the Princess Cruise Line, one of the largest cruise lines in the world. The classes were limited to 20 students, open to people aged 8-88, and were conducted by American pianist/accordionist, and long-time Princess Cruises musician Jon Persson (picture left). As the classes were only 30 minutes long, and held twice during each 5 day cruise, there was not a lot of time to delve deeply into accordion technique. The lessons focused on a very easy tune that was familiar in many countries, and to the Chinese people, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Moreover, the accordions purchased by the cruise line were basically toy accordions, but were perfectly fine for this purpose. Persson is not a speaker of Mandarin, so it was necessary for the lessons to be translated by another member of the ships staff, which sometimes made the lessons move a bit more slowly than normal. Nevertheless, the sessions were light-hearted and enjoyed by all, and well-attended, so that the 20 accordions provided were snapped up quickly by the early arrivals. Tamburitzans Celebrate 80th Season – USAby Joan Grauman Morse, AAA Historian |
Since 1973, I have been annually attending the mesmerizing performances of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, the longest continuously running multicultural song and dance company in the United States. All of the members are full-time students who receive scholarships for their participation in this highly regarded troupe whose mission is to provide deserving students an education and to perpetuate the varying folk cultures and traditions of Eastern Europe. Picture left: Joan Grauman, Marko Maslakovic and Joe Cerrito. These young highly skilled musicians, dancers and singers have delighted audiences all over the world with beautifully choreographed dance sets, hauntingly beautiful music and intricately embroidered costumes for 80 years. On July 1, 2016, the Tamburitzans became an independent nonprofit organization, the “Pittsburgh International Folk Arts Institute”. Duquesne University gave the troupe their buildings, vehicles, instruments, costumes, equipment, as well as funding to help ensure their future success. Students may now attend other Pittsburgh-based universities as well as Duquesne. Each year, the Tamburitzans create a new program which they bring to appreciative audiences all over the country. This year, being their 80th anniversary, they “went all out” and the program is truly spectacular! It features the music and dances of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Armenia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, as well as sets from France and India. There is still time to see the Tamburitzans perform during the current season, which ends on June 9 (see downloadable schedule below). Of course, we all took notice of the excellent and very personable accordionist, Marko Maslakovic from Belgrade, Serbia, who is studying for his Master’s degree in corporate communications. The entire ensemble is superb, as are the dancers and singers. A must see!! Picture below: Tamburitzan clarinetist & accordionist Marko Maslakovic. Future Performances. 20th Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships, Carrickfergus – UKby Clyde Johnston |
The 20th Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships took place at the Loughshore Hotel, Carrickfergus, on February 25th. This festival was another huge success with reaction from spectators and competitors alike being very favourable towards the festival which ran like clockwork in a very relaxed and friendly spirit. The NI Championships are run under the rules of the National Accordion Organisation (NAO) of the United Kingdom and are a qualifying heat for the 2017 NAO UK Championships, held at The Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool, April 21st to 24th. Organised by Clyde Johnston (picture right) it is the largest accordion festival in Northern Ireland and again attracted a good entry. Clyde was delighted to again welcome competitors from the Chilton School of Music in County Cavan and Gerry Kelly’s Accordion School from County Meath as well as other entries from County Meath, County Dublin, Southern England and Glasgow in addition to the local competitors. There were also trade stands on display by Alan Shute, Sean O'Neill, Rob Howard, Glitterbug Bagz, Frazer Mclellan, and Scotland Accordions, which added great interest and atmosphere to the festival. Clyde was also delighted to welcome surprise guests to the festival in the form of top UK duettists Nigel Pasby and Helen Newton, from Hungerford, Berkshire. They only decided to attend at the last minute but enthralled the audience by performing, on borrowed accordions, a few delightful duets in the afternoon. The adjudicators, Ivan Black, and Sarah McEvoy were greatly impressed not only by the high standard of playing but also with the smooth and efficient manner in which the Championships were run. The Irish Examiner Newspaper Featured Jackie Daly - Irelandby Harley Jones |
Video: Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh Sullivan's, Britches Full of Stitches. Some excerpts from the article about his 6 decades of music making. In Jackie Daly’s case, the title of laoch, or hero, is added to that of Gradam Ceoil winner, All-Ireland senior accordion champion — the only Corkman to win either award — and doyen of Sliabh Luachra box-playing. His anecdotes are as much a tradition of his performances as the tunes. He tells another anecdote about Galway accordion maestro Joe Burke, who visited Jackie in hospital in Cork after he suffered a brain haemorrhage. “The doctor was testing me and Joe said ‘Doctor I know what’s wrong with him. His head is full of slides and polkas rather than decent jigs and reels’. I said ‘Joe, thank you for visiting me. I’m going to compose a tune in your honour’. I did, and it’s Joe Burke’s polka. People say to him Joe, play your polka, so I definitely got my own back. He’s never played it.” |
