Carl Fortina (1929-2014), Californie – USAby Rob Howard |
 Carl Fortina, sans doute l’accordéoniste ayant réalisé le plus grand nombre d’enregistrements au monde, fut le premier à mener une carrière de musicien de studio dans l’industrie cinématographique à Hollywood, ouvrant la voie à d’autres dont feu Frank Marocco.Fortina a joué sur les B.O de plus de 550 films, dont ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, La conquête de l’Ouest, ‘Love Me Tender’, Paint Your Wagon’, Star Trek’, la trilogie ‘Le Parrain”, etc. Et également dans près de 25 000 émissions TV comme « Bonanza »/ Lorsque Nino Rota, compositeur de la musique du Parrain a entendu Carl jouer le thème de la B.O., il lui a dit « Tu ne joues pas avec tes mains, tu joues avec ton coeur ». Fils d’un accordéoniste, le jeune Carl a commencé à jouer à l’âge de 4 ans sur un tout petit instrument à 12 basses. A la grande joie de son père, Carl l’écoutait jouer un thème simple et le lui rejouait aussitôt. Doué d’une oreille absolue et d’une grande mémoire, Carl a suivi les cours de John Pezzolo, professeur bien connu de San-Francisco, et il a fait ses débuts en public à 5 ans en donnant un concert dans un festival en Californie devant 15 000 personnes. Ce fut le début d’une longue et brillante carrière d’accordéoniste de concert. Après 2 ans d’armée comme tambour major dans le 6ème régiment d’infanterie, Carl s’installa en 1953 à Los Angeles où il devint pour les 35 années suivantes l’accordéoniste le plus demandé d’Hollywood. Vers 1973, Carl est devenu chef d’orchestre sous contrat pour ne nombreuses productions holywoodiennes et en 1976 il fut nommé chef d’orchestre pour la Paramount, poste qu’il occupa pendant 30 ans. Il a travaillé avec de grands noms comme Elvis Presley, Cher, Barbara Streisand, John Williams, Marvin Hamlisch, Henry Mancini, pour ne citer qu’eux. Carl Fortina fut nommé Directeur Honoraire lors de la convention Internationale d’Accordéon de Las Vegas en 2008. Il était très aimé et respecté de ses pairs et considéré comme un honnête homme par tous ceux qui l’approchaient. Il est mort d’un emphysème le 30 janvier 2014 à 84 ans. |

  Les inscriptions sont ouvertes pour le 8éme festival et concours d’accordéon, prix Orpheus 2014, qui est un prix de la critique pour les productions de CD, DVD, MP3 de l’année 2013, dans lesquelles l’accordéoniste (y compris bandonéoniste, harmoniciste, diatoniste), leader ou co-leader, est italien.L’Orpheus est un prix comparable à un oscar de cinéma destiné aux sociétés de productions produisant de l’accordéon. Le concours, le festival et la remise des prix de l’Orpheus se dérouleront à Roseto degli, Abruzzes (TE, Italie), les 14 et 15 juillet. Le directeur artistique sera le célèbre journaliste musical Gerlando Gatto, (photo de droite) et l’organisateur de l’évènement est Renzo Ruggieri (photo de gauche). Les co-organisateurs sont l’Associazione Promozione Arte en collaboration avec la ville de Pineto (TE, Italy), le Club Voglia D'Arte et des sponsors privés. Clôture des inscriptions le 30 avril 2014.  Richard Galliano a été couronné vainqueur de la catégorie « meilleur compositeur de musique classique » pour sa composition intitulée ‘Fables of Tuba’, lors de la 21ème édition des Victoires de la Musique Classique le 3 février dernier au Grand Théâtre d’Aix-en-Provence. L’événement était retransmis par la TV française.Vidéo ci-dessus : Richard Galliano et Rafael Mejias (duo), vidéo réalisée le 6 février 2014, jouent « Fou rire » célèbre composition de Galliano. Rassemblement du Shand Morino – Ecosse – Royaume-Uniby Rob Howard |
  Le rassemblement annuel du Shand Morino s’est tenu le dimanche 19 janvier à l’institut Windygates de Fife, Ecosse, et a accueilli un grand nombre d’amateurs enthousiastes dont de nombreux musiciens. Bruce Lindsay Senior a ouvert la journée par une brève histoire du Shand Morino (photo de droite), un accordéon diatonique britannique à 3 rangs produit au départ par Hohner en 1939 pour Jimmy Sand devenu un joueur incontournable. A la suite de l’exposé introductif fut donné un concert avec George Wilson, Davy Ross, Roy Magna, Robin Waitt, Ian Cruickshanks, Alex Houston, Arthur Wood, Sandy McAllan, Archie Paterson, Davie Millar, Cody Roberts, Donal Ring, Scott Band, Roger Dobson, Andy Grieg, Bill Young, Ian Stewart, Gladys Wright – tous solistes sur Shand Morino. L’après-midi se termina de façon typiquement écossaise par un boeuf rassemblant tous les musiciens sur scène autour de quelques morceaux célébres. De nombreux autres musiciens étaient présents, certains comme accompagnateurs, mais l’événement fut bien la célébration du mythique Shand Morino, rendu célèbre par feu le grand Jimmy Shand (photo de gauche). |

 Keeping an instrument in tune can be a nightmare for any professional musician, what with travelling to gigs on bumpy roads or playing in chilly concert halls. But few instrumentalists can claim to have as much of a journey as Paul Chamberlain, the classical accordionist who has just come back from Italy where he had his accordion tuned in the town where it was made.Because of the complex nature of the accordion’s mechanisms, tuning Paul’s instrument requires a trip to Castelfidardo in Italy. When flying with the accordion, Paul has to purchase an additional seat as the instrument is just a little too large for normal hand-luggage requirements. Fortunately, tuning is only required every three or four years. The complex tuning procedure involves splitting the accordion at the bellows to gain access to the instrument’s reeds, of which there are over 900. Each reed must be checked and double-checked until the tuning is correct, which most professional tuners are able to do by ear. “Once all of the reeds have been tuned the accordion is re-assembled and a final check of all the reeds is done. I returned the following day to check everything and any minor corrections can be then done immediately,” says Paul. Saves a flight back to Italy! |

 The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending February 11th 2000 included an item about a documentary about the origins of the Texas-based Conjunto genre, also known as Tex-Mex‘Accordion Dreams’ Documentary – USA Contributed by Evy Ledesma Documentary filmmaker Hector Galan is currently producing a documentary intended for national PBS broadcast in the USA entitled ‘Accordion Dreams’. This documentary will trace the journey of the accordion from Germany to South Texas, where it became the driving force behind a unique American musical genre called Conjunto, a music with German and Mexican influences. This program looks at today’s young rebel accordionists who have expanded this musical style to the fringes of rock, metal, and pop, while paying homage to its pioneers. Galan has already produced ‘Songs of the Homeland’, a documentary featuring the accordion. |
