Editors Note - World Accordion Day

Rob HowardSaturday May 6th marks World Accordion Day, and if you click on this link 2017WAD you will see so many events worldwide celebrating that notable day in 1829 when the accordion was patented by Cyrllius Demien (often anglicised as Cyril Damien) in Vienna, Austria.

Demien was only one of several at that time who were experimenting with reeds to produce early designs of accordions, but his first patent is widely acknowledged as the accordion’s ‘official birthday’.

The accordion has come a long way since the early 19th Century, and it has adapted very well to many international musical styles and genres.

The players and enthusiasts of today, now have a rich heritage to look back upon, and we owe a debt of thanks to the efforts and dedication of Demien and the other early pioneers of the accordion. A happy World Accordion Day to you all!
