New Book, ‘The Accordion in the Americas’, Nashville – USA

The Accordion in the AmericasFollowing the success of Marion Jacobson’s ‘Squeeze This! A Cultural History of the Accordion in America’, the University of Illinois Press has now published Helena Simonett’s edited volume ‘The Accordion in the Americas: Klezmer, Polka, Tango, Zydeco, and More!’ 

The book includes chapters on accordion culture in South Texas, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and other locations in North and South America.

Contributors are María Susana Azzi, Egberto Bermúdez, Mark DeWitt, Joshua Horowitz, Sydney Hutchinson, Marion Jacobson, James P. Leary, Megwen Loveless, Richard March, Cathy Ragland, Helena Simonett, Jared Snyder, Janet L. Sturman, and Christine F. Zinni.

Helena Simonett is an assistant professor of Latin American studies, associate director of the Center for Latin American Studies, and adjunct assistant professor in the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee.

Library Journal published a review calling ‘The Accordion in the Americas’, “…an excellent collection of ethnomusicology scholarship that will be of interest to those who like world music, ethnography, or unusual instruments”.

15th International Accordion Festival, Vilnius – Lithuania

The 15th International Accordion Festival Vilnius, Lithuania, takes place on 14th to 18th November at three venues in Vilnius, organised by the Lithuanian Accordion Association. The Artistic Director is Raimondas Sviackevicius (picture left).

This is a non-competitive festival, based around performance events involving leading national and international accordionists and ensembles.

Free Admission, World Premiere: Joan Grauman Accompanies Silent Movies, Washington DC – USA

Joan GraumanOn Saturday November 10th accordionist Joan Grauman will be part of a quintet playing the world premiere of a fantastic 70 minute work by Kim and Kathryn Kluge.

This music is accompanying several restored silent films made between 1899 and 1902, showing scenes from Paris.

The concert/film is at 2pm and free to the public at the East Building, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.

Joan Grauman is well known as the AAA Historian and AAA Board member, and was once the solo musician in Immergruen, Baltimore’s leading Bavarian performing group in the 1970s and 1980s.

Joan and her husband, Dan, own and operate SqueezinArt specializing in gifts for accordionists and are also the Directors of the Frank Marocco Accordion Event as well as being closely involved with many Washington DC area accordion activities.

Gala Tribute to José Ferreiro Pai (1895-1967) and José Ferreiro Júnior (1915-1964), Algarve - Portugal

José Ferreiro Pai (1895-1967) and José Ferreiro Júnior (1915-1964)On November 3rd a Grand Gala Tribute concert to José Ferreiro (father) and José Ferreiro (son), two famous Portuguese accordionists and composers took place at the Teatro das Figuras, Horta das Figuras, Estrada Nacional.

José Ferreiro Senior is widely recognized as the first significant accordionist in Portugal and the composer of music identified with the Algarve region, such as ‘Alma Algarvia’, the anthem of corridinhos.

This show with 800 people in the theatre (a full house) was the conclusion of the second stage of the project ‘Terra de Acordeão’, and provided moments of great beauty and diversity.

Many Portuguese accordionists took part, and the performers included the ensemble ‘Folequestra’ (accordion: Ana Rita Correia, André Duarte, Andreia Cabrita, Catarina Coelho, Daniel Silva, Gonçalo Guerreiro, Hernani Cerqueira, Jessica Guerreiro, Jessica Silvestre, Melissa Simplicio; classical guitar – Pedro Cabanita; acoustic bass - Claudio Sousa); accordionists José Correia, Lucia Barracosa, Luis Gama, Fabio Guerreiro, Hélder Barracosa; João Guerreiro, João Frade; The Nelson Conceição Quartet (accordion - Nelson Conceição, violin - João Pedro Cunha, classical guitar - Claudio Sousa, and vocals - Filipa Sousa); ‘Acordealma’ (accordion: Silvino Campos, João Pereira, Sérgio Conceição; bass - Tó Correia, Portuguese guitar - Ricardo Martins), Ilda Maria; Daniel Rato.

A CD ‘Tribute to the Ferreiros’ was presented at this event, which featured many of the players involved in the Grand Gala, plus the participation of the great accordionists Manuel Matias, Eugenia Lima and Hermenegildo Guerreiro.

The project ‘Terra de Acordeão’, which began in 2008 with the Big Homage to João Barra Bexiga, is sponsored by the Junta de Freguesia of St Barbara de Nexe in partnership with the Recreational Society of Bordeira, with the support of Faro Municipal Council, Regional Directorate of Culture, and Proder Algarve.

Its artistic coordinators are Hélder Barracosa, Hermenegildo Guerreiro and Nelson Conceição. In addition to large galas honoring the presence of some of the most respected accordionists, ‘Terra de Acordeão’ represents the various work of musicians and composers.

Two Jukka-Pekka Kuusela Concerts, Basilicata - Italy

Jukka-Pekka KuuselaFinnish accordionist Jukka-Pekka Kuusela recently played two successful recitals, with two different programs, which was held in the Basilicata region of Italy. The first evening was on October 30th in the new concert hall of Fondazione Sassi, and also included poetry by the Finnish poet Tuomo Heikkinen.

The other concert was on October 31st, a solo recital organized by the Conservatorio Duni di Matera, an event in the festival ‘Autunno Musica’, which was hold at Sal Le Monacelle, in the town of Matera.

This time Mr. Kuusela's programs included works by Sergei Berinsky, Mihail Bronner, Vladislav Zolotariov, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Timo-Juhani Kyllönen, Heikki Valpola, and Yevgeni Derbenko. The pieces by Mendelssohn and Kyllönen had their first performances in Italy. The artist met with high acclaim from the audiences.

Thomas BauerThis just released video of Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, arranged for piano and accordion orchestra, is performed by Erik Reischl (piano) and the Landes-Akkordeon-Orchester Hessen (LAOH), conducted by Thomas Bauer (picture right).

This live performance was filmed at a concert in May 2012, at the Kurhaus, Friedrich-von-Thiersch-Saal in Weisbaden. The soundtrack is recorded by Alfred Huff, Studio Tonmeister.

‘14 Years Ago’ – Autumn Accordion Festival tradition continues to this day

Malcolm GeeThe Accordions Worldwide news for November 13th 1998 included an article about the forthcoming Autumn Accordion Festival at Caister, Norfolk, England. Founded in 1986 by Malcolm Gee, whose sudden death in February 1997 stunned the British accordion scene, the Caister festival was rescued by Robert and Loreta Rolston, who ran the event for several years.

Fast forward to the present time, and this festival is now held at Mundesley, a holiday camp near to Caister, and organized by Heather Smith. Next year’s festival is set for October 7th to 11th 2013.

CAISTER ACCORDION FESTIVAL - UK

The Caister Accordion Festival will be held from November 13th to 16th in Caister, Norfolk. This popular annual event will include performances by local and international guests, including Amaryliss (England), Mike Belitz (USA), Gary Blair (Scotland), Professor Giancarlo Caporilli (Italy), Paul Chamberlain and David Nesbit (Scotland), Sue Coppard (England), Lars Ek (Sweden), Roberto Enzo (Italian living in Scotland), Ron Hodgson and Julie Best (England), Harry Hussey (England), Karl Johannesson (Iceland), Sheila Miller-Bowler (Canada), Ronmar Accordion Orchestra (England), Bill Sharp Accordion Orchestra (Scotland), Thames Valley Band (England), Weaver Valley Accordion Orchestra (England), and Ann Wilson (England).

This year Gary Blair will perform popular pieces such as ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and ‘Muchacha del fuego’ (samba) as well as performing duets with Professor Giancarlo Caporilli. Giancarlo has promised to wear a kilt as they will be playing a set of Scottish reels composed by Iain Macphail, which will include ‘Suzanne Barbour’, ‘Miss C.M. Barbour’, and ‘Miss Mary Printy’.

The Beltango Quintet have just finished their European tour, after 20 concerts in 11 countries, and will perform a Memorial Concert for the great composer Astor Piazzolla, who died 20 years ago in 1992.

The concert is on November 17th, 8pm, at the Central Military Club, 19 Brace Jugovica Street, Belgrade, Serbia. The concert is to pay tribute to the great maestro twenty years after his death and also marks ten years since the first Serbian bandoneon appeared on our tango scene.

The concert is part of the 9th International Belgrade Tango Festival, 17th & 18th November, organized by the Belgrade Tango Association and Belgrade Accordion Association.

Eddie Monteiro and Group Performing at Shanghai Jazz in New Jersey - USA

Eddie MonteiroWell known Jazz accordionist Eddie Monteiro is playing at Madison, New Jersey's Shanghai Jazz on Sunday, November, 11 with his trio. It will be an evening of Brazilian Jazz and Great American Favorites. Shanghai Jazz is located at 24 Main St, Madison, NJ. Phone: (973) 822-2899.

Widely known for his superbly entertaining style, Eddie Monteiro has over thirty years of musical performance in classical music, jazz, dance, theater and cabaret. Monteiro also is the youngest honoree ever elected to the American Accordionists’ Association Hall of Fame in 1994 and he has has performed at Jazz Festivals throughout the world.

Eddie Monteiro is a member of the AAA Governing Board, a graduate of NYU with a B.S. in Music Education and studied accordion with Charles Nunzio, (one of the founding members of the American Accordionists’ Association).
