Joe Morelli Passes Away - Canadaby Rob Howard |
 Leading Canadian accordion teacher, performer, conductor, composer, arranger, Joe Morelli died on March 4th. Joe Morelli (1929-2009) was taught by Alf Carson, and became the first Canadian accordionist to play with a symphony orchestra.In 1997 Joe Morelli wrote ‘Target: Focus’, a unique and popular book that not only dealt with the practical matters of accordion playing, but also discussed at length the philosophy and psychology of music making. In recent years Joe Morelli taught regularly at accordion camps such as the annual event in Oregon, USA, where his ability to take any random assortment of accordionists and quickly turn them into an ensemble was legendary. He was highly regarded by all who knew him. |
‘Accordions International 2009’, Blackpool – UKby Rob Howard |
 This year’s ‘Accordions International 2009’, organised by Heather Smith, takes place from May 8th to 12th at Pontins, Lytham St Annes, Blackpool, Lancashire. This year’s guest artistes include Pino di Modugno - Italy, Alexander Dmitriev and Vitali Dmitriev - Russia, Giancarlo Caporilli - Italy, David Vernon - Scotland, Romano Viazzani, Stefan Andrusyschyn & Denise Leigh (soprano), Bert Santilly and Harry Hussey. David Vernon aus Edinburgh, hat sich erst kürzlich auf die Gästeliste eingetragen - seinem Repertoire findet man Musik aus aller Welt, von Klezmer bis zum Balkan und argentinischen Tangos. The festival will also feature the release of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion, Volume 4’. This is the 4th and latest in Rob Howard’s popular series of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion’ books. There are workshops, master classes, concerts, dancing, plus after hours jam sessions. The trade show to date includes Geoff Holter Accordions, The Accordion Shop, Accordions of London, and Rob Howard Publications. This accordion festival shares the Pontins site with an organ/keyboard festival, which has its own large trade show open to all. Accordion Revolution 2009, Greci (AV) - Italyby Rob Howard |
 Accordion Revolution 2009 takes place from March 12th to 15th in Greci (AV) featuring a multitude of events that includes workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations of the Roland Virtual Accordion, and an International Competition. The gala evening concerts present eminent international accordionists such as Renzo Ruggieri, Ludovic Beier, Sergio Scappini, and Claudio Azzaro. Ensemble Fandango at “Another Space” Festival - Russiaby Alexander Poeluev |
 From 16 to 18 March 2009, the Moscow Philharmonic Society will host the first festival titled “Another Space” This festival is created to promote new music, supporting young artists and performers, promoting contemporary art. The festival will be attended by both known and young artists of modern academic music in Russia. 18 March at 20.00 at the Chamber Hall of the Moscow Philharmonic, the ensemble Fandango will be performing. The ensemble was formed in 2005 at the Russian Academy of Music (Gnesin) by undergraduate and postgraduate students. Initiator of the quintet was Prof. Viatcheslav Semionov. The accordionist is the winner of national and international competitions Maxim Fedorov (accordion), Konstantine Kaznacheev (violin), Artur Adamyan (violin), Artem Valentinov (viola), Peter Karetnikov (cello). Video Fandango In the festival program Fandango will make the premiere performance of a new work “Together”, which is five pieces for violin and accordion by the Ukrainian composer Alexander Schetinskay. Also being performed is “Bewegungen” by T. Lundquist for accordion and string quartet, as well as the music of Wolfgang Rihm, Andrey Zelensky and Sergey Berinsky. |

Premiere of Concerto Armonico, Monterrey - Méxicoby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |
 Last week concert accordionist José Valadez performed the ‘Concerto Armonico’, by Roberto Caberlotto. It was the premiere in Central America. The concert was celebrated at the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey, México.The Concerto is for Accordion, guitar and string ensemble. The other 2 are also online at www.youtube.com Accompanied by the orchestra, José Valadez also performed ‘Ojos Negros (Dark Eyes)’ and ‘Ciribiribin’. The Akkordeon Viel - Harmony Salzburg plays tunes from various periods and genres, but all have to do with dance. Under the leadership of Robert Ebner, the accordion orchestra will be transformed into a saloon orchestra, performing works by Boccherini and Dvorak, from ABBA to Frank Sinatra.  Devotchka perform on March 18th, 8pm, at People's Court, 216 Court Ave, Des Moines, CA. Devotchka is a Denver-based quartet: Nick Urata - vocals/guitar, Tom Hagerman - accordion/violin (picture left), Jeanie Schroder - upright bass/tuba, and Shawn King - drums/trumpet. Sometimes billed as Eastern European indie rock, the band blends gypsy, folk, mariachi, and rock influences effortlessly. No instrument is off limits, either: violin, sousaphone, trumpet, double bass, theramin, bouzouki, and, of course, the accordion (played by Tom Hagerman) all take turns on center stage. Meanwhile, frontman Nick Urata’s haunting voice soars above it all. |
