Hubert Gall - 12 years "KA" at Cirque du Soleil - Las Vegas/USA

Hubert Gall
Hubert Gall and Holda Paoletti-KamplSome years have passed, since Hubert Gall decided to move to Las Vegas and to start his adventure with the most famous circus in the world – the “Cirque du Soleil“ created by Guy Laliberté who began his career as a fire-eater, juggler and accordionist in Montreal.

In 1984 Guy Laliberté founded the Cirque du Soleil thanks to the great friendship with a billionaire, met during a trip to Las Vegas, who decided to fully finance the project Laliberté.

Today the company is considered the world's most important in the entertainment industry and has approximately 4,000 employees. Laliberte is also considered one of the most eccentric and extravagant environment because of some special events in his life, most notably his climb that led him from a fire eater beggar to multi millionaire on the Forbes list of the world's richest.

Hubert Gall is collaborating with this important show since many years, performing his accordions, acoustic, digital and diatonic every evening in front of approximately 4,000 people, who come to watch the show running now for 12 years, known as “KA” at the magnificent MGM in Las Vegas!

I had the pleasure of meeting Hubert Gall personally last week and viewing the show as well as looking “behind the scenes!” I am in the pictures right and below (in black) with Hubert Gall and some of the caste.

In 2009 Accordions Worldwide published an interview with this interesting artist – read more: http://www.accordions.com/interviews/gall.aspx

9th Victoria International Accordion Festival, British Colombia - Canada

9th Victoria International Accordion Festival
9th Victoria International Accordion Festival posterThe 9th Victoria International Accordion Festival takes place from July 12th to 19th at venues in Victoria, BC, Canada. The festival opens on July 12th with a free concert at the Beacon Hill Park and ends with another free concert on July 19th at Market Square, with performers coming from New Zealand, China, Europe, and North America.

One of the chief guests this year is Grayson Masefield from New Zealand, whose mastery in both classical and variety fields is bringing audiences to their feet all over the world - concert 17th July. Also appearing is the the Accordion Orchestra Ugljevik, from Bosnia, renowned for their superb interpretations of Balkan music.

Local accordionist Rebecca Bracewell, a young rising star, will perform at the festival, and in a few weeks’ time, will be the first accordionist ever to perform in one of the largest summer events in North America, the ‘Symphony Splash’, with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

Also performing will be Jelena Milojevic, one of the foremost classical accordionists in North America, the BC Accordion Orchestra, Victoria Accordion Club Band, Bucan Bucan, along with many other performers.

On Saturday July 18th, 1pm, there will be the Victoria International Accordion Competition. This takes place at the Victoria Conservatory, Wood Hall, and has competition categories for solo players in various ages and styles on music.

Artistic producer Jelena Milojevic, who has taught some of the most prominent accordionists in Victoria city, sees the competition side of the wide-ranging festival as an indicator of the instrument’s growing appeal among a new generation. “There are many young, very talented accordionists coming, so from that point of view we can expect, in the future, having more and more accordion in this city.”

The Victoria International Accordion Competition, with contestants from Europe, North America and Asia, starts July 18th at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. The winners will appear the afternoon of July 19th at Market Square, the festival’s final day of programming.

Milojevic said “We’ve been working really, really hard in the past five, six years to put Victoria on the accordion map. Now, as I can see it, we are there. Accordion in Victoria is very vibrant.”

Slavko Avsenik (1929 – 2015), Begunje – Slovenia

Slavko Avsenik
Slavko AvsenikSlavko Avsenik, known as ‘The King of Oberkrainer music’, was Slovenia’s most famous folk accordionist and composer, personifying and popularising his country’s indigenous music in many parts of the world. His influence on accordionists of polka traditions in Slovenia, Europe and America was long lasting and profound.

Avsenik’s career took off in 1953 with the formation of the Brothers Avsenik ensemble, a quintet that recorded over 1000 songs/tunes, enjoyed enormous success in Slovenia and many parts of Europe and America, and Avsenik himself became viewed as a Slovenian cultural icon. Avsenik performed on radio and TV, before several heads of state, and sold 12 million records in his long and consistently successful career.

In 1953 Avsenik’s recently formed band did their first broadcast on the ‘Slovene Hour’ radio show from Austria, and were soon making radio and TV broadcasts in West Germany, where they also began appearing in concerts and movies. In 1960 Avsenik landed a lucrative recording contract with Telefunken-Decca, and his ensemble recordings were marketed throughout Europe, making him widely known. Career highlights included a 1961 performance before over 80,000 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, tours of the USA and Canada in 1970 and 1985, and a one-hour German TV network special in 1980.

As Slovenia's most popular music band, Slavko Avsenic and his group won many awards including eight consecutive TV competitions, twelve from German network television, eighteen as Germany's most popular band, the recording industry's ‘European Oscar’ in 1975, the ‘Golden Rose Award’ (most requested on Austrian radio) in 1979, the Linhart plaque (Slovenia), and the ‘Hermann Löns’ award from the German Ministry of Culture.

Avsenik collaborated with his brother, Vilko, to compose nearly 1000 original songs, many of which have found their way into the so-called Cleveland polka tradition.

Slavko Avsenik died on July 2nd 2015 at the age of 85.

Accordionist Rebecca Bracewell Overcomes Severe Hearing Loss, BC – Canada

Rebecca BracewellTeenage accordionist Rebecca Bracewell, 18, who overcame severe hearing loss, will perform two works by Astor Piazzolla — ‘Libertango’ and ‘Oblivion’ — as one of two soloists with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra at ‘Symphony Splash’ in Victoria, BC, Canada, on August 2nd. It will be the first time Splash has included an accordion soloist. She commented, “It’s such an honour to be the first accordion player. It’s so exciting. I’m so glad I was picked for this”. The other soloist is 16-year-old Ben Parker, who will play ‘Trumpet Concerto’, by Alexander Arutiunian.

Rebecca Bracewell was diagnosed with severe hearing loss as a three-year-old and uses hearing aids. She started piano lessons at age seven and switched to the accordion just three years ago. Last year, Bracewell was judged the best classical accordionist under 18 at the Victoria International Accordion Festival. She also recently placed at the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration in Washington State.
Rebecca studies with Jelena Milojevic, concert soloist and the Artistic Director of the Victoria International Accordion Festival. “She’s definitely one of the young (accordion) leaders of her generation in Canada,” Milojevic said. “One would never guess she has hearing aids. It’s extremely amazing. She has an incredible talent.”

Tania Miller, Victoria Symphony’s music director, said selecting an accordionist and a trumpeter as soloists was a deliberately unorthodox choice. “I’m completely thrilled with both of them, because neither is a pianist, neither is a violinist,” she said.

The project aims to promote the video clip ideation and originality, made by all professional and amateur video makers that are going to be inspired by the album ‘Modern Accordion’, by the accordionist Marco Lo Russo, born and commissioned as a discography work for synchronization with the images (commercials, TV and Cinema).

Seventeen tracks, where the young artist blends the sonority of the accordion with electronic arrangement, combining different musical languages: world music, chill out, ethno-jazz, tango, EDM, contemporary expression of feelings.

‘Modern Accordion’ has become also a show that crossed the European borders. Thanks to the collaboration with several theater dance companies, which choreographed its precious musical colors on many international stages. ‘Modern Accordion’ is a discographic work commissioned by the prestigious Filipper Music, directed by Romano di Bari, and furthermore it’s a concept, both acoustic and electronic contamination, where the accordion is the protagonist.

In the hands of the artist this poliedric instrument comes alive and plays a different role from the one of the secular. The participants, that want to transfer this inspiration in their artistic creation, are going to see the videos during the 2015 Fondi Film Festival, curated by Giuseppe De Santis Association, in the city of Fondi, in the province of Latina. The event will take place from September 19th to 27th.

An excellent jury, like the directors Ruggero Gabbai and Emanuele Giliberti, experts in the field and entertainment personalities is in charge to selecting the winner that will have the opportunity to collaborate with Flipper Music and make corporate videos.

Each participant will choose a track from the album Modern Accordion of the artist Marco Lo Russo aka Rouge on SOUNDCLOUD or will buy the album on ITunes  and make the video inspired by the track. After signing up, totally free, the song will be send in mp3.

The winner’s video has the opportunity to become the official video clip of the album Modern Accordion and his work can be projected in several Italian festivals. The Flipper Music reserves special awards for the best video.

You have until August 25th to get inspired by the accordion of Marco Lo Russo and present your video. Videos made by any device and support are allowed.
