BREAKING NEWS: Mario Moreschi Passes Away, Castelfidardo - Italyby Accordions Worldwide |
 With deep sadness, AWW regrets to announce the death last night (10th August during the night), after a short illness of Mario Moreschi. He was 65 years.Mario was a founder member of the Pasco company and grandson of Giuseppe Moreschi. The Moreschi accordion celebrated its centenary last year. Picture right: Mario Moreschi at the Pasco Italia / Paolo Soprani stand at the Frankfurt Musik Messe in March 2011. He leaves a wife Daniela, a daughter Martina and son Michele. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. The funeral will be on Saturday morning, 13 August, in Castlefidardo. |

 1950’s Piazzolla works being recovered is an unexpected and exciting reality. These newly recovered works will have their first modern performance at the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Concert with bandoneonist Lothar Hensel at the Cape Town City Hall, South Africa, on August 11th 2011.“This orchestral material was considered lost and it is a sensation, bringing these works back to the concert stage” says Lothar Hensel. “In the fifties Astor Piazzolla received a stipendium to study in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. During his time in Paris he was extremely keen to experiment as well as being productive. He composed a number of wonderful titles for bandoneon and chamber orchestra. Titles that evoke 'the Paris' of the 1950s include ‘Chau Paris’, ‘Sens unique’, ‘S.V.P. (s'il vous plait)’, ‘Picasso’, and ‘Rio Sena’”. Lothar Hensel wrote “I recovered an old vinyl record and because the music score was not available, I wrote out the music by listening to the recording. In December I'll produce it together with the broadcasting orchestra Cologne WDR”. German-born Lothar Hensel has studied in Buenos Aires and Paris with famous tango musicians, amongst them Juan José Mosalini, Dino Saluzzi and Nestor Marconi. With his new group ‘Tango Fusión’ he fills concert halls around the world with classical music lovers as well as aficionados of tango dance. |

In the state of Sao Paulo the musician had his first solo concert, presenting a repertoire that caught the attention, most notably the classic ‘Dizzy Fingers’, by Zez Confrey, and an extraordinary performance of ‘Capriccio 24 in A minor’ by Niccolò Paganini. The next performances included concerts at the Casa Brasileira Museum (on July 10th), Ordem dos Músicos do Brasil Auditorium (July 12th), and Araraquara city, at SESC Araraquara (July 21st) as a special guest at a concert starring Oswaldinho do Acordeon, one of Brazil’s best known and accomplished accordionists. On July 24th in Espírito Santo state , Mirco Patarini performed at Domingos Martins, one of the country’s most important Winter Festivals where he was guest soloist with the Orchestra Camerata SESI, under the baton of Leonardo David. Together with the orchestra, Mirco performed music by Astor Piazzolla, including ‘Tres Tangos’, ‘Oblivion’, and ‘Por Una Cabeza’. In addition to his concerts, Mirco also gave interviews to some radio stations and TV channels, including Trianon radio (Sao Paulo) and TV Ara (Araraquara city – Sao Paulo). Theatrical Show ‘The Accordionist’ – What Next?, London – UKby Rob Howard |
 ‘The Accordionist’, the acclaimed new music theatre show written and performed by accordionist Romano Viazzani and singer Bethany Jameson finished touring in April 2011.Reviewers and audiences alike loved the music, which was half Edith Piaf classics (‘Milord’, ‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’, ‘La Vie En Rose’, ‘Padam, Padam’, ‘La Foule’, and ‘L’Accordéoniste’) and half new songs, including the showstopper ‘Just Her Younger Man’ and the heart wrenching ‘Life Story’ and ‘Separation’. The music from ‘The Accordionist’, recorded by Romano Viazzani and Bethany, has been released, and well received. Romano and Bethany are now collaborating with the experienced and highly successful dramatist John Foster, whose screenplay credits on TV and the theatre in the UK are impressive. They are developing ‘The Accordionist’ further, ready for a second tour next year. A rehearsed reading of the first scene at Salisbury Arts Centre on July 17th showed the potential of the piece to a highly appreciative audience. | On September 23rd the duo Una Sinistra - Yulia Amerikova and Alexander Selivanov - will perform a concert during the 36th Castelfidardo Premio Concorso & Festival Internazionale Fisarmonica in Italy. Una Sinistra has won international competitions and performed concerts in many countries to high acclaim. Alexander Selivanov and Yulia Amerikova are regular participants in many musical events such as the Moscow International Accordion Festival ‘Bayan and Bayanists’, ‘Sata Hame Soi’ (Finland), ‘Spoleto Spring Festival’ (Italy), ‘Young Talents of Russia’, ‘Rendezvous...’ (Moscow), etc. They have judged internationally at the Coupe Mondiale and have made concerts and master classes in a lot of cities in Russia as well as Italy, Finland, Slovakia, and the Netherlands. The program includes original works written specially for the duo, transcriptions of symphonic classics, as well as a trio where they will be joined by famous Italian Mirco Patarini to form a trio for part of this concert. |

After two extremely close competitions just one mark separated the top three place getters in the USA National Roland V-Accordion Festival Final, with Danielle Renzi from New England narrowly taking the top title from Gregory Fainshtein, who was awarded a special recognition of his performance with an Honored Performance Prize for his second place. Held at the Renaissance Orlando Hotel the competition was held in two categories Senior (age 18 and older) and Junior (age 17 and younger). Danielle won a trip to the International V-Accordion Festival to be held in Rome, Italy later in the year, the contestants who participated in the finals were as follows: Youth Division contestants were Brian Aucoin, Olivia Luey, Kassandra Patterson, Daniel Pavlotsky and Rachael Renzi, and in the Senior Division contestants were Gregory Fainshtein, Anthony Federici, Svetlana Ivanchenko, Danielle Renzi and Tatiana Semichastnova. Adjudicators for this competition were International Roland guest artist Sergio Scappini (Italy), Danilo Di Paolonicola (International Diatonic Artist), renowned Nashville Musician and former US Champion Jeff Lisenby and CIA Ambassador and accordionist Kevin Friedrich. The exciting competition was hosted by Chris Halon, Roland US Director of Product Management, who also interviewed each contestant at the conclusion of their performance allowing the audience to learn a little more about each of the young artists. Andy Banks (1948-2011), Birmingham – UKby Rob Howard |
 Andy Banks, Chairman and Treasurer and a founder member of the Birmingham-based Club Accord, died at his home in Handsworth last week at the age of 63. Born in Wick in the north of Scotland, but raised in the Midlands, Andy had a strong Brummie accent whilst always considering himself an exiled Scot.Largely self-taught, Andy played the Shand Morino 3-row diatonic button accordion, melodeon and English concertina, and played Scottish and English traditional music. When the late Malcolm Gee founded Club Accord in 1976, Andy was one of the first to join, and played at most of their concert evenings. He played in Moonstone, a ceilidh band, and for Blackadder Morris. A great admirer of Sir Jimmy Shand, Andy once actually had an accordion lesson from the great man. He tracked Sir Jimmy down to his house in Auchtermuchty by asking at a local petrol station and soon found himself in the middle of a master class! Andy had a great knowledge of Scottish accordionists, and was a devotee of the Hohner Shand Morino. He contributed an article about the origins of this iconic instrument to my first volume of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion’, which also included a biographical entry for him based on his long-term contribution to Club Accord. In this entry I commented: “Lots of people come and go as members of accordion clubs, but it is people such as Andy who are the real backbone due to an unstinting loyalty and interest.” The next meeting of Club Accord is on Monday August 8th, 7.30pm, which will feature a tribute to Andy Banks, with all players present playing through ‘The Dark Island’, one of Andy’s favourite tunes. | The K Trio performed Friday July 15th on the Gala Concert at the 2011 AAA Festival held in Charleston. The audience was treated to a delightful reunion performance by the world class K Trio who have travelled to many parts of the world, always impressing their audiences. The 2004 Coupe Mondiale report of a performance by the K Trio read: The K Trio delighted the Pontarlier audience with their program of light classics and were called back for an encore. The capacity audience were shown why The K Trio has been described as three world-class musicians with the technical precision of the Juilliard String Quartet and the universal appeal of the Boston Pops. The K Trio consists of AAA Virtuoso Champions and siblings, Julie Kasprzyk-Cardona, Walter Kasprzyk, and Mary Kasprzyk Tokarski. Their program included crowd pleaser "Clair De Lune" and their signature piece, "Casey Jones" as well as other beloved selections. The K Trio gave a wonderful performance in Charleston. Yes, they received a standing ovation, well deserved! They had not performed together in many years. CD's by Mary Tokarski and CD's by the K Trio are available online. |

| The Santa Maria Accordion Band, MD Marthese Busuttil Cassar, was invited to perform a concert of popular music to the general public in attendance for this year's Hal-Lija Day Soiree 2011. During this annual soiree, which was held on July 6th, the Hal-Lija Local Council honoured citizens from this medieval village situated in the centre of Malta, famous for its orange gardens from the Knights of St. John since 1530AD, and for its feast with the biggest fireworks display in Malta. The organisation of this year's soiree' was under Magda Magri Naudi, the council member responsible for culture, together with other council members, and compered by Susan Malvaney. |

 Seven-time Diatonic Accordion World Champion Danilo Di Paolonicola brought the house down in Orlando, Florida, where he took diatonic accordion performance to new heights mixing his dynamic artistry, extraordinary technical capability and the innovative features of the new Roland FR18. Appearing at the Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) Festival as an International Guest artist, Danilo’s appearance was made possible by Roland-USA, as he began a tour through parts of the United States promoting the Roland FR18 Diatonic Accordion. Picture left, top: Danilo Di Paolonicola Workshop Picture left, middle: 2007 Grammy nominee Alex Meixner in Concert, USA Picture left, lower: Danilo Di Paolonicola, 7 Time World Diatonic Champion in Concert Danilo began learning the diatonic accordion at the age of six and immediately distinguished himself as a precocious talent, going on to win an incredible seven "World Champion" titles on the Diatonic Accordion, as well as numerous national and international competitions. Among the many competitions won, Danilo in 2007 with his group "Ethnic Project" won the competition for world's most important jazz accordion "Premio Città di Castelfidardo" and again in the same year with his band, also won the "Premio Stefano Bizzarri" where he had the honor to open the gala concert of Richard Galliano. Danilo studied jazz and accordion Varietè with Renzo Ruggieri, where he attended advanced courses at the Berklee Shcool in Perugia (Umbria Jazz). He has given concerts in Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Croatia, Holland, Hungary, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the USA. Also appearing on Diatonic accordion courtesy of Roland-USA was America’s own 2007 Grammy nominee Alex Meixner who began his performing career began at age 6 with his two sisters and father in an ethnic folk ensemble. An extremely versatile musician, Alex performs expertly on Diatonic Accordion, Piano Accordion as well as several brass instruments. Alex has appeared at music festivals throughout the USA, concert performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, Sandy Duncan and his own jazz and ethnic ensembles; as well as over 50 recordings, Meixner has developed a unique musical mix that appeals to a wide cross-section of audiences. His talents in music and comedy were even featured on the Tonight Show on NBC in 2004. Most recently, his “Polka Freak Out” CD with Bubba Hernandez garnered a Grammy nomination in December, 2007. During the Festival, Danilo also presented some workshops highlighting the features of the FR18 Diatonic instrument. After leaving the ATG Festival in Orlando, Florida, the Diatonic team will head to Houston, San Antonio and other cities in Texas as part of their American Tour. ‘14 Years Ago’ – Joan Cochran Sommers Leads UMKC European Tourby Rob Howard |
 The UMKC Accordion Ensemble Concert Tour to Europe was indeed a great success. The 13 accordionists and 1 percussionist, directed by Joan Cochran Sommers, presented concerts in venues in the cities of Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Munich. All concerts were sold out, and in many cases extra chairs had to be brought in.Music performed included the following selections: Excerpts from ‘An American in Paris’ (Gershwin) Medley from ‘A Fiddler on the Roof’ (Bock & Harnick) ‘All That Jazz’ from ‘Chicago’ (Kander & Ebb) ‘Solina’ (J. Lisenby) ‘Prelude and Fugue in G, BWV 541’ (Bach) ‘Dance of the Comedians’ (Smetana) ‘Granada’ (Lara) ‘The Syncopated Clock’ (Anderson) ‘The Ragtime Dance’ (Joplin) Excerpts from ‘Capriccio Espagnol’ (Rimsky-Korsakov) Joan Sommers also conducted the UMKC group and the accordion orchestra from Maisach in a combined performance of ‘Rhapsodie Andalusia’ (Gotz). Professor Herbert Scheibenreif of Neunkirchen, Austria, assisted with the organisation of the UMKC concerts. |

 Accordionists João Gentil, from Portugal, and Alejandro Brittes, from Argentina, met in 2010 during the festival Encontro Mundial de Musicas de Acordeon held in Valledupar, Colombia. They began playing together, and uniquely combine Fado, Tango, Milonga, and Chamamé, the music of Portugal and Argentina, styles that are fuelled by passion and tradition. For their concerts this weekend, João Gentil and Alejandro Brittes are accompanied by André Elyv (7 string guitar), Lucas Rocha (7 string guitar) and Luis Formiga (percussion). The group consists of Aleksandar Nikolic (bandoneon/accordion), Ivana Nikolic (piano/vocal), Jovan Bogosavljevic (violin), Bogdan Pejic (electric guitar), and Ljubinko Lazic (double bass). | The 21st annual Cotati Accordion Festival will be held on August 20th and 21st in California. This festival, a non-profit making event, began in 1991 and since the has donated over $320,000 to the youth of the Cotati local community. The entertainment on offer is varied, including concerts and dances.
