From the 30th May to the 2nd of June 2013, the Harmonika World Championship took place in in Mayrhofen/Tirol, Austria, which is a lovely tourist attraction in the Alps of Austria with a new concert hall – the Europahaus.

There was three days of music with the participation of local TV ORF and European harmonika star Marc Pircher (who is from Mayrhofen).

The concert hall was full for all three days, with enthusiastic audiences, making this championship a highly appreciated event. About 200 competitors from Slovenia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland were also happy with the enthusiastic audiences and received a number of standing ovations.

The 2013 Harmonika Champion Alexander Pamer (picture top left) comes from South-Tirol, Italy and the Junior Champion Mattia Demetz (lower left) also from Italy.

Danielle Pauly Opens 'Accordéon Paris Gourmands' Shop, Paris – France

Danielle Pauly and the Accordeon Paris GourmandsDanielle Pauly Accordion Day Opening poster'Accordéon Paris Gourmands', based at 80 rue Daguerre (close to Montparnasse and Denfert Rochereau), 75014 Paris, opens in June.

Owned by French accordionist Danielle Pauly and her wines expert husband Jean-Philippe Laruelle, this shop will operate jointly as an accordion and a fine wines retail business.

The accordion side offers chromatic and piano accordions, repairs and lessons. The wines are from France and Italy.

World Accordion Orchestra VII, 2013 CIA Coupe Mondiale, Victoria - Canada.

World Accordion Orchestra VII poster66th Coupe Mondiale posterThe 66th International CIA Coupe Mondiale, 19th to 25th August, 2013 is in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada hosted by the Canadian CIA member, the British Columbia Accordion Society, President Aleksandar Milojevic.

All are welcomed to this exciting international accordion event and accordionists are invited to perform in the CIA World Accordion Orchestra (WAO) VII.

The first work will be Danse Villageoise by Claude Champagne, arranged and conducted by Maureen Jarosh.

The second work will be a selection from Les Misérables by Claude-Michel Schönberg & Herbert Kretzmer, arranged and conducted by Joan Cochran Sommers, CIA Vice President and founder of the WAO.

Les Misérables will also feature the New Zealand tenor, Lionel Reekie who has sung this particular piece with several symphony orchestras recently.

The members of the CIA WAO VII will again include musicians from many different countries – including many officers of the CIA and delegates attending the 130th CIA Congress.

‘World Meeting of Accordion Music’, Valledupar – Colombia

Silvio PrevalesLácides RomeroThe 5th ‘World Meeting of Accordion Music’ in Valledupar, Colombia, takes place from June 19th to 22nd.

The festival offers competitions for solo accordionists and ensembles that feature accordion, and is organized by the Reyes Y Juglares Vallenatos Foundation.

This year’s guests include Colombia’s Duo Nuevo Mundo - accordionist Lácides Romero (picture right) and clarinet player Francisco Rivera; Landazábal Luis Eduardo Cortés, from Colombia, an accordionist renowned for playing Latin American rhythms, especially music from Brazil, Chile and Paraguay, and Silvio Prevale (pictured left), from Uruguay.

Walter Gialdi, who represented Argentina at the 2007 International Festival in Castelfidardo, Italy, is another international guest.

The festival will include a tribute to Don Jacob Luque García, the first to import Hohner accordions into Colombia.

The South Pacific Accordion Championships, which includes the New Zealand Accordion Championships, was held at Epsom, Auckland, on June 1st and 2nd. Winner of the top solo category was Edward Giffney (picture left top).

Christine Adams (picture lower left) was awarded Life Membership of the New Zealand Accordion Association (NZAA).

Head of the Jury was Prof. Wang Hongyu (picture right), Head of Accordion, Vice-President of Media College of Harbin Normal University.

New CD ‘Cafe Culture’ from Eddy Jay and Fiona Barrow, Bristol – UK

‘Cafe Culture’ is a new CD from accordionist Eddy Jay and violinist Fiona Barrow, who together have also composed and arranged all the music, written in a Continental style. The CD – also available on iTunes - is released on the West One’s Scoring House label.

The CD features Eddy Jay on accordion, guitar and double bass, Fiona on violin, Richard Harvey on clarinet, and Pete Judge on trumpet.

"Are you trying to do me out of a job?" a lighthearted but genuine quote from Hank Marvin when he heard Eddy Jay had learned to play Hot Club style guitar specially for this album.

Eddy Jay and Fiona Barrow are known to many as the accompanists to singer Eve Louisseau in the popular ‘Piaf’ concert shows.

Video: Accordion Ensemble "Concertino" - Moldavia


Accordion Ensemble "Concertino" was founded on 18th October 2003 in Moldavia and since then has become popular with audiences in many countries.

Concertino was recently performing at the 50th Anniversary Klingenthal Competitions and Festival and also the World Music Festival in Innsbruck, each time, to enthusiastic applause from the audiences.

A wonderful group of very talented young performers and very nice people too.

‘14 Years Ago’ – The 4th Beijing Accordion Newspaper published in 1999

Li CongThe Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending June 4th 1999 reported that the 4th Beijing Accordion Newspaper had been recently published. The accordion needs its own press, and this Chinese newspaper will surely have been welcome and useful for all concerned. Accordions Worldwide is all about broadcasting accordion news internationally, and naturally supports the efforts of others to do likewise.

The 4th Beijing Accordion Newspaper was issued in Beijing recently. The newspaper was set up in August 1996 and reports accordion activities in China.

The latest issue includes a report on the Beijing Cup Accordion Competition which was held in February this year, recent developments in accordion instruments, information on the 4th Beijing Accordion Summer Camp, the Accordions Worldwide Chinese language internet site and accordion thesis details.

Accordion Kings & Queens Festival, Texas – USA

Michael RamosOn Saturday June 1st at the 24th annual Accordion Kings & Queens Festival at Houston's Miller Outdoor Theatre the Finals were held for Texas Folklife's Big Squeeze Accordion Contest. The winner was Michael Ramos (pictured right) from Dallas. There were 3 other finalists: Tony Garcia of Mission, Yesenia Garcia of Houston, and Luis Gonzalez of Grand Prairie. Congratulations to the new Champ and to all the finalists.

Michael Ramos won a prize package valued at more than $4,000, which includes a cash prize, a new Hohner accordion, performance opportunities, publicity, and professional development opportunities.

Marco Lo Russo collaborates with artist Maz Frezzato, Tuscany - Italy

Marco Lo RussoOn Sunday June 9th, 7pm, in Hotel Monteverdi, Castiglioncello del Trinoro, Tuscany, accordionist Marco Lo Russo collaborates with Maz Frezzato, a leading comic book author/illustrator, to create a live visual and aural illustration, inspired by one of the themes in the forthcoming ‘Athena Castiglioncello Trinoro’ competition. Marco Lo Russo will improvise world music, jazz and tango to match the art of Maz Frezzato.

The ‘Athena Castiglioncello Trinoro’ event takes place in the town, September 13th to 15th, and is open to all Italian artists.

Somerville Squeezebox Slam, Massachusetts – USA

The second Somerville Squeezebox Slam – a celebration of accordions and related instruments - takes place on Saturday June 15th, from 1pm until 6pm, in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts. The organizer is Michael McLaughlin, and guests include Cory Pesaturo, Sandy Theodorou, Ralph Tufo, Marié Abe and Grand Fatilla w/Roberto Cassan.

From 1-3pm accordionists will stroll around Somerville, ultimately congregating in Davis Sq. Local accordionists bring your boxes, band together or find your own corner and play. There are no rules! This is accordion anarchy. At 3pm, all head to Davis Sq. where Lady Kielbasia will get the concert rolling. Accordion themed art/crafts and Redbones BBQ food will be for sale.

Kielbasia is an accordion playing Drag Lunch Lady. She’s been voted ‘Best Drag Queen with an Accordion’ in San Francisco, and was named Provincetown’s ‘Family Favorite’. After a long and illustrious career in cabaret, burlesque, and shameless private party entertainment in San Francisco, Provincetown, LA, and NYC, she is now semi-retired with her kitty and garden in Somerville.
