| This year's street festival on the banks of the Danube in the large square of Budapest, held to celebrate the French National Day, July 14th, featured the Zoltan Orosz Trio. The trio was joined by the singer and actor Attila Bardóczy. This concert was organized by the French Institute and attracted numerous visitors to listen to a musical repertoire that included mainly French songs. This combination won first price in 1996 at the Paris International song competition for the best foreign artistes. |

 The 2009 ATG Competition and Festival ‘Accordion Renaissance’ will be held from August 13th to 16th at the Hilton Minneapolis/St.Paul Airport Mall of America, 3800 American Boulevard East, Bloomington, Minneapolis, MN.Appearing this year will be the 2007 Coupe Mondiale World Accordion Champion Alexander Sevastian. Also appearing is Roland artist Don McMahon, former National Champion Jeff Lisenby and John Scaffeo. Workshops include topics and demonstrations by Dr. Helmi Harrington and Dr. Marion Jacobson, Musik Garten, Orkestar Bez Ime, Alexander Sevastian, Don McMahon, Michele Boddicker Scheffler, Button Box America, and many others. James Touchi-Peters, Conductor Emeritus of the Minnesota Philharmonic Orchestra, is the guest conductor of the ATG Festival Orchestra.  In June the 11th Music Award DAM competition, organised by the German Harmonica Association in connection with the accordion teacher association, took place in Baden-Baden. Michael Rettig was one of the outstanding competitors.As the youngest participant (18 years), Michael Rettig for the first time competed in the Professional Virtuoso category, and reached 49 out of 50 points, winning this section. As already announced in www.diatonic-news.com, this was his second major success in 2009, winning in May the world championship of the diatonic accordion in St. Kanzian/Carinthia-Austria. His program, under the guidance of his teacher Vitali Neifert, included pieces by Bach, Repnikov, Meisl, Marocco, Piazzolla, Vlasov, and Gridin.  Yehuda Oppenheimer, "the father" of the accordion in Israel, now 84 years old, has just published his 100th work on the MusicForAccordion.com website. The publications include original music by Yehuda Oppenheimer as well as arrangements from various periods of history, for solo and duets.Yehuda Oppenheimer remembers being part of the Tropheé Mondiale Jury in 1966 in Valencia when Richard Galliano won the competition playing his composition which was the test piece: ‘Ciaccona’ Variations on "La Folia" an old Portuguese folk tune.. The 100th work is an original composition (duet) named ‘Eilat’ (catalog OY600). This composition was used as the main theme of the movie ‘Love at Second Sight’, which was produced in 1998 and directed by the renowned Israeli filmmaker and actress Michal Bat-Adam. The movie is an intriguing tale of romantic obsession in present-day Tel Aviv. This work is also available as a solo. This is a site dedicated to diatonic, concertina, button box, bandoneon type instruments, and a new edition is published on the first of each month. This Diatonic News site is unique, in that contributions are published in the language there are sent and viewers can use an online translation system if they need. |

 There was a break from tradition in this year’s ceremony at the Royal Academy of Music in that one of the graduates was invited to play. Accordionist Ksenija Sidorova was chosen and gave a brilliant performance ‘Overture in the French Style BWV 831’ - J.S. Bach. Ksenija was also presented with an outstanding student award, the Council of Honour Prize, for a highly original contribution to the development and evolution of music. Ksenija's performance in the presence of such a distinguished audience of world renowned artistes that included Barbara Bonney, was wonderful publicity for the accordion. And she can look forward to a busy and highly successful concert career. | Très récemment en Auvergne, ont eu lieu 3 concerts exceptionnels du groupe de chanson-rock « La Milca » avec la fanfare alternative de « La Goutte Au Nez ». Le concept est simple : 13 musiciens sur scène venus confronter 2 univers différents. D’abord celui de La Milca : de la chanson française inspirée, rugueuse et soutenue par l’accordéon fougueux de Domi Emorine. La Goutte au Nez, ensuite : une musique aux accents de Franck Zappa qui pose un univers déstructuré où le visuel prend toute sa place. Au milieu des cuivres, accordéons, vibraphone, guitares et percussions, les musiciens se mêlent, se croisent, se remplacent dans une alchimie explosive. Pendant plus de 2h30 de spectacle, les deux groupes ont ainsi cuisiné leur goût du rock, de la fête et de leur anticonformisme. Ca chante, ça cogne, ça pulse et le public est gagné par l’énergie dégagée sur scène et même au-delà puisque le concert se termine au milieu de la salle, dans un bain bouillant de chaleur humaine…du bonheur à l’état pur.  On Thursday, July 2nd, the wonderful Caligari-Theatre cinema-stage in Wiesbaden was the venue for a unique project: an accordion concert ‘Musica Leggera’, followed by the documentary film ‘Accordion Tribe’. The initiative and musical director of this project was the lecturer Mirjana Petercol (picture right), presenting with her accordion class and other guests an exclusive performance, together with the Road-Movie film by a Swiss film producer. The effect of this ‘Accordion Night’ left a deep impression on the large audience. On that hot summer evening every type of music was presented. After over an hour the programme continued in the foyer of the cinema theatre, and the neo-gothic hall was transformed into a huge meeting place. While the musettes played, the audience held a tasty glass of wine or champagne, and thought themselves to be in France! Finally - the interesting film of 5 accordionists, who travelled around the world, and who displayed their music and their love for the accordion. The audience was filled with enthusiasm and will remember this ‘Accordion Night’ with great affection. Mirjana Petercol was very pleased with the success of the evening, and emphasized the importance of such interesting projects, which wake up the interest of the audience for music and accordion.  Les artistes Grayson Masefield et Petar Maric, 1ers et 2èmes des concours internationaux de Klingenthal (Allemagne), Spoletto (Italie) et Sata-Häme Soi (Finlande), le tout en mai dernier, accompagnaient leur « coach » Frédéric Deschamps pour une tournée de concerts, stages et master classes en Chine (Beijing et Tianjing) du 1er au 9 juillet dernier. Grayson Masefield et Petar Maric ont également été invités à un concert au Conservatoire de Pékin. Le concert de la nouvelle salle de concert de l'Université "C'était génial", selon Cao Xiao-Qing, professeur d'accordéon au Conservatoire central de musique, et a été grandement apprécié par le public. C’est un véritable festival de musique, technique, charisme et émotions en tout genre que nos deux jeunes artistes offraient au public chinois, dont l’attention, l’écoute et l’enthousiasme n’avaient d’égal que leur motivation à faire pareil ! En effet, tous les élèves chinois de la Master classe de Deschamps voulaient dès le lendemain travailler le même programme que nos jeunes champions du monde afin de préparer la prochaine Coupe Mondiale de Aukland (21 au 29 aout 2009) et le Trophée Mondial du Portugal (23 au 27 septembre). Nous retrouverons tout ce petit monde pendant les cessions de stage Internationaux de Frédéric Deschamps, du 9 au 15 et 15 au 20 aout prochain en France, près de Paris. |

| The clocks in the Academy of Musical Education in Remscheid seem to have a different rhythm, at least during the week after Pentecost, following the 35th training course for accordionists held by the German Harmonica Association, National Association NRW: time was virtually “flying” - full with music and exchange of information with top musicians. Hans-Günther Kölz taught the course ‘Orchester Plus’, a program whose music included ‘The Sound Of Music’, ‘La Campanella’, by Rudolf Würthner, with the 16 years old Mathias Matzke as soloist, ‘Revirado’, by Astor Piazzolla, ‘Olé Salsa“, and ‘Olé Gaupa’. Christine Fischer-Fahs, from Baltmannsweiler, for the first time in Remscheid, taught a course ‘Advanced Orchestra Playing’, with pieces such as ‘Music from the Royal Fireworks’, by Händel, ‘5 Skizzen’, by J. Ganzer, and ‘Cats’, arranged by Thomas Bauer. The most participants were on the course, ‘Sound and Rhythm’, led by Matthias Hennecke. Music included ‘Cat Stevens in Concert’, ‘On The Sunny Side Of The Street’, and ‘Romanze’, by Heinz Gengler. Course V, (‘Ensemble’), with Helmut Quakernack, involved new concert and competition pieces such as ‘Con Sprituoso’, Peter Lohmar. Course VI, ‘Traditional Music’ (Solo and Duo) with Heinz Hox, Philipp Haag, Dorin Grama and Matthias Matzke, offered new inputs for interpretation, using jazz standards with improvisation. The next DHV-Courses in the Academy Remscheid are: • October 24th and 25th 2009 – 7th weekend-seminar, ‘Freude am Musizieren’ (make music with pleasure) for adult accordionists. | From July 16th to 19th, the 14th annual International Accordion Dolomite Festival is taking place in the Dolomite area of northern Italy - the accordion gathering for enthusiasts everywhere. Organized by M° Ernesto Bellus, director of the accordion orchestra ‘Rossini’, of Santa Giustina, the festival features well known artistes such as: Katia Bellus, Duo Poles-Stavar, from Lubiana (virtuosos of the diatonic accordion), the duo Rossato-Tibolla (accordion and piano with a jazz and varieté repertoire), and the Orchestre d'Accordeon ‘J.  ACCO LAND organizes two workshops in Spain, in July and September 2009. The first workshop will take place at San Sebastián (Basque Country), from July 27th to 31st. The second takes place in Madrid, from September 14th to 19th. The workshops will be held by Anne Landa for accordion students, teachers and concert artistes. Subjects include the quality of sound, the control of the bellows, and the control of oneself. Also included by Anne Landa are individual work on repertory-sound, and Alexander Technique lessons.  The Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestra is set to be revived, andall past members and friends are invited to contact Gary Blair. The Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestra was the most successful of the UK orchestras in the 1960s and 1970s, winning many titles year after year in the annual NAO All Britain Championships.  After a decade-long absence, on August 15th and 16th, 11am to 6pm both days, the Twin Cities Polish Festival is back, bringing together Minnesotans to celebrate Polish culture and Polish heritage.
