Photo, Left to Right: Martynas Levickis, Rafal Luc, Conductor Valery Gergiev, Ksenija Sidorova, Amadej Herzog and Trang Nguyen

On October 14/15th 2009, during a visit to the UK, the Chorus of the famous Mariinsky Theatre gave two splendid performances of Prokofiev’s ‘Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution’. They performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Prokofiev’s ‘Cantata’ is an extraordinary work of musical theatre and of huge proportions in the musical forces it employs. It uses an extended orchestra and choir, a brass band and an accordion band.

A most interesting historical background to this work and a review of the concerts is online: Cantata Review

From the accordionist’s point of view the work (written in the mid-1930s) is of obvious interest as it is probably one of the first large orchestral and choral works to include an accordion band or significant part for a group of accordions. Further information online at: Cantata Review

11th Viennese Accordion Festival Press Conference – Austria

Organizer Friedl Preisl announced in his speech that old and new elements will combine to make the 11th Viennese Accordion Festival a success – even after the extraordinary jubilee of last year.

A main stream is dedicated to ‘A tribute to Lars Hollmer’ to remember the Swedish musician and founding member of the ‘Accordion Tribe’, who passed away in 2008. Lars Hollmer´s colleagues Bratko Bibic, Maria Kalaniemi, Guy Klucevsek and Otto Lechner will arrange special concert evenings in his memory.

For the very first time in the history of the Viennese Festival, the ‘GÜRTEL LATE NIGHT TOUR’ offers concerts in the heart of the new music mile, beginning punctually at 11pm.

Other features include the duo Renzo Ruggieri and Mauro De Federicis (Italy) and Martin Lubenov and Vladimir Karparov (Bulgaria).

Other projects will be ‘Silent Movie Matinee’ - accordionists performing live to silent movie classics - and ‘Magic Afternoon’ for children of all ages, which are already highly appreciated by their numerous and enthusiastic public audiences on Sundays.

Finally Sasha Shevchenko (accordion) and Maciej Golebiowski (clarinet), very well-known as the duo ‘Klezmer reloaded’, performed for the entertainment part of the press conference.

‘Harry Hussey meets Ken Astin’, Stockport – UK

Ken Astin and Harry Hussey
Johnny ColecloughStockport Accordion Club’s concert on February 10th opened with Rob Howard, the show MC, playing ‘The Great Escape’/’The Longest Day’, followed by variations on Rabbie Burns’ ‘A Man’s A Man’, on his Roland FR7. SAC President Johnny Coleclough then took over, performing an extended spot on his customised Cordovox. His numbers included ‘Under Paris Skies’, ‘The Dark Island’, and a Gershwin medley.

The guest artistes, Harry Hussey and Ken Astin, performed two great sets. Some of their music was jazz flavoured, and everything had a spontaneity that was most appealing to the audience. Their first half programme included ‘Moonlight in Vermont’, ‘Rosetta’, ‘What are doing the rest of your life?’, ‘Lara’s Theme’ (Harry solo), Moonlight Serenade’/String of Pearls’ (Harry solo), ‘I’m old fashioned’, an untitled valse musette (learned from YouTube!), ‘Tritsch Tratsch Polka (Ken solo), and ‘How High the Moon’.

Johnny Coleclough opened the second half with ‘The Shadow of Your Smile’, after which Harry Hussey returned to play some requests, which included ‘Carte Postale’, ‘Petite Fleur’, and ‘The Petite Waltz’. Ken Astin then went on stage, and the duo performed ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, ‘The Nearness of You’, ‘The History of Love’ (played as a tango), ‘Fine and Dandy’, ‘Wheels’, ‘Patricia’, and ‘Deep Purple’. Their encore, to conclude a most entertaining evening, was ‘Tangerine’.

Ken Astin (Vignoni ‘Compact’) and Harry Hussey (Borsini ‘Superstar’) – both 5 voice instruments - have just completed the recording of a new CD, ‘Just Friends’, done acoustically and with no MIDI, unlike their previous CD, ‘Our Kind of Music’.

Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, Werner Weibert Solo Accordion! – Austria

Franz Schmidt Chamber Orchestra
Werner WeibertDuring the New Year’s concert in Perchtoldsdorf, a suburb of Vienna, on January 14th a memorable concert performance took place. For the first time in this venue the ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, by George Gershwin, was played with an accordion in the solo part.

The soloist was Werner Weibert, who has played the Rhapsody since his youth, and since 1975 with the famous Viennese Accordion Chamber Ensemble during their tours round the world, including New York’s Carnegie Hall!

Professor Adolf Winkler, the founder and conductor of the Franz Schmidt Chamber Orchestra, listened to one of the performances and invited Werner Weibert to play this multi-faceted and impressive opus with his orchestra – an absolute innovation.

The concert was a great success and the full auditorium acclaimed the performance very well. The arrangement was by Professor Winkler and Werner Weibert, and follows the original score.
