$8,000 Cash Prizes, Carmen Carrozza Memorial Competition, 2017 - USAby Harley Jones |
The American Accordionists' Association (AAA) announces USD$8,000 in cash prizes for the 2017 Carmen Carrozza Memorial Award Competition to be held July 12-16 at the 2017 AAA Annual Festival. The competition venue will be: The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village in New Jersey, Princeton, NJ 08540. To further popularize the AAA Commisioned repertoire, the Carmen Carrozza Scholarship Committee is offering $8,000 in cash prizes to the winners of this competition open to all acoustic accordionists. The Open Division and the Junior Division of this competition require accordionists to choose one of the listed Commissioned pieces , one of the Standard Repertoire pieces (selections to be announced on the AAA website) and one or more pieces of entertainment value - all to be performed in a single program, to demonstrate well rounded musicianship. For full rules and performance requirements, please contact the AAA office. International contestants requiring invitations for Visas are encouraged to request this information before 1st March. |

Two videos above from the 2016 Le Grand Soufflet. Le Grand Soufflet 2016 is an accordion festival that takes place at Village Thabor and other venues in Rennes, Brittany, from October 6th to 15th. This colourful annual festival celebrates the accordion, both for its traditional music connections and for its versatility in a modern musical context. Accordionists from other countries participate, and the music played can include arty rock, jazz, electronic or cabaret artists. The famous German accordionist Andreas Nebl was on a concert tour in Japan with his wife, the former harmonica world champion Naoko Nebl (born Takeuchi). With a new program of works by Bach, Handel and Japanese music, they were able to inspire their Japanese audience. There were more than 800 audience at the Klassikkonzert in Kanagawa alone. The pianist Shigeko Ishii was also a chamber music partner of the two. Next year, Andreas and Naoko Nebl will be performing at the "World Harmonica Festival" in Trossingen being held, 31st October to 5th November 2017. |
20th Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships, Carrickfergus – UKby Rob Howard |
The 20th Northern Ireland Open Accordion Championships are being held in the Loughshore Hotel, Carrickfergus, on Saturday February 25th 2017 running from 9am until 5pm, with the Prize Presentation taking place that night in the hotel at a Gala Dance. Pictures: Above Clyde Johnston & orchestra, left Clyde Johnston. The hotel has special rates for this weekend and anyone wishing to stay over should book early as it was fully booked last year. The 19th Championships held earlier this year attracted a record 245 entries and in 2017, competitors from England, Scotland, and the Irish Republic, as well as a strong local entry are expected. Competitions cater for all types of accordion music with Solo, Duet, Group, Orchestral and Marching Band Sections suitable for all ages and grades with classical and continental to traditional styles. The 20th event promises to be a musical feast with three halls in use all day. The Championships are run under the rules of the National Accordion Organisation of the United Kingdom (NAO) and are a qualifying event for the 2017 UK Championships being held in Liverpool, 21-23 April. Any UK resident who competes in an NAO Section at these competitions will have qualified to compete in the relevant section of the NAO UK Championships. In addition, there is a number of additional competition sections, details of which can be obtained from the organiser Clyde Johnston. The closing date for entries is December 31st 2016. Video above: 2016 winner Mohsen Amini. The BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2017 Finalists have been announced. These are Charlie Stewart - fiddle (Perthshire), Dougie McCance - bagpipes (Glasgow), Ella Munro - Scots song (Skye), Grant McFarlane - accordion (Paisley), Iona Fyfe - Scots song, (Huntly), and Kim Carnie - Gaelic song (Oban). Thirteen musicians arrived in Coulter, South Lanarkshire, on October 8th to compete to get to the final of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award. They all performed for 10 minutes each with accompanists Mhairi Hall (piano) and Michael Bryan (guitar). There were two accordionists involved, Grant McFarlane and Craig Paton. It was an amazing concert and all the musicians performed brilliantly. The judges (David Francis, Stuart Cassells, Rona Wilkie, Scott Gardiner, Maeve Mackinnon and Iain MacInnes) chose 6 musicians to go through to the finals. The all-female band Cherish the Ladies, who specialize in Irish traditional music, perform in concert on Saturday October 15th, 7pm, at the Crescent Elk Auditorium, Crescent City, California. "It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn't enjoy what they do", says the Boston Globe speaking of Cherish the Ladies, the long-running, Grammy-nominated, Irish-American super group that formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene and has since toured the world, played the White House and the Olympics, recorded 16 outstanding albums including ‘“An Irish Homecoming’, a live recording of their Emmy winning TV special that aired across America and Ireland. Accordionist Zoltan Orosz and percussionist Kornel Horvath, both from Hungary, perform in concert together on Sunday October 16th, 6.30pm, at the Centro Cultural Iortia, Altsasu (Alsasua), Navarre, in northern Spain. Zoltan Orosz studied the accordion and the organ at the Bela Bartok Conservatory in Budapest, and later at the Franz Liszt College, Budapest. On Sunday October 16th, 2.30pm, the popular accordionist Erika, known as ‘The Princess of the Accordion’ and her band, play for dancing at Salles Prevoto, Isles-Sur-Suippe, 51110 Bazancourt, Marne, north-eastern France. Erika Honorez is from Tilly, a village close to Villers La Ville in Belgium. She comes from a musical family, and received her first accordion at the age of 5 years. Erika's teacher was Mr Franz Lebrun from the Brussels Conservatory, and she studied the theory of music and classical music, then specialized in the musette genre. Since 1981 Erika has been performing, composing, and recording. She has appeared on radio and TV in Belgium and France. Erika has recorded many CDs and DVDs, which are available through her website. Using all the advantages of the accordion in their creations, the Motion Trio continually explore the new possibilities of this instrument, changing the way that it is perceived. On Saturday October 22nd, 5pm, the trio Flukt perform a programme of folk tunes at Trysil Treff 2016, Park Inn, Trysil Mountain Resort. This concert is part of a weekend of folk music. Flukt are Øivind Farmen – accordion, Sturla Eide - violin, and Håvard Sterten – percussion. Øivind Farmen, winner of many high level competitions including Klingenthal (1993) and the CMA Trophee Mondiale (in Faro Portugal, 1996), is one of Norway’s finest and most accomplished accordionists.
