‘Mundial de Acordeon’, Valledupar - Colombia

The annual ‘Mundial De Acordeon’ in Valledupar, Colombia, takes place on June 25th and 26th. The accordion contests, for folk solo and ensemble players, are the centre piece of the festival. The closing date for entries is April 25th.

The city of Valledupar is the cultural capital of Vallenato folk music, which is 450 years old. Before the accordion arrived in the 19th Century, this music used to be played on the flute, but nowadays it is mainly played on the diatonic button accordion, often with rhythm accompaniment.

Hundreds of groups and accordionists are expected to entertain at this festival, which is one of the most important in festivals in Colombia.

NAO North Central Area Festival - UK

NAO UK Championships banner
Graham laurie,(NAO Chairperson), Djordje Gajic, Karloyn Broadhead(Adjudicators) with Alexander and Roseanna Bodell.jpgThe NAO North Central Area Festival, a qualifier for the NAO UK Championships in Blackpool (24th - 26th April) was held on 7th February in Saltaire West Yorkshire. The venue with 4 competitive halls and a trade area proved to be a great success – with over 250 entries in accordion classes.

Highest solo mark of the day (98/100) was awarded by jury member Djordje Gajic to Alexander Bodell. There were also excellent performances from the Craven Accordion Orchestra and Thom Hardaker who is currently a student of Oleg Sharov in St Petersburg, Russia.

It was rewarding to see the new initiative in a number of local schools in Yorkshire has led to many young accordionists competing in introductory categories at an accordion festival, for the first time.

Very popular also was the Ceilidh held in the evening featuring Robert Thorn and his band. The next regional NAO Area Festivals are to be in Renfrewshire, Scotland on 21st February and South East Thames the following day.

Results of all the regional festivals held so far may be found at NAO website.
