Accordion Part of the 2016 WQXR Instrument Drive, New York - USA

WQXR Instrument Drive
Don Gerundo & Dallas ViettyVideo above: Don Gerundo and Dallas Vietty assist the 2016 WQXR Instrument Drive

Last year, the WQXR Radio Instrument Drive debuted with the modest goal of collecting 1,000 gently used instruments to distribute to New York City public school music programs. New York’s only classical music station exceeded its aim spectacularly - collecting 3,000 instruments - triple its initial goal!

This year, accordion is part of the WQXR program.

Accordionists Don Gerundo and Dallas Vietty volunteered their time and traveled to NYC on 1st July 2016 to help WQXR personnel to inventory the instruments.

Dallas said, "The WQXR staff is amazing. We met the two people in charge, Kathleen and Crystal. In ten days, about 100 accordions were donated! "

The Youth Promotion Committee is a relatively new AAA committee. Don Gerundo is Chairman assisted by Dallas Vietty and Marilyn O'Neil. The goal of the Youth Promotion Committee is to increase the number of youth that are playing and learning the accordion.

To date the committee ran a successful pilot program in May at a Bethlehem, PA public school and is working on bringing more outreach programs to the NY, CT, NJ, PA areas.

If you missed the window to drop-off instruments, not to worry! Pledge your instrument online at wqxr.org/kids and drop it off at Sam Ash Music Stores in New York and New Jersey anytime!

This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of distinguished Finnish accordionist, composer, arranger, and accordion designer Lasse Pihlajamaa, who was born in Jämijärvi, a few miles outside Ikaalinen.

In 2004, the first official function of the annual Sata-Häme Soi - Accordion Festival is a folk concert and gathering at Lasse Pihlajamaa's monument "In the Memory of my Mother". This was attended by Lasse Pihlajamaa with pictures and report at: http://www.accordions.com/finland/04_06_29_tue.htm

2004 Celebrity Interview with Lasse Pihlajamaa at: http://www.accordions.com/finland/04_interview.htm

Lasse Pihlajamaa, one of the long-term leading figures in the story of the accordion in Finland, taught at his own Accordion Institute in Helsinki from 1957 to 1972, and was a key figure in the development of teaching and playing methods. Due to his work, in 1977 the accordion began to be accepted in several major conservatories including the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Pihlajamaa also did much to develop the accordion as an instrument, especially for children, and many talented children were able to choose the accordion as their own instrument.

Pihlajamaa is to be honored at this year’s accordion festival ‘Sata-Häme Soi’ Ikaalinen. The opening ceremony of the festival takes place at the Lasse Pihlajamaa monument in Jämijärvi, standing on the same place as Lasse's birth house stood once.

There are exhibitions and history about Lasse Pihlajamaa around Ikaalinen. On Friday July 8th there will be a large memorial concert where a number of important Finnish accordion players will participate. The concert will also be broadcast on Finnish TV.

Renzo Ruggieri Releases Solo Composition, Acquarelli Italiani - Italy

Renzo RuggieriThe sheet music for the Renzo Ruggieri solo composition, catalog: rrenzo509 - Acquarelli Italiani, is now available.

This work is recorded in the newly released album "Accordion Colours" by international competition winner Andrea Di Giacomo.

Renzo Ruggieri (picture right) writes about the work: "Acquarelli Italiani was composed in 2003 for accordion and symphony orchestra, later adapted for solo accordion. It is a tribute to "Aquarelli Cubani" composed by the genius Luciano Fancelli. Acquarelli Italiani is a similar operation but based on the rhythm of "tarantella".

The arrangement is quite difficult (also contains a transcribed improvisation) and is often used in international competitions and concerts for the brilliant repertoire."

Report of Recitals by Sidorova, Glowacki and Purits and Future Performances - UK

Ksenija SidorovaVideo above: Bartosz Glowacki performs "The Destroyed Cathedral" composed by Vaclav Trojan, published Jan 10, 2016.

The summer season 2016 is demonstrating the level of accordion talent passing through the small department at the Royal Academy of Music in London, tutor Professor Owen Murray.

On Saturday June 25th, at an evening concert in London’s Wigmore Hall, Ksenija Sidorova (picture left), an immediate past post-graduate student, gave a fine performance to a near capacity and very appreciative audience. She was supported by Andreas Ottensamer (clarinet) and Jose Gallardo (piano) with a wonderful programme of solo and duo works. Ksenija began with two large solo works, Anatoly Kusyakov’s six-part suite ‘Autumnal Landscapes’, and continued with Alfred Schnittke’s ‘Revis Fairy Tales’, both beautifully played and enthusiastically received by the audience.

In the second half of the concert Ksenija presented together with Andreas Ottensamer and his clarinet an exquisite arrangement of Piazzolla’s ‘Histoire du Tango’ and Bela Bartok’s ‘Romanian Folk Dances’, and a charming new work, by Efrem Podgaits, called ‘Rendezvous with Haydn’. It has to be said with each of these works that both artists produced a focused and articulated sound from their instruments, which left their audience with a memorable musical experience. They finished their programme with two Piazzolla encores.

Earlier in June Bartosz Glowacki and Iosif Purits gave two splendid recitals at the RAM. Both recitals were part of their presentation for the degree of Master of Music (M.Mus), which they have received with distinction. Both recitals included the requirement of chamber works with other instrumental groupings.

Special mention should be made of Purit’s solo performance of ‘Sonata No 3’ by Zolotarev, a work in which he showed himself to be an artist of world class in his generation. Indeed, earlier in the month (June 6th) Purits had also given a shared recital with a full evening programme in the Wigmore Hall as a prize winner of the RAM Patron’s Award, a top prize.

Both Iosif Purits and Ksenija Sidorova can be heard again at the Cheltenham Festival in July: Ksenija on July 11th and Purits on July 16th.

Purits will also be a BBC Radio 3 ‘introducing’ artist at 5pm on July 16th. Bartosz Glowacki has also been an ‘open space’ artist at the Aldeburgh Festival, and will appear again in the BBC Promenade Concert with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on August 20th.

The importance of these activities (and others) is the remarkable success that is now being achieved in the integration of the accordion into classical music concerts, with excellent prospects for the careers for young players and opportunities to hear them.

The London Accordion Orchestra (MD Ian Watson) spent Sunday July 3rd recording their first studio album at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, St John’s Wood, Westminster, London. The day was described on the LAO’s media page: “Not just any studio, we were at Abbey Road. An incredible experience for the whole orchestra and the sound in the hall was exceptional. It was a tiring but inspirational day - look out for the album coming later this year, it's going to be very special”.

LAO began life as Morley Accordion Orchestra, based at Morley College, in 1999. The ensemble plays a wide variety of music - from original works for accordion orchestra to show tunes and film scores. There are now 35 members of the senior orchestra and 15 members of our training ensemble - LIAO.

Abbey Road Studios (formerly known as EMI Studios), opened in 1931, is probably the world’s most famous recording facility. The first to record there was Paul Robeson, and its many clients have included Al Bowlly, Benjamino Gigli, Fats Waller, London Symphony Orchestra, Pablo Casals, Jack Emblow, Jimmy Shand, Cliff Richard, The Shadows, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Nigel Kennedy, John Lennon, The Hollies, Pink Floyd, Connie Francis, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Wonder, and, most famously, The Beatles.

New Compositions: Three New Compositions by Douglas Ward - UK

Douglas WardCharnwood Publishing has released three new compositions by Douglas Ward.

DW933 Bootstrap Tango: Standard: Grade 5 Approximate playing time: 3 min 10 sec. Written in D minor in 4/4 time, after an introduction which includes a bar in 6/4 time, the first section proceeds as a normal tango, with a characteristic accompanying bass that sets and keeps its rhythmic flow. The treble is kept busy, with melody notes sustained over canonic harmony phrases underneath. The end of the first section then morphs into a more romantic section, in D Major, with its very hummable theme, and similar rhythmic basses. It then reverts to D minor, but with a different, second singing 16-bar theme before a repeat of the D Major section, and then (almost) the original theme in D minor, plus a little flourish at the end. It is ideally suited to Stradella bass instruments.

DW934 Precipice: Standard: Grade 8+, Written in the keys of G and E Major, with excursions into F# major and B minor, there are varying degrees of complexity within what looks at first to be a simple piece. Unlike much of today’s music, this piece presents the listener with several melodic motifs that can be remembered, and the player with musical and instrumental challenges that require both technique and interpretative skills. Time Signatures Used: 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/8, 8/4, and 14/8

DW935 Tributaries: Standard: Grade 6, Approximate playing time: 3 min 0 sec. Written in E minor in 4/4 time, the composition starts by commanding attention, and is followed by several rubato bars. This is followed by an eight-bar melody with basses that require left hand dexterity when moving from Em to Eb7. The second section has a fugue-like motif – the first four bars of which have a staccato directive, the second four bars are in a looser semi-legato form; the eight bars are then repeated one octave higher. An eight bar bellows-shake section follows, and this leads into a slightly faster 15-bar section before a recap to the original theme and melody leading to an accelerating finish.
