World Accordion Orchestra XI, 18 August, Shenzhen - Chinaby Harley Jones |
The Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) announces the 11th Anniversary edition of the magnificent World Accordion Orchestra which will be held as part of the 72nd Coupe Mondiale Festival in Shenzhen, China from 12-18 August, 2019. Conductors are Joan C. Sommers (USA) and Chen Weiliang (China). The World Accordion Orchestra XI will perform three pieces - Triumphal March from Aida by G. Verdi - Carefree! The Yi People, Trad. Chinese Folk Songs - Long live the Motherland! by Liu Chi and Qin Yongcheng with orchestra members comprising accordionists from around the globe, including many of the CIA Delegates, Jury and Contestants as well as our from our host nation of China. The World Accordion Orchestra XI performance will be held on Sunday, August 18th, 2019. This is a unique opportunity for accordionists to apply to play in a large international orchestra at the 2019 Coupe Mondiale and enjoy the experience of playing under the under the baton of renowned conductors Joan C. Piazzolla-Studio Ensemble Performance in Germany and Russiaby Dr Herbert Scheibenreif Manager of Friedrich Lips Productions |
On May 26th, the concert of the well known Piazzolla-Studio Ensemble entitled “Not only Tango ...” took place in the German Museum of Munich (picture above). The artistic director was Friedrich Lips, the people's artist of Russia and winner of the All-Russian competition “The Best Names of the Germans of Russia” 2016 in the field of art. The concert truly adorned the IV Cultural and Business Forum "Made by the Germans from Russia." Their program featured works not only by Astor Piazzolla, but also by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Johannes Brahms and other composers. Friedrich Lips created the instrumental ensemble “Piazzolla-Studio” whose debut concert took place in September 1993 on the stage of the Small Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory P.I. Tchaikovsky. Since then the group has toured Russia, Japan, Austria, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia and Estonia. The concert "Not Only Tango ..." was a presentation of the musical direction of the Creative Association of Russian Germans. Further performances took place in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Concert Hall on June 2nd and at the 62nd All-Russian Glinka-Music Festival held in Smolensk on June 3rd (picture above left). Two World Accordion Day (WAD) reports have been added to the WAD event report which includes events in 14 countries and 16 videos, many pictures and posters at: World Accordion Day Ferran Martínez reports that at the University of Cervera in Catalonia, Spain on the 4th May, is celebrated World Accordion Cervera, a project promoted by the Catalan Association of Accordion, which included more than 200 accordionists from around Catalonia, Basque Country, Aragon and Andorra. From Italy, Glauco Ceccarelli reports: A few days ago I registered a new website, for the World Accordion Day, "Fisarmonica - Abramo Ceccarelli e la sua musica" [Accordion - Abramo Ceccarelli and his music]. “The site aims to make known the artistic and human figure of Abramo Ceccarelli (my father), a very valid Italian accordionist and composer, whose musical activity has spanned almost the entire twentieth century. The site also aims to recover and spread the wide musical production of Abramo Ceccarelli, consisting of over 200 original compositions. 2019 Australian International Accordion Championships and Festival - Australiaby Lionel Reekie |
Sydney, Australia played host to a real variety of accordion music with the Australian Accordion Teachers Association (AATA) annual Championships and Festival, held on 8th and 9th June, President Tania Lukic-Marx (picture above left). Each year this event attracts international competitors and guest performers and this year was no exception with participants from Poland, China, New Zealand, Slovenia together with local and out of state Australian accordionists. Competitions for solo and duet categories gave an opportunity for players of all levels and ages to showcase their skills. The youngest competitor (picture above right) was just four years of age, and for several categories it was some of the performer’s first time on stage. The 20 years and Under Junior Virtuoso was the highest International category, with the title being won by Jianan Wang and Zelda Mormul (Australia) won both the 12 years and 15 years and under International classes. The Festival also featured a masterclass with internationally known Primoz Parovel (Slovenia) demonstrating why he is so much in demand as an international adjudicator and teacher. Primoz has recently released a CD recording of Scarlatti works on free bass accordion available through Sony Music. Music Junction (Melbourne) also exhibited a number of accordions and accordion accessories. Guest performances throughout the weekend culminated in the Gala Prizewinners concert. Held in Club Marconi’s impressive auditorium, artists included the ever-popular Sydney Balalaika Orchestra, Southern Cross Accordion Ensemble, (recently returned from the DHV World Music Festival in Innsbruck), Gennady Savkov (Lithuania/Russia), Eduard Bronson and Lionel Reekie (New Zealand). Selected prizewinners also played before a memorable performance from Poland’s “The Modern Trio” concluded the concert. Marzena Bernatowicz (conductor, recitation, singing), Elwira Sliwkiewicz-Cisak (accordion) and Jakub Niedoborek (guitar) presented an interesting program that featured everything from Piazzolla’s “Libertango” through to the world premiere of a composition specially written for them by Ukrainian, Volodymir Runchak entitled "I had see the Lord ...". AATA president, Tatjana Marx closed the event with the presentation of certificates to the Trio and Primoz Parovel, and extended an invitation to accordionists all over the world to attend next years’ Festival which will be held in August 2020. Wow Folk Festival Castelfidardo - Italyby Harley Jones |
The 3rd Wow Folk Festival was held in Castelfidardo from May 24th to 26th. The three-day event was described as a burst of energy that comes back to envelope the city with a diverse program of free music and events under the auspices of the PIF International Accordion Award. Entertainers included the Ayom Quintet, a multicultural union of two projects: the energy of the Forró Miór - Alberto Becucci (accordion), Pedro Bastos (guitars), Timoteo Grignani (percussion) and Walter Martins (triangle and percussion) plus the Afro-Brazilian singer Jabu Morales. Their music included Brazilian sounds with African rhythms and Mediterranean melodic influence. The following day was dedicated to Argentine music in conjunction with the national holiday “El dia della patria”. Tango group Orquesta Tipica Juan D’Arienzo (picture below) provided entertainment at this event which was also broadcast in Argentina. |
17th International Vivat, Bayan Competition - Russiaby Arseniy Strokovskiy |
The 17th International Vivat, Bayan Competition was held in Samara, Russia from May 13th to 17th. This year's qualifying rounds were organized in five Russian regions, and the competition in Samara included over 200 participants. Next year organizers plan to expand the geography of the competition to increase the number of qualifying rounds and hold them in eight federal districts. "Vivat, Bayan!" has grown from a regional competition and festival to an international one, with an increasing number of participants, cities and countries that they represent, as well as the level of performance, said the competition's artistic director, Sergei Voytenko (picture above). "We bring new trends and details to the organization every year, so the project is not standing still, and we are ready to go to the regions." Competition Director, Alexey Khromov noted the high level of performance from this year’s participants as 6 winners were awarded certificates of recommendation to represent Russia in the "World Cup" or "World Trophy" competitions. Slow Session Tunes Book Released by Karen Tweed - UKby Christine Johnstone |
Accordionist Karen Tweed has just released her new book entitled “Slow Session Tunes Book” which comes with a free CD. Karen performs the tunes in the book at The Reel, Kirkwall, Orkney on alternate Mondays to help enable any inexperienced musicians to join in with sessions. The CD contains each tune played slowly once. Tunes are notated in the book which includes background notes, simple accompaniment chords for accordion, piano or guitar plus a pull out page containing all the guitar chord tabs. Tunes are from Orkney, Ireland, England, Scotland and Scandinavia. The book is compiled by Karen Tweed and edited by Karen and Hazel Wrigley. The artwork is also completed by Karen. Black Pencil and Via Nova Ensembles Performance - Germanyby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |
The Black Pencil ensemble (which includes accordionist Marko Kassl) joined with the Ensemble Via Nova to present a concert at the Kunsthalle in Erfurt, Germany on May 31st. Both ensembles presented their own repertoire as well as the premiere of a joint work by Moritz Eggerts entitled "Hierarchy ". Black Pencil also played two other world premieres - "Baldwin Close Ups " by Martijn Paddings and "Colour Consort” by Klas Torstenssons. The ensemble’s next concerts will be at the Musiktheatre im Revier, Kennedyplatz, D-45881 Gelsenkirchen on June 16th and 21st. Their program is entitled “A Midsummer Night's Dream”. Dan Newton's Café Accordion Orchestra (CAO) will entertain at Crooners in Minneapolis on June 18th at 7.30pm. The show is entitled “Midnight in Paris” and will feature music from Edith Piaf, Django Reinhardt, Serge Gainsbourg, Sidney Bechet and other Parisian stars. Over 3 million visitors are expected to attend the 36th Danube Island Festival which will be held from June 21st to 23rd in Vienna Austria. The event will include 1,500 artists on 13 stages providing 600 hours of music throughout the festival with a variety of genres such as rock, pop, alternative, indie, punk, hip hop, oldies, electro, German-language pop, folk music, cabaret and readings. There will also be a cabaret, sport and children's programs, plus a “Rock the Island Contest” which will offer rising stars and new talents the opportunity to perform. This is a great opportunity for accordionists to entertain the crowd. Entertainment will be provided by The Tiger Lillies (which includes Martyn Jaques on accordion - picture left) along with international stars and Austrian greats who will set the mood at one of Europe's largest open-air events. A Digital Accordion Workshop with Richard Noel will be held at Petosa Accordions, Lynnwood, WA 98036 on Tuesday afternoon June 18th. The workshop will cover “The Amazing Versatility of the Bugari and Roland Digital Accordions”. Participants will receive tuition and advice on sets and user programs, the selection of sounds, and creating your own user programs. The more you understand about the instrument the more you can take advantage of its incredible capabilities. The Algarve Accordion Association will hold their International Accordion Competition on July 5th and 6th in Olhos de Água, Albufeira, Algarve. The event will include solo, duo, trio, quartet, orchestra and chamber music categories which will be open to international candidates in a variety of age groups. First prize winners will receive a special trophy and all candidates will receive diplomas and medals. During the event Portuguese selections will be made for the CMA 69th World Accordion Trophy Loulé 2019. The event will begin with an opening ceremony on July 5th at the Church of Centro Paroquial Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Olhos de Água with entertainment by the Algarve Accordion Orchestra and Gonçalo Pescada. The competition will begin on July 6th at Edifício Olhos de Água finishing with a winners ceremony and concert at the Church of Centro Paroquial Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Olhos de Água. The "Victor Derenboim" Accordion Orchestra will travel from Israel to perform a free concert at the Jewish Museum of Cyprus Seafront Stage in Larnaca on July 8th at 8pm. Israeli singer, Mike Brant will join the orchestra for this performance. Brant was born in Cyprus and his parents were holocaust survivors. He went on to become an international singing sensation with hits such as "Qui saura" (Who Knows).
