Harmonica Championships and World Cup / Inzell - Germany/Austriaby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |

  The national and international harmonica champion / world championships were held in the newly built MAX AICHER ARENA in Inzell, Germany from 2-5. June 2011 and were organized by the team of HVÖ under the direction of Werner Weibert.A total of 176 participants took part. 24 participants in 3 categories (juniors 14-20 years, world champion class 21-31 years, senior category more than 32) from Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Germany. At the Austrian competition 118 candidates and at the Bavarian competition 34 candidates took part. During the evening performances the absolute highlight was the world famous HERBERT Pixner-TRIO being award with several standing ovations for their magnificent performance just as well as the local artists from small kids to adults with dancers and artistic participation of the Mayor Martin Hobmaier and Vice Mayor Hans Egger. The former 4 Harmonica Champions (photo above from left: Robert Goter, Michael Rettig, Herman Huber und Denis Novato) led an enthusiastic audience jump up from their seats Exhibitors HDS Music, Beltuna, Stoaberg, Haglmo and Puschtra harmonicas and offered their latest models and innovations to the public. At the evening gala awards ceremony, the artist Rene Kogler was crowned harmonica world champion for the next 2 years. During the final concert Mag Johann Murg was honored by the HVÖ awarded for his professional expertise and contribution to the Styrian harmonica. During this occasion Prof. Murg handed over his office duty to BA Gottfried Hubmann. The 2013 event is planned in Mayrhofen / Zillertal from 30 May to 2 June.  The 40th Anniversary was a weekend full of excellent music and competitions. South Pacific Daily Reports including results and photographs are online. A Highlight was an amazing concert of concert music and entertainment music by 5 times World Accordion Champion Grayson Masefield (picture left) on Saturday afternoon with extended standing ovations. The competitions before that and on Sunday morning were exciting with the South Pacific Solo Championships living up to its promise of being a close competition. Three fine competitors performed with the results being Campbell Thwaites (picture left, middle) 1st one mark ahead of 2010 Champion Edward Giffney (picture left lower) with Bor-Kuan Song 3rd. A large contingent from AATA Sydney participated in the event and had a most successful competitions, sure to be good preparation for the AATA Competitions the next weekend. The Finale Concert featuring competition winners and a number of other fine performances including the 40th Anniversary Accordion Orchestra conducted by Gary Daverne (picture below), Maurice Jones, Lionel Reekie, Kevin Friedrich and the competition winners. The presentation of previous NZ and South Pacific Accordion Solo Champions, Champion Accordion Orchestra conductors and Life Members was a very nice feature to thank them for all they had done for the accordion in NZ. The event finished off with a Farewell Dinner in Honor of John Statham and the 28 years he was NZAA President. Eugene Ettore: 90th Birthday Memorial Website - USAby Rob Howard |
 June 2nd 2011 would have been the 90th birthday of composer and accordionist Eugene Ettore (photo top right, 1921-85), and one of the outstanding luminaries of the American accordion scene in the years post World War Two. In honor of his birthday, USA News Editor Rita Davidson (photo lower right) has updated the dedicated website with photos of Ettore’s many distinguished awards and honors received over the years. All of these prestigious awards are on a wall in the Ettore home in Livingston, New Jersey, where his daughter, Carol, and family still live. Eugene Ettore was closely associated with and an heir to the musical traditions of his fellow Italian-American accordion legends, Pietro Frosini and the Deiro brothers, Pietro and Guido. The CD ‘Ettore Fantasia’, recorded in 1999 by Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, showcases 14 of Ettore’s compositions. It is hoped that all - especially the younger generation of upcoming accordion artists – will learn about him and include his music in their repertoire. Future plans for the website Eugene Ettore include mp3 examples of his compositions as recorded by Rita Davidson and the release of unpublished music on the MusicForAccordion website. | The 5th International Victoria Accordion Festival takes place from July 14th to 17th in Victoria, B.C., Canada. The Festival Director is Aleksandar Milojevic. Last years successful festival has helped attract some excellent concerts, workshops, and entertainment, including an open stage, trade show and for the very first time in Victoria the Accordion Parade. The chief guests this year are famous jazz accordionist Frank Marocco and one of North America''s foremost classical accordionists, Jelena Milojevic. Also appearing will be Bonnie Birch and her trio from Seattle, USA. This year, for the first time, the festival includes a competition for accordion orchestras! The Competition, Trade Show, Workshops, Open Stage and the Dance Night will be held at the Comfort Hotel & Conference Centre in Victoria.  The Santa Maria Accordion Band recently performed at short notice in a public concert in the town of Zabbar, as part of ‘Zabbar Day 2011’.The band played several popular tunes to an audience that included some renowned cultural personalities, such as leading poets, artists, singers, politicians, mayors and councilors, and several personalities in the cultural circle. The event was broadcast on the Zabbar radio channel, and was presented by a leading Maltese TV and radio personality, Charles Abela Mizzi, during which he interviewed our band Director Marthese Busuttil Cassar about our unique accordion band in Malta. U.S. has announced the finalists chosen to compete in the Roland U.S. V-Accordion Festival being held at the Renaissance Orlando Airport Hotel 5445 Forbes Place, Orlando, Florida 32812 on July 29th. The event will be part of the 71st Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) Festival at the same hotel. The Roland Corp. U.S. finalists selected are listed in alphabetical order.  Ksenija Sidorova performs two concerts next week in London. First is on June 20th, 7.45pm, at the Purcell Room, and the second, which forms part of her MMus Degree at the Royal Academy of Music, takes place on June 22nd, 7pm, at St. Olave's Church, 8 Hart St, near Fenchurch St railway station. Both concerts are admission free.Classical accordionist Ksenija Sidorova, born in Latvia in 1988, obtained a BMus Diploma from the RAM in July 2009. She is currently in her final year of the Masters Program at the RAM, studying under Professor Owen Murray. Her many successes in London include being a joint winner of the ‘Friends of the Royal Academy of Music Wigmore Award,’ which led to her Wigmore Hall debut on May 18th 2009. Future engagements include a debut recital at the Lucerne Festival, Switzerland, on August 25th, 12.15pm, at the Church of St Luke, and the North Norfolk Festival in September 2011.
