34th Festival Internazionale Fisarmonica Castelfidardo - Italy

The 34th annual Castelfidardo event runs from 13th to 18th October. The event includes the Castelfidardo Premio and competition clases, a reality show, and features a very rich and comprehensive concert program with a large array of concerts happening throughout the event.

Duo “Una Sinistra” at Rachmaninov Hall - Moscow

On October 11th in the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, was hosted a concert by the duo ‘Una Sinistra’ under the title ‘Creativity Youth’, organized by MBOF ‘New Names’, under the artistic direction of Yuri Medianik.

The concert opened with the work by Viacheslav Semionov, ‘Skaz o Tihom Done’, from the ‘Don Raphsody’. Yuri Medianik (button accordion) joined with the duo - Yulia Amerikova (piano accordion) and Alexander Selivanov (button accordion) – to perform this piece.

The concert program performed by the duo included the original compositions and their own transcriptions of works by F. Couperin, A. Piazzolla, V. Gridin, V. Semionov, Y. Peshkov, and P. Pizzigoni.

The concert concluded with a standing ovation by the happy audience.

The duo ‘Una Sinistra’ was formed in 2003. The duo has won the CIA ‘Coupe Mondiale’, and regularly participates at international festivals in Russia, Finland and Italy.

Successful Hohner-Conservatory students at the Trophée Mondial - Germany

Dorin GramaThe two students from the Hohner Conservatory Trossingen GmbH, Radu Grama Laxgang (top) and Dorin Grama (lower) participated with outstanding success at the 53rd Trophée Mondial de l'Accordéon in Albufeira, Portugal.

Dorin Grama achieved 3rd place in the Senior Variété category, with six concert pieces of different styles and periods (gaining 23.65 points). Radu Laxgang, with pieces by F. Marocco, R. Galliano, I. Ruggieri, and N. Anzaghi, secured himself also an excellent 3rd place (23.32 points) in the Junior Variété (Virtuoso Entertainment Music) category.

The sponsor of these successes is the Matt. Hohner AG of Trossingen, which supported the two young talents with appropriate instruments.

Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberté’s Space Mission – Outer Space

Guy LalibertéGuy Laliberté, French Canadian accordionist, stiltwalker, fire-eater, and founder and Chief Executive Officer of Cirque du Soleil, has just become Canada's first space tourist! Along with professional astronauts Jeff Williams and Maksim Surayev, spaceflight participant Laliberté successfully flew to the International Space Station. He reached orbit on September 30th 2009 aboard Soyuz TMA-16, and returned to Earth on October 11th aboard Soyuz TMA-14.

Laliberté's flight marks the third space flight by a Canadian in the same year, after Robert Thirsk and Julie Payette. He is also the third Québécois in space, and the first accordionist.

Cirque du Soleil, founded in 1984, was a become a worldwide company, with spectacular regional circus shows set to musical backgrounds. Many of the shows involve accordionists.

There is a new "Celebrity Interviews" of Steve Bach, Roland accordionist at "ZAIA" show Cirque du Soleil in Macau online. Also related is a "Celebrity Interviews" in February 2009 of Las Vegas based Cirque du Soleil accordionist Hubert Gall.

Renato Borghetti and Martin Lubenov at Womex, Copenhagen – Denmark

Renato Borghetti and Martin Lubenov
International accordionists Renato Borghetti (Brazil) and Martin Lubenov (Austria/Bulgaria) will both appear at this year’s Womex, the world’s main trade fair for World Music, which this year will take place in at the Bella Center, Copenhagen, Denmark, from October 28th to November 1st.

Renato Borghetti, currently on an extensive tour of Europe, is Brazil’s leading exponent of Chamamé, and his innovative musicianship within this genre has been compared with that of Astor Piazzolla’s influence on Tango.

Martin Lubenov, like Renato Borghetti, has modernized the traditional dance music of his native Bulgaria, and he has been dubbed: “The king of Balkan swing”!

Other performers at Womex using accordions include Lepistö & Lehti (Finland), Boris Malkovsky (Israel), Brigada Retro Mishto (Romania), Cedric Watson & Bijou Creole (USA), Parno Graszt (Hungary), Socalled (Canada), and Yves Lambert et le Bébert Orchestra (Canada).

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall Memorial Concert - Russia

Yulia Amerikova, Viacheslav Semionov, Alexander SelianovOn Tuesday 6th October at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, a concert was held in memory of the outstanding Russian conductor Nikolai Kalinin, who was the leader of Osipov’s Russian folk orchestra (NA ONIR named after Osipov) from 1979 to 2004.

The concert included two Russian folk instrument orchestras - Volga Russian Folk Orchestra named after Kalinin and NA ONIR named after Osipov – as well as well-known Russia performers and singers.

One of the highlights of the concert was the performance of the unique bayan ensemble performing the famous "Skaz o Tihom Done” from “Don Raphsody” by Viatcheslav Semionov accompanied by the Volga RFO.

The ensemble included the outstanding bayanist and People's Artist of Russia Viatcheslav Semionov and his students, winners of international competitions, Alexander Selivanov, Yuri Medianik, Stanislav Malyshev, Yulia Amerikova, Danil Stadnyuk and Maxim Fedorov. The performance was warmly embraced by the Moscow public.

Oleg Sharov at Glusburn Institute, Yorkshire - UK

Oleg SharovOn Tuesday October 13th 2009 over a hundred people were treated to an exhibition of the highest quality of musicianship at the Glusburn Institute in North Yorkshire.

Oleg Sharov, Senior Professor of Music at the Rimsky Korsakov Conservatory of Music, St Petersburg, was guest artiste at a concert hosted by the Craven Accordion Orchestra. Oleg's repertoire consisted of classic numbers like Bach’s ‘Toccata in D Minor’ and ‘Largo al Factotum’, from the ‘Barber of Seville’, through to jazz standards like ‘Take the A Train’.

He also used the occasion to introduce the audience to newer accordion works. This was complemented by some wonderful arrangements of Russian folk songs. The evening came to a close with an exquisite performance of Astor Piazolla’s ‘Oblivion’. The comments of accordionists and non accordionists alike were unanimous in their enjoyment of the evening.

Celebrity Interview of Steve Bach - Macau

Steve BachMarco Cinaglia, product manager of Roland Europe, participated at the introduction of the new V-Accordion FR-7X during the Coupe Mondiale held in New Zealand in August 2009.

Taking advantage of the return trip, Marco has made a stop in Macau where he met the famous musician Steve Bach and where he attended the show "ZAIA" Cirque du Soleil.

Marco Cinaglia made a "Celebrity Interviews" with Steve Bach which is now published.

Advanced Level Master Class with Massimiliano Pitocco and Adriano Ranieri, Torrice (FR) - Italy

In the town of Torrice in the province of Frosinone the 2nd graduate seminar was held by Massimiliano Pitocco (performer and teacher at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome) and Adriano Ranieri (performer and teacher at the Conservatory "L. Refice" of Frosinone). The success of last year’s event led to an increase of members so that this year 32 students participated.

Former participants Angelo Miele and Domenico D'Annunzio have become professional artistes, both having benefited from the high level of this course. Other course participants include Armando Rizzo and Eleonora Tomassetti.

The course is designed not only to improve the technical-instrumental and musical challenges of each student, but to seek perfection in a close contact between students. For a week the students have shared moments of socialization, cooperation, study, relaxation, comparison, and not least intense moments of conviviality in an environment reserved for them.

Massimiliano Pitocco commented: “We'd like to make it a meeting point for many accordionists from around the world, our intent, in fact, is always to improve and the 2010 Edition will be longer with foreign guest lecturers…for greater and wider experience”. Next year’s event will probably be between August and September.

Alexander Poeluev Concert Successes – USA

From 20 to 28 September, Alexander Poeluev toured in the United States of America. He participated in the Lifetime Achievement Award to Faithe Deffner organized by the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) in New York. There, Alexander performed Divertimento composed by famous Russian composer, performer and teacher, Viatcheslav Semionov. This work first published in 2008 was dedicated to Faithe Deffner.

Alexander Poeluev also played solo concerts in the cities of Southport, New Haven, Fairfield and Cheshire. These concerts were organized by the American Accordionists 'Association and the Connecticut Accordionists' Association and were greatly enjoyed with a number of standing ovations. Additionally, 2 school concerts were organised to promote accordion in the schools.

Igor Zobin’s Debut at the ‘Biennale Musica’, Venice - Italy

Young accordionist Igor Zobin performed with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI Torino during the International Festival of Contemporary Music ‘Music Biennial 2009’, on September 28th. The historic Venetian world-class festival which has hosted in the past the greatest musicians of the 20th Century, premiered ‘Lieder von der Liebe zur Erde’, by the great contemporary composer Fabio Nieder.

The piece, written for solo soprano and two orchestras, was enriched by the presence of the accordion, its sound merging with the large orchestra consisting of a hundred instruments.

The concert was performed in honour of the Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag, one of the most important music personalities of recent times, who was awarded with the Golden Lion for Career Achievement.

There was a standing ovation for Zoltan Pesko, one of the most important conductors of the 20th Century, who has to his credit a major implementation of premières of the last hundred years.

Ensemble Terem Quartet Concert – Russia

Terem QuartetThe ensemble Terem Quartet performed in Rostov-on-Don on Sunday October 11th. The concert was held in the Great Hall of the Philharmonic Society and there gathered many amateur and professional musicians.

The Terem Quartet performed their own compositions on the themes of JS Bach and PI Tchaikovsky, music from famous movies, and tangos by Astor Piazzola. The concert ended with standing ovations.

Liu Shanshan "Accordion & Bandoneon & Piano" Concert - China

The 'Liu Shanshan Accordion and Bandoneon and Piano Concert’ on September 30th took place at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music He Luting Concert Hall.

This concert, supported by the Shanghai Conservatory, had well-known teachers Li Cong, Zhang Guo-Ping, Xu David, Wang Cong Yu, Zhang Yan, and the other teachers attending.

The performance, in various forms, including solo, chamber music, duo, also used multimedia art and lighting to bring an additional visual experience to the audience.

Liu Shanshan began learning the accordion at 5 years, studied at the Sichuan Academy of Music Piano with Professor Wu Shouzhi, and Professor Zhang Xiaobo. In 2004 Liu Shanshan went to Hanover, University of Music and Drama, under the tutelage of Elspeth Moser. She is now completing her Masters Degree.

Liu Shanshan showed impressive artistic skill and her own elegant and beautiful style of music that was enjoyed very much by the audience.

Clementina Viazzani is Born - UK

Romano ViazzaniRomano Viazzani and Jan Viazzani are pleased to announce the birth of Clementina Caterina Viazzani. Born today 15th October 2009 at 9.42am at home and weighing 3.760kg (8lbs 5oz).

She's a very pretty little girl. All went really well. Mum is doing great, Dad and Giacomo are feeling very outnumbered now!

Benefit Concert ‘Tanti Anni Prima’, Gleisdorf – Austria

Ars Harmoniae
On October 17th, 7.30,pm the anniversary concert ‘35 years Accordion Orchestra’ will take place in the School of Music Gleisdorf - a benefit concert in aid of ‘Styrians help Styrians’. This concert with the title ‘Tanti Anni Prima’ (“faces many years”) with highlights from the classical, jazz and tango world presented by the ensemble ‘Ars Harmoniae’ – a combination of music, singing, dancing and acting.

The soloists are: Bernd Kohlhofer – accordion, Stefan Matl – accordion, Sigrid Präsent – violin, Helmut Kossegg – piano, Erika Buglyó – flute, Petra Pirkwieser – oboe, Mariann Weninger –vocals, and the organiser is Rudolf Plank.

After the concert, there will be a party, and other guest musicians and singers, together with the ensemble ‘Ars Harmoniae’, will complete the evening with Styrian wine and snacks to finish off what will be a wonderful musical evening. All proceeds are in for ‘Styrians help Styrians’. All artistes are performing free of charge.

Festival to Honor 60th Anniversary of Skliarov – Russia

Alexander SkliarovA Festival in honor of the 60-year anniversary of Russia's outstanding accordionist Alexander Skliarov takes place from October 20 to 22 in the city of Kursk.

The artists will take part in this event include such talented musicians as Alexander Skliarov, Viacheslav Semionov, Yuri Shishkin, Alexander Selivanov, Yulia Amerikova, Edward Akhanov, Vladimir Murza, Eugene Derbenko, Bayan quintet "Russian timbre”, Orel trio, Lipetskoe trio.

The festival was organized by the Arts Department of the Kursk region and a member of the CIA and CMA Creative School "Master-class".

Arizona Accordion Festival, Phoenix – USA

The Arizona Accordion Festival is a fun and music-filled annual event, held on October 17th, 12 noon, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 19644 N. 7th Ave, Phoenix.

It is held in combination with an Oktoberfest and features many of the Arizona Accordion Club members. Carnival games, rides, food and a beer garden provide fun for the entire family!

Performers at this year's festival include Los Valley Boys and Joey Avila, the Hurricajuns, the Arizona Accordion Ensemble, and many members of the Arizona Accordion Club.

Accordion Appointements with Mirjana Petercol – Germany

Mirjana PetercolThe Hessische Rundfunk broadcasts on October 20th, 8pm in the program ‘Music Event’ concert ‘Composers and their Works’. This was recorded at 15.03.2009 as a ‘New Music’ concert in Kassel, Germany. There will be works by Gubaidulina, Dinescu, amongst other works, performed on accordion by Mirjana Petercol.

On October 24th the Hessisches Staatstheater, Wiesbaden, presents the operetta ‘Im Weissen Rössl’ (‘The White Horse Inn’) by Ralph Benatzky, featuring Mirjana Petercol on accordion. Further dates include: November 29th, December 30th, January 3rd and 15th 2010.

Jack Emblow in ‘Spirit of Django’ Concert, London - UK

Jack Emblow and Martin TaylorAccordionist Jack Emblow will be performing in the ensemble ‘Spirit of Django’, led by jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, in a special concert on October 25th, 7.30pm, at London's Royal Albert Hall. The event will mark the announcement of the first Spirit of Django CD and tour in 14 years, which will take place in Spring 2010.

The concert will also feature Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, Jan Akkerman, Melanie C, Paul Carrack, Kiki Dee, Chris Difford, Georgie Fame, Robin Gibb, Mark King and Mike Lindup (Level 42), Mick Hucknall, plus some special guests.

‘Spirit of Django’ was formed in 1994 with the aim to pay homage and create a new contemporary sound inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Jack Emblow (born 1930) has played with ‘Spirit of Django’ since 1994, and is considered by his peers to be Britain’s leading jazz accordionist. He is also a prolific session musician, performing on the soundtracks of countless films, TV programmes, and the recordings of numerous artistes, including Elton John, Grace Jones, Donovan, The Strawbs, Peter Sarstedt, and the Beatles.
