Kevin Friedrich and Friends Presents Moving Tribute to NZ Servicemen and Women - New Zealand

Kevin Friedrich and Friends
Pictures above: Starlight Trio of Kevin Friedrich, Lionel Reekie and Maurice Jones. Choir accompanied by Kevin Friedrich.

New York based accordionist Kevin Friedrich returned to his home town of Dargaville, New Zealand to present his annual concert, "Afternoon of Music with Kevin Friedrich and Friends".

The 2015 annual fundraising concert for the Dargaville Musuem included moving musical tributes in honor of local servicemen and women. The entire country as well as Australia and the United Kingdom are in the midst of presenting tributes, marking the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli and the 70th Anniversary of the end of WWII.

For Kevin's tribute, he worked with renowned New Zealand composer Gary Daverne to provide 16 minutes of original sound track for a multimedia presentation featuring local servicemen and women, to which Kevin played live. The work titled "This is Our Home" comprised three movements:
I. The Journey, (with backing by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra)
II. Gallipoli,
III. This is Our Home which featured narration and vocals by Lionel Reekie.

The audience was deeply moved by the poignant music, continuing to draw in audible breaths and sighs as the history of the many local people who died in these wars was recognised. Many eyes had tears in them as the audience gained their feet to applaud for a very long time, this stunning video/musical rememberance.

Another original composition commissioned for the concert was a haunting waltz by popular Scottish accordionist Gary Blair, who had composed the piece Waltzing Home for Kevin to play on this program. The beautiful new work was extremely well received by the capacity audience.

The 8th Annual Concert presented by Kevin at Lighthouse Function Center at the Dargaville Museum, was sold out weeks earlier, and featured an array of local and guest talent. The moving concert opened with the Last Post and Rouse along with the raising and lowering of the New Zealand flag in honor of the Service personnel and one of two National Anthems, God Save the Queen performed by the Auckland Accordion Symphonietta conducted by Lionel Reekie.

This 18 piece accordion orchestra then opened the musical part of the concert, with the afternoon going on to feature vocalists, instrumentalists and readings, including performances by Maurice Jones and his daughter Alanah (vocals). Maurice performed with Lionel Reekie as the Starlight Duo, and were joined by Kevin for one number as the Starlight Trio.

A humorous moment occurred when Lionel Reekie and Kevin performed the old time favorite 'I Brought My Harp to the Party, but Nobody asked me to Play'. With some localizing of the words, the adapted song 'I Brought my Accordion to the Concert, but Nobody asked me to Play' included local identities and humor. At the end of the song when the words say 'so I threw the thing away' the audience was amused, and relieved to later find out, that through a quick switch and slight of hand, that the accordion that went hurtling out the door into the carpark, was actually a dummy polystyrene accordion!

The finale of the concert was the multimedia presentation, which elicited a standing ovation, with the concert closing with the second of New Zealand's National Anthem's God Defend New Zealand, followed by the traditional Jam Session.

In this chapter I attempt to cover the most common accordion-related pain complaints that I have encountered in my 50 years of clinical practice."

‘14 Years Ago’: The World’s Largest Accordion Unveiled in April 2001

Giancarlo Francenella & gigantic accordionThe Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending April 20th 2001 included details of the world’s largest playable accordion, designed and constructed in Castelfidardo, Italy, by the master craftsman Giancarlo Francenella. This huge instrument catches the attention and imagination of all who see it, and it has been photographed more times than most accordions.

The Largest Accordion in the World – Italy
Contributed by Beniamino Bugiolacchi

Giancarlo Francenella has made his dream come true by building the largest accordion in the world, a feat which required over one thousand hours of work! The instrument weighs around 200 kg and features 45 treble piano keys, 120 bass buttons, its keyboard is 253 cm high, each key measures 70 cm and the reeds are 10 cm high. The materials used include wood (fir, cedar, mahogany, walnut), metals (aluminium & steel), cardboard, cloth for the bellows and special varnish, etc. This instrument (in perfect working order) would deserve a place in Hollywood's Guinness World of Records.

Giancarlo Francenella, an accomplished craftsman from Castelfidardo, is the owner of Sonerfisa, a workshop which produces reed blocks for most accordion firms in the area, and has a deep passion for the accordion. Always eager to contribute to the initiatives of the Tourism Board and City Council when it comes to promoting the fascinating and rewarding world of accordion craftsmanship at fairs and events (last year in Perugia his work caught the attention of EEC President Romano Prodi), Francenella is well-known for his modesty.

The instrument bears the name "Castelfidardo" and its maker wishes to make it available to all organizations which aim to promote the accordion as a musical instrument and the inventiveness and skill of the craftsmen of the Marche region. This technical masterpiece will be presented at the Disma Music Show in Rimini (April 28th) and will feature during a musical evening at the Astra theatre in Castelfidardo (May 9th) during the celebration for the 20th anniversary of the International Accordion Museum.

Keith Hancock Tour – UK, Belgium, Netherlands

Keith Hancock TourKeith Hancock, originally from Manchester but now living in Vietnam, started his musical life playing the melodeon for Morris dance teams. He later played with various folk bands, most notably the Electropathic Battery Band, and also as a vocal/instrumental duo with his then wife Janet. He became a full-time solo performer in 1983, using the 3-row melodeon. Keith’s first solo album ‘This World We Live In’ was released in 1984, and his second, ‘Madhouse’, was released in 1988. A third album, ‘Born Blue’, appeared in 2005.

Musically, Keith Hancock borders on the edge of rock music in style without losing sight of his folk roots. He is a notable songwriter, politically left of centre, whose lyrics are often hard hitting on a whole range of social issues. In 1990, he assembled the Keith Hancock Band, consisting of folk heavyweight performers Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, and Rauri McFarlane.

Claudio Mendez and Bertram Levy Tango Concert, Washington – USA

‘Postcards from Argentina: A Tribute to Argentine Folklore and Tango Pianists’ is presented on Sunday evening, April 19th, by Argentine pianist Claudio Mendez and bandoneon player Bertram Levy. Together, they present a unique tour of the diverse popular music culture of Argentina through music, stories, and video.

Mendez arrives from Buenos Aires after an extensive European tour in which he presented his ‘Tribute to Argentine Folklore and Tango Pianists’. He and Bertram Levy, of Port Townsend, have been friends for more than a decade and have toured together in both Argentina and the USA. They are joined on Sunday evening by Al Bergstein, who presents video clips to embellish the stories and imagery.

Argentina’s popular music composers have always included wonderful pianists. In this concert, Mendez reinterprets iconic tango and folklore themes, as well as those of lesser-known composers. Mendez said the concert is “a special way to walk through different territories of Argentina music on a journey into this great little cosmos that is the sound of the piano.”

The two are to perform classic tango duets. Levy also presents solo compositions not usually heard on the bandoneon, pieces that explore the complex polyphonic potential of the instrument.

The concert begins at 7pm on Sunday April 19th at First Baptist Church, 1202 Lawrence St, Washington. Admission is $15.
