CIA Merit Award for Werner Weibert - Austriaby Harley Jones |
At the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) Winter Congress in Kokkola in super clear winter conditions of -6C to -13C, the CIA Congress delegates unanimously and very warmly approved the CIA Merit Award to Werner Weibert of Austria. The official citation from the Harmonikaverband Österreichs (HVÖ) reads: Originally Werner Weibert studied with Prof. Walter Mieses - one of the most respected accordion teachers in Austria at the time - at the Conservatory of Vienna (Austria) and later Prof. Walter Maurer became his mentor. After winning the Austrian Accordion Solo competition in 1968 in Linz he represented his country five times including the Coupe Mondiales in Toronto 1964, Leicester 1968 and Salzburg 1970 with respectable results. After his solo career, he became a member of the board of the Austrian Accordion Association HVÖ, 1987 its vice president and 2009 president organizing Austria’s „Tag der Harmonica“ with categories for accordion, styrian harmonica and mouth-organ every two years, in between which, he organizes the Diatonic World Competition, being also the Editor of the Diatonic News of Accordions Worldwide. In 2014 Werner Weibert became chairman of the organizing committee (hence Honorary Vice President of the CIA) of the CM held in Salzburg, a memorable event which was well received and gained a lot of recognition on the international level. Werner Weibert looked after a number of Austrian CM candidates and is still the jury coordinator of the HVÖ. Starting in 1976 in Washington he served as Austrian delegate and adjudicator at international accordion competitions. Within the CIA, he undertook many times the functions of a member of the Coupe Mondiale calculation committee and also as a CIA auditor. In 1967, Werner Weibert was one of the co-founders of the Viennese Accordion Ensemble (WAKE), renowned and recognized in the accordion scene, and is still its director nowadays. It was one of only a few ensembles to receive the CIA Merit Award (1992) and, during a tour in the USA in 1985, it performed even in the world famous Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2017, WAKE celebrated its 50th anniversary with very successful concerts in Germany and Austria. His arrangements of works of various styles contributed significantly to the great success of the ensemble. The World Accordion Orchestra VIII played two of his arrangements at the Coupe Mondiale in Salzburg (2014) and he conducted himself, his “Tribute to Bernstein” arrangement. |

Accordion Orchestra Day, Cambridge – UKby Rob Howard |
The Cambridge Accordion Club contributed the following report: What a great Orchestra Day we had on Sunday! A wonderful new venue, Stapleford Granary, Cambridge, with our effervescent and extremely hard-working MD Nigel Pasby. Big thanks to Nigel, Helen and Matthew, to Susanna Brooking for organising this day for the Cambridge Accordion Club, and to everyone who came along to play and help on the day. Nigel brought us four of his excellent orchestral arrangements; John Lennon’s ‘Woman’, ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ by Justin Hayward, Sam Smith’s ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, and the theme from ‘A Summer Place’ by Max Steiner (originally arranged by his father, Cyril Pasby and revised by Nigel). We had had lots of delicious home-made cakes and cookies and a lot of chat, interspersed with a few band rehearsals, followed by a concert, to show what we had achieved in one busy day (an amazing orchestral sound!). Nigel and Helen then entertained us with some of their duet arrangements and we all went home, tired and smiling! Thankfully the snow had almost disappeared. So lovely to see everyone. Thank you all for coming. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year! |

These women remained dedicated to the AAA their entire lives: Maddalena Belfiore Greco, Addie Cere, Theresa Costello, Elsie Bennett and Faithe Deffner. Book Review: The Art of Arranging Classical Music for Accordion by Friedrich Lips - Germanyby Willoughby Walshe |
Currently, music schools and conservatories do not teach how to structure, design or implement arrangements of original compositions for other instruments. Friedrich Lips, bayan-accordion virtuoso and professor at the prominent Gnesin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, fills that gap with what could be used as course material with his book The Art of Arranging Classical Music for Accordion. First published in Russian and then German, it is now available in an updated and expanded form in English. Although the book was written primarily with classical music in mind, the findings, declarations and descriptions are made by the author in generally understandable and simple words. Therefore, they apply or can be transferred to all areas of music, including virtuoso light music, folk music, traditional music, etc. Similarly, while explanations focus on the concert bayan-accordion with converter bass, they are equally applicable to related instruments such as the Bandoneon, Concertina, Diatonic Accordion, Melodeon Player, etc. This is an essential book for composers, professional players, musicologists and active amateurs who want to understand and create arrangements of music as well as interpret and perform them. They will find a discussion of the basic principles of creating arrangements. These are followed by countless tips and numerous examples in musical notations for using the characteristics of the selected instrument to the best advantage. Descriptions include the accordion’s tonal range, use of registers to provide natural dynamics, bellows techniques explained in detail to enhance certain passages, types of articulation to be considered and methods of artistic presentation. One chapter is devoted to arranging organ music, which is written on three staffs (two for the keyboards and one for the foot pedal), where there are certain analogies between organ and accordion tone generation. Another chapter concentrates on arranging piano and cembalo music and explains how to overcome the differences between the percussive and bellows instruments. Extensive and detailed registers with names, terms, literature and titles of music examples included in the text provide the reader with significant source material. The excellent content of the book corresponds to the outward appearance of the book: typographically lavish with finest Italian paper, thread-stitching, laminated softcover with double flap and exclusive design – worthwhile, treasured. 232 pages · 150 sheet music samples · Format: 17 x 24 cm · ISBN 978-3-925572-17-3 Purchase at Catalog No: kslips03 The Art of Arranging Classical Music for Accordion |
