‘Vivat, Bayan!’ Festival, Samara – Russiaby Rob Howard |
From April 24th to 26th 2013 are the final concerts of the international festival ‘Vivat, Bayan!’ which takes place in the Samara region. The first ‘wave’ of the festival took place in early February and introduced the fiery compositions of the Canadian ensemble ‘Quartetto Gelato’. In early March the virtuoso accordionist Boyan Jovanovic together with his trio performed with the program ‘Serbian Mosaic’. In late April, the audience will get a surprise – an instrumental ‘battle’ of duos ‘1+1’ (Russia) and ‘Klezmer Reloaded’ (Austria). The duo ‘1+1’ unites two great Russian musicians - Valery Semin and Dmitry Kalinin. They are well - known in many countries because of their virtuoso performance of cover versions of popular songs (rock and pop music, melodies from movies) to the accompaniment of accordion and balalaika. Within 3 years of being formed, the duo ‘Klezmer Reloaded’, Alexander Shevchenko (accordion) and Maciej Golebiovski (clarinet), had become an extraordinary team with its own style of performance. ‘Klezmer’ literally translated: ‘Kle’ as an instrument and ‘Zmer’ as a melody. Immigrants from Poland and Ukraine, they have lived in Austria for 13 years and have presented in their work mixing of different musical cultures. The international festival ‘Vivat, Bayan!’ has taken place in the Samara region for 11 years with great success. |

Enzo Toppano (1927-2013), NSW - Australiaby Rob Howard |
Veteran Australian accordionist Enzo Toppano has passed away at the age of 85, following a long period of illness. Of Italian parentage Enzo and his older brother Lou were the sons of an accordionist father, who passed on his knowledge and love of music to them. In the 1930s Lou became a highly successful professional accordionist, playing with all sorts of ensembles and shows, and in 1935 young Enzo followed him into the world of entertainment. By the time World War Two ended in 1945 Enzo had appeared in radio shows such as ‘The Youth Show’, ‘Out of the Bag’, and ‘The Sunny Side of Music Street’. He had also written the first of a series of technical articles on the accordion for the music magazine ‘Tempo’. In 1946 Enzo toured occupied Japan for six months with a troupe of Australian entertainers, and six tracks of Australian compositions were released under the title, ‘Enzo Toppano and his Rhythm’. The same year he led a cabaret band at Sydney’s Manhattan Restaurant and also did solo work. He later joined the State Theatre Orchestra as a member and featured soloist. In March 1949 he arrived in the UK for a three-year series of British and Continental engagements, which included many BBC radio broadcasts on the programmes ‘Variety Bandbox’ and ‘Without a Word’, and the BBC TV show, ‘Rooftop Rendezvouz’. Enzo worked in London with the bandleaders Geraldo, Stanley Black, Edmundo Ros, Ambrose, and with the likes of Gracie Fields, Petula Clarke, Max Bygraves, Julie Andrews, and Winifred Atwell. He met Adrian Dante and became a correspondent for the magazine ‘World Accordion Review’. In 1950 Enzo acted and played accordion in the film, ‘Prelude to Fame’. He also did many engagements in Italy and around Europe and, in Vienna, he came met the Australian soprano, violinist and actress, Peggy Mortimer, whom he married. Enzo and Peggy worked together as The Toppanos, becoming one of Australia’s most famous light entertainment acts, performing for nearly five decades. They had three children – Lorenzo, a trumpeter and composer, Peta, an actress, and Dean, a guitarist and drummer – and the family toured the world and recorded as The Travelling Toppanos. In Australia Enzo Toppano enjoyed a long and successful career as an accordionist, featuring on numerous radio and TV shows, and working extensively as a musical director in the theatre. In recent years he worked regularly as an accordion/bass duo with his son Dean. He also made several recordings for EMI, Nixa, and Melodisc. Peggy died in 2004. Enzo is survived by their children. |

Kevin Friedrich Debuts World’s First Kauri Accordion - New Zealandby Heather Masefield |
Kevin Friedrich realized his dream of producing the world’s first Kauri (New Zealand native tree) accordion when a joint project between New Zealand and Finland produced an instrument combining a Finnish folk accordion culture instrument with the magnificent giant and ancient Kauri tree of New Zealand. After shipping some of the rare wood to Finland, Artisan Aaro Luukinen (teacher of accordion making at the Ikaalinen College of Crafts and Design - IKATA) handcrafted three stunning instruments dubbed K1 (to be housed in Dargaville, New Zealand), K2 (for Ikaalinen, Finland) and K3 to be housed in New York. Aaro’s wife Henriikka designed the three grills for the instruments which were hand carved by Aaro and named as K1 – Birth, K2 – Departure and K3 – Growth. The unveiling took place on March 24 at a sold out concert at the Lighthouse Function center in Dargaville with the help of the Dargaville Primary School Kapa Haka Group and other musicians, to give the instrument a traditional Maori welcome home. The annual fundraising concert of the Dargaville museum featured Kevin with his many musician friends including acclaimed International vocalist Lionel Reekie as well as the debut performance of the Auckland Accordion Symphonietta under the direction of Lionel Reekie, The Dargaville Tamburitza Orchestra (picture above with Kevin Friedrich), Maiadean and Xena Martin (Violin and Cello), Nolene Osbaldiston (Piano), Pippa Howes and Mat Watson (Flute and Piano), Alexandra Reekie (Accordion), Take 6 Vocal Ensemble, the Ben Emmett Reunion Accordions Ensemble (BEA) and Barbara Adams (Narrator). The concert concluded with the Kaipara Orchestra combining all the instrumentalists and vocalists from the concert. The beautiful two row Kauri instrument, rich in sonority and showcasing the gorgeous blond and precious Kauri wood wowed the audience and will now be proudly featured as the entrance exhibit in the Dargaville Museum which also houses the rare and permanent ‘Accordion Gems’ accordion exhibition. The oldest living Kauri Tree, Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest) is found just north of Dargaville and stands some 2,500 years old! Picture left with Kevin and the Kauri accordion - hard to believe Kevin is over 6 ft tall when you see him pictured with this huge ancient kauri tree! The log from which the Kauri accordion was made, was one from the same forest, and after falling, possibly some hundreds of years ago, ended up washed out to the coast line beach, where it was found by Arthur Miach, who then donated the precious and protected wood to the Kauri accordion project. For more information about the Kauri Accordion project, please visit: www.accordions.com/kevin/n_kauriaccordion.htm |
