Editors Note: Accordions Worldwide 14th Anniversary

Rob Howard, Editor, Weekly NewsTo celebrate the 14th anniversary of Accordions Worldwide, we have made a redesign of most sites and published these updated sites in the last few days.

We hope you find the new design more spacious, easier to navigate and more enjoyable to read.

Also, we have dipped into the news from November 8th 1996, and the item selected is a humorous true story from the Austrian TV news about a farmer who discovered that his cows yielded more milk yield when he played folk music on his accordion.

This item was certainly different to everything else in the news that week. I wonder if he is still playing to his cows?

Coupe Mondiale International Competition for Digital Accordion - Croatia

Coupe Mondiale Digital Accordion Category sponsored by Roland graphic
2010 Digital category winner Pavel Janas (Poland)The Coupe Mondiale International Competition for Digital Accordion category sponsored by Roland was held for the second year with great success. The excellent level of performance and the audience enjoyment vindicated the decision to add this Coupe Mondiale category two years ago.

Six competed in the 2nd CIA International Competition for Digital Accordion. Three contestants qualified from their home countries, while three contestants were sponsored by Roland Europe after competing in the 4th Roland Digital Accordion Competition in Rome. Roland also sponsored the prize money for this category in support of digital accordion technology. Online 2010 Digital Category Report

The contestants peformed an enormously diverse range of music and the jury marks were in a close range with individual jury members placing 4 different candidates first. Picture left, is winner Pavel Janas (Poland). To conclude the event, Roland presented two of their most renowned artists, Sergio Scappini from Italy and Ludovic Beier from France.

This new competition category is showing very exciting future promise and I am confident, more countries will include the Digital Accordion category in their national Coupe Mondiale qualifications for the 2011 Coupe Mondiale.

Classic CD: ‘An Island Heritage’, by Iain McLachlan, Scotland – UK

Iain McLachlanIain MacLachlan (1928-95) was a 3-row diatonic button accordionist and composer from the Highlands of Scotland who achieved lasting fame as the composer of the haunting and beautiful melody ‘The Dark Island’. Originally composed in 1958 as a pipe lament for a local doctor under the title ‘Dr. Mackay's Farewell to Creagorry’, the tune later achieved worldwide popularity when it was used by BBC television as the theme for the series thriller ‘The Dark Island’, filmed on the island of Uist in the Outer Hebrides in 1963. Countless recordings of this tune have since appeared, but no one played the tune better than Iain MacLachlan himself.

On the re-released CD ‘An Island Heritage’, Iain McLachlan's music comes as fresh as the sea breezes wafting over the Uist machair - Highland and Gaelic as his island heritage. Iain, from Benbecula in the Western Isles, played the accordion, melodeon and fiddle, and is joined by Calum Iain MacCorquodale on accordion and fiddle, and by Calum Campbell on goose and jaws harp. The CD includes the players in various combinations, peforming marches, strathspeys, jigs, reels, and hornpipes. Iain McLachlan's accordion solo performance of ‘The Dark Island’ is, of course, the highlight.

‘14 Years Ago’ – Accordions on the Television, Linz - Austria

The following humorous article appeared 14 years ago on Accordions Worldwide, then known as ‘The Squeeze’, published on November 8th 1996…

ACCORDION ON THE TELEVISION
As heard on CNN Broadcast, 26th October

Joseph Kerschbaumer, a farmer from Linz in northern Austria, has found a new way of getting a better milk yield from his cows, by playing traditional Austrian folk music on his accordion!! He says by doing this he can get up to two more litres per cow, because they are stimulated milk is released a lot easier.

He says the cows enjoy most music, but the they have a preference for traditional Austrian polkas. He explains they get a glaze in their eyes, and become curious, and have fun.

Joseph's children are following in their father's footsteps. His six year old son Oliver practices his accordion to the pigs. They seem to find it fun also. It will be interesting to hear whether or not these pigs will produce better tasting pork!!

The announcer of this item even ended with the pun "The Sound of Mooosic!!"
