Accordion Days 2021: New World of Sound - 40 Years of Development - Austria

Final concert
Alfred Melichar, Wei BijunThe Accordion Days 2021, coordinated by Prof. Alfred Melichar (picture left), took place in cooperation with the Upper Austria Harmonica Association at the Anton Bruckner Private University (formerly Bruckner Conservatory) in Linz on September 29th and 30th, 2021.

Program: 2021AntonBruckner.pdf

The event shed light on the more than 40-year history of accordion education and in particular the development of the original literature for accordion and chamber music for accordion and other instruments.

One focus was on more recent works by living composers - based on and initiated by numerous performers who have been trained since 1980 mainly in the accordion class of Prof. Alfred Melichar (see picture left) at the Anton Bruckner Private University and by Alfred Melichar himself.

After the opening by Rector Ursula Brandstätter, Alfred Melichar introduced the first concert (as part of a composer talk), where interesting details about the works to be performed, “Jogging with new music” (three world premieres!) by graduates of the Anton Bruckner Private University.

The evening concert “Metaphysical, or not?” was performed by Melichar personally and the Ensemble Wiener Collage, where Melichar's solo performances and Schönberg's “5 orchestral pieces in the chamber ensemble version, op. 16” under the baton of the Vienna Philharmonic René Staar stood out.

The second day started with three very interesting lectures on "The Accordion in China" (Wei Bijun, MA - picture left), "New Works by Serbian Composers" (Dr. Branko Dzinovic, MA) and "Music in Concentration Camps" (Paul Schuberth, BA).

The end of the inspiring event was followed by the “Kaleidoscope” concert with students from the Upper Austrian regional music schools, as well as jazz, world and popular music in “Downtown and Uppertown” and tango in “Todo tango y mucho mas”, performed by graduates of the Anton Bruckner Private University as well as the ensembles "Dos y Tres", "El Cabaseo" and "Salon Odjila". (see picture above).

All in all, an impressive performance show of 40 years of pedagogical and artistic work of Alfred Melichar!
