Vincent Lhermit CD Release and Concert Dates – Franceby Rob Howard |
Accordionist Vincent Lhermit and viola da gamba player Marianne Muller have collaborated on a recording titled ‘Poetical Humors’, presenting music from the Elizabethan era by Bull, Dowland, Gibbons, Hume, Hersant, Tidrow, etc. The CD was released on September 21st on the Harmonia Mundi International label. Forthcoming concert dates include: Poetical Humors: October 13th on France Musique and January 16th 2019 at the Lille Opera Contemporary music for viola da gamba and accordion: December 2nd in Lyon (Rencontres Contemporary Festival) The Art of Fugue by Bach: May 3rd, 4th, 5th 2019 in La Courroie, featuring Alice Piérot, baroque violinist Sonates by Bach: August 2019 at the Bach en Combrailles Festival Vincent Lhermit (born 1987) is regarded by his contemporaries as one of the most accomplished French accordionists of his generation. He graduated from the Sibelius Academy of Helsinki, Finland, and was the first ever accordionist to be admitted to the Doctorate of Music Performance (PhD) at the Paris Conservatoire, Sorbonne University, Paris. He won first prize in the Arrasate-Hiria International Competition in Spain (2006), and regularly performs worldwide as a soloist with orchestras, ensembles and chamber groups. He is currently teaching accordion at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatoire and the Higher Arts Education Centers of Lille and Paris/Boulogne-Billancourt. They began performing together professionally in 1975, playing ‘easy listening’ songs and tunes with some traditional Irish music. In 1979 they released the single ‘A Bunch of Thyme’ in Ireland, which became their first top-selling No. 1 single in the Irish charts, soon afterwards repeating the feat in the UK. Several other hit singles and albums followed, and the duo became internationally popular. They have to date achieved album and video sales in excess of 22 million worldwide. On Saturday morning September 29th six members of the Stockport Accordion Club had a great time performing a half-hour set during Woodley Methodist Church's 150th anniversary wee16kend event on Saturday September 29th. Stockport AC has been based at the church since 2006. Left to right in the picture are Marj Howard, Norbert Normile, John Curvis, Rob Howard, Betty Molloy and Diana Tong. The group’s programme included Alexander's Ragtime Band, Blue Danube, Moonlight Serenade, Bavarian Drinking Songs, Vienna City of my Dreams, Black Forest Polka, The Dark Island, Amapola, Waltzes from the North, and My Way. Rob Howard writes: “We all enjoyed ourselves and made several new friends along the way, including a man who is keen to buy and learn the accordion and a gentleman from India who plays the accordion plus other instruments. He took lots of photos and videos of us, and returned home to India the next day, promising to introduce us to all his friends. Could Stockport AC be en route for a gig in Mumbai anytime soon?”. |

A floating accordion festival on board the cruise ship Costa Luminosa takes place from Saturday September 29th to Saturday October 6th, sailing around the Mediterranean and visiting Venice, Trieste, Corfu, Katakolon, Mykonos, and Dubrovnik. The entertainers are the French accordionists Michel Pruvot, Lionel Belluard, Stephanie Rodriguez, Benoit Plaitin, and the bandoneon player Raymond Caille. |
Tango Swing et Bretelles, Montceau-Les-Mines – Franceby Rob Howard |
The week-long festival Tango Swing et Bretelles, featuring a variety of music and dance acts, takes place at venues in Montceau-Les-Mines (71) from September 29th to October 7th. Montceau-les-Mines is a commune in the Saône-et-Loire department in the region of Bourgogne in eastern France. The Paris-Moscow Duo – accordionists Domi Emorine and Roman Jbanov - performs in concert on Monday October 1st, 8.30pm, at the Auditorium Jean Maillot ADJ. The following evening, at 8.30pm, Roman Jbanov will perform a solo concert in the same venue. Roman and his sister, the pianist Anna Jbanov, will perform duets on Thursday October 4th, 8.30pm, in the same venue. |

The Frank Gavigan Memorial Concert takes place on Friday October 5th, 8pm, at the Milltown Community Centre, Rathconrath, County Westmeath, Irish Republic. The concert involves many entertainers, including accordionists Mick Foster (of Foster & Allen fame), Colm Slattery, Michael Curran, Moyra Fraser, harmonica player Noel Battle, and the Rathconrath Ceili Band. Admission is 15 Euro. Frank Gavigan was a popular local musician, renowned for his fund raising for charities. |

The French national accordion championships, Trophee National de l’Accordeon, take place on Saturday October 6th and Sunday October 7th at the Salle Saint-Exupery, Semur-en-Auxois, a commune of the Côte-d'Or department in eastern France. Johnny Crampsie Weekend, Northern Ireland – UKby Rob Howard |
On Saturday October 6th the Johnny Crampsie Weekend takes place in the Strabane Library, Tyrone, Northern Ireland, featuring music workshops with All Scotland Champion Leonard Brown – accordion, Liam Stewart – piano (bring you own keyboard), and Anne-Marie Devine with Aishling Murray – tin whistle. In the evening The Leonard Brown Show - an outstanding show including Gene Fitzpatrick, Chrissy Mac and Irish Dancers – takes place at The Alley Theatre, Strabane. After the concert all are invited to a session in the Stables Inn for a fantastic night of music- everyone welcome to join in! Tickets for the show are available from The Alley Theatre Box Office. Leonard Brown, from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the North-East of England, is a highly accomplished and versatile accordionist and pianist. In only a few years Leonard Brown has accomplished a great deal. In 2012 he graduated from Newcastle University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classical Music. He has been successful in many competitions, and in 2012 became the All Scotland Traditional Champion at Perth (becoming only the second Englishman to be the All Scotland Accordion Champion, the other being Robert Whitehead in 1968). He was awarded the prestigious Jimmy Shand Shield by the adjudicator John Carmichael. He has recorded several CDs and DVDs, and is also a notable concert organiser. |

Oktoberfest in Portland with TDA, Washington – USAby Rob Howard |
Those Darn Accordions (TDA) perform at the Northwood Public House and Brewery, Battleground in the Portland area, Washington, on October 6th and 7th. TDA says, “The party starts at 11.30 am on Saturday October 6th and continues on Sunday October 7th. Lots of great music, food and beer! Battleground is just a 20 minutes’ drive north of Portland, so we are hoping to see all our PDX pals there!”. Those Darn Accordions are a small accordion band from San Francisco, originally formed in 1989 by Linda "Big Lou" Seekins. With several accordionists whose numbers have fluctuated over the years plus a bassist and a drummer, Those Darn Accordions play a multi-genre mix of rock, pop and polka music, characterized by the unusual use of effects and distortion on their accordions and the humorous lyrics of current frontman Paul Rogers. The band also performs from an extensive repertoire of covers, ranging from traditional accordion standards and polkas to hard rock, funk and new wave songs. TDA have released six studio albums. The band continues to tour the USA, often performing as part of music festivals, fairs and Oktoberfest events across the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. The Barimar Quartet performs at Pizza Express, Dean Street, Soho, London, at 12noon on Sunday October 7th. The name Barimar conjures up the magic of the golden era of accordion music. Barimar, born Mario Barigazzi in 1925, along with Gorni Kramer, Wolmer Beltrami, Gigi Stok, Nando Monica and Carlo Venturi, were once Italy’s most prominent global accordionists. Fortunately, the Barimar Quartet, comprising of accordionist Iuri Vallara, a student of Barimar, violinist Marina Mammarella, bassist Agide Bandini and percussionist Domenico Fontana, are bringing Barimar’s music to London. |
Akkordeon Orchester Wesseling Workshops, Wesseling – Germanyby Rob Howard |
The Akkordeon Orchester Wesseling (MD Anita Brandtstäter) offers accordion orchestra workshops for players of all abilities on October 11th, November 8th, 15th and 22nd. These workshops begin at 6.30pm and last for one hour, and take place at Mühlenweg 43, Aula Gartenstraße, 50389 Wesseling, Germany. On November 24th, 7pm, at the same venue, there will be a performance concert of the pieces studied. Founded in 1965 by Gottfried Weber, the Akkordeon Orchester Wesseling has been conducted since 2010 by Anita Brandtstaeter, and has a repertoire ranging from classical to rock/pop/jazz, from Bach to Bernstein, from Mozart to Mancini. French jazz accordionist has just completed a series of concerts in the USA with the Tango Jazz Orchestra. Still in the USA, he performs in October as follows: October 11th – with the Cristina Pato Quartet, Weis Center for the Performing Arts, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania October 19th – with the Cleveland Ballet Cleveland, Ohio Playhouse Square, Ohio October 20th, 1pm and 7pm – with the Cleveland Ballet Cleveland, Ohio Playhouse Square October 22nd – with the Emilio Solla Tango Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy’s Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York French-born Julien Labro was 9 years old when he saw a televised accordion performance and knew he wanted to play. His parents rented him an accordion, and signed him up for lessons. He quickly mastered the instrument, earning him spots in competitions across Europe. In the years since, Labro performed at festivals and venues in Europe, North America, the Middle East and South America. He has accompanied and collaborated with groups and artists such as Hot Club of Detroit, Brazilian pianist Joao Donato, Argentinean composer and pianist Fernando Otero and big band leader Maria Schneider. Accordionist Maurizio Minardi performs in concert with vocalist Giorgia Mancio at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, Soho, London, on Thursday October 11th. Doors: 6.30pm, concert starts at 8.30pm. Maurizio Minardi, now based in Paris, will be back in London where he lived for a number of years and was very active on the London music scene. Award-winning vocalist/lyricist/producer Georgia Mancio explores her European and Latin American heritage with some major players from the jazz and world music scenes: Italian accordionist/composer/pianist Maurizio Minardi, improvising cellist Shirley Smart, flute virtuoso Gareth Lockrane and seven-string guitarist/composer Luiz Morais. An uplifting repertoire celebrating language, diversity and internationalism beautifully performed in a variety of musical combinations. Maurizio Minardi has released 9 studio albums and performed with Antonio Forcione, Carmen Souza, Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, Simone Zanchini, Gabrielle Ducomble, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Brandon Allen. The Lilliput series by Ivano Battiston is not an accordion method but a collection of small musical forms, divided into five volumes, inspired by the Mikrokosmos by Béla Bartók and composed with the following didactic intents: - offer musical material - to the accordionist with a single note instrument - from the very first lessons up to the thresholds of a medium level preparation (fifth year of study); - bring the scholar closer to most musical forms and to a heterogeneous sound world; - lead the young accordionist towards a gradual exploration of the instrument, through an active participation in the problems of musical interpretation; - increase instrumental skills through learning based on the increase in the number of sounds; - introduce the scholar to the orchestral dimension of the accordion, also creating compositions inspired by the characteristics of the other musical instruments.
