Anthony Mecca (1921-2015), Connecticut – USA

Anthony Mecca
Anthony MeccaOn Monday August 31st the accordion world lost one of its greats - Anthony Mecca. He was 94 years old. Remembered for his extraordinary performance on the stage of Carnegie Hall with his brother Dominic and the Charles Magnante Quartet on April 18th 1939 (the first time accordions were featured on this stage - with 3,000 in the audience), Tony was a very respected performer and accordion teacher his entire life.

Tony was born in Waterbury on January 9th 1921, son of the late William and Margaret Mecca. He was a graduate of Crosby High School’s Class of 1938, and served his country proudly during WWII with the U.S. Army. A career musician, he began playing the accordion at the age of 10, studying under performer and composer Joe Biviano in New York City.

When he was 18 years old, he performed at the first ever accordion concert at Carnegie Hall, along with his brother Dom. Their duet of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ brought down the house and earned them an encore.

While serving in the U.S. Army, he provided entertainment for the troops by playing the accordion and his hand held instrument. He eventually moved to New York City and became a teacher at Biviano’s Music School, as well as a staff musician for ABC, CBS, and NBC.

He continued to perform in concert and at clubs, and in the mid-1950s he opened his own music school in Westchester County, New York. He was Vice President of the American Accordionists’ Association, and during his years in New York he performed at many of their events in New York and other major cities around the country, including performances with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and Leonard Bernstein.

He provided background music for many Broadway musicals and operas, and recorded with artists, Andre Kostelanetz, Percy Faith and Mitch Miller. He recorded many albums with Joe Biviano, performed in the orchestras of Bobby Vinton, the Ed Sullivan Show, and the ‘Lucky Strike Hit Parade’.

In the early 1980s Tony and his wife Jeannette moved to Florida, yet he continued work as a musician, playing shows, private parties, and performed as a soloist with the local pops orchestra. In 2000 he accompanied Luciano Pavarotti during a performance with a Florida symphony orchestra. Following the death of his wife in 2013, Tony moved back to Connecticut.

Tony is survived by his son, William J. Mecca, and his sister, Katherine “Kay” Rocco. He was predeceased by his siblings Domenic, Leonard, Mildred, Antonio, and Leonardo.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wolcott View Manor, and St. Mary’s Hospital ICU and VITAS unit for the kind and compassion care given to Tony.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday September 5th, 11am, at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Connecticut, with full military honors.

Tribute Concert to Ilmar Kuljus and Surprise Anniversary, Spokane - USA

Ilmar posterOn August 21, 2015, twenty three accordionists and a percussionist gathered before a full house in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Spokane, WA, to play a concert in honor of Ilmar Kuljus and his life-time devotion to the accordion and to teaching the accordion.

The core of the orchestra consisted of the Spokane Accordion Ensemble who were joined for this event by several of Ilmar’s present and past accordion students. Ilmar was guest conductor for the evening.

After the concert, to the delighted surprise of the orchestra members and the audience, soloist Rev. Barry Smith announced that Ilmar would surely remember this August 21st forever, because it was about to become his anniversary.

He then asked Susan Graham to come forward and presided over a lovely wedding ceremony for Ilmar and Susan. Following the concert there was a champagne reception for all in attendance.

Musicians Spot Mistakes More Quickly and More Accurately - UK

St Andrews logoArticle written by James Vincent for The Independent, (UK newspaper) 30 September 2013.

New research has shown that individuals who play an instrument are more capable at identifying errors and correcting mistakes, and that these benefits apply to amateur musicians as well as professionals.

The study, led by Dr Ines Jentzsch for the University of St Andrews (Fife, UK) tested the cognitive abilities of musicians and non-musicians, with the research concluding that learning an instrument could “slow or even prevent” the mental decline associated with aging.

The research, published in the journal Neuropsychologia, draws particular attention to the skills learnt in musical performance. When playing pieces to an audience or to themselves musicians must demonstrate heightened awareness of their actions: continually monitoring their playing through auditory feedback and rapidly adjusting their movements to anticipate possible mistakes.

The psychological and mental benefits of learning to play an instrument have been shown in previous studies, with research highlighting musicians’ improved reaction times and their increased capacity to “inhibit task irrelevant information” (aka, to stay focused).

“[The results] suggest that higher levels of musical training might result in more efficient information processing in general (indicated by faster overall speed across tasks without accuracy tradeoff), and confirms earlier reports indicating a positive link between mental speed and musical ability,” says Dr Jentzsch.

The research is notable in that unlike previous studies it focuses on amateur rather than professional musicians, showing that even “moderate levels of musical activity” were beneficial to cognitive performance.

The study also drew attention to the diminishing support for children to learn to play in schools, noting that “in times of economic hardship, funds for music education are often amongst the first to be cut.”

“This is particularly worrying given both anecdotal and limited research evidence suggesting that music can have strong positive effects on our physical as well as psychological functioning.”

‘14 Years Ago’: Judge Orders Driver with Loud Stereo to Listen to Polka Music, September 2001

The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending September 7th 2001 included a report about a court judgment, whereby an inconsiderate driver, found guilty of noise pollution, was sentenced to listening to polka music by Frankie Yankovic. Was the accused enthused by polkas on the accordion? Who knows? As in ‘The Mikado’, “My object all sublime I shall achieve in time - To let the punishment fit the crime” – Gilbert and Sullivan.

Judge Orders Driver with Loud Stereo to Listen to Polka Music – USA

In Cambridge, Ohio this week, a man was sentenced to listen to four hours of polka music by Frankie Yankovic for driving with his windows rolled down and his truck's stereo blaring loud music. Judge John Nicholson who found him guilty of disorderly conduct, told the accused, that he had the choice of paying a US$100 fine or listening to the polka tunes - he chose the music!!!!!

The judge said, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. You may enjoy listening to your music, but many people do not want to hear your music".

The accused listened to the full four hours of the judges favourite Yankovic's hits, which included ‘Blue Skirt Waltz’, ‘Who Stole the Kishka’, and ‘Too Fat Polka’.

Two concerts, ‘Young Music Lovers’, take place on Sunday September 27th, 11am and 2pm, in the Chamber Music Hall, Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, Warsaw.

This season’s ‘Young Music Lovers’ concerts are a musical journey to the land of imagination. The voices of three instruments - the accordion, the guitar and the cello – are used to tell stories, paint colourful pictures of sound, and represent fascinating characters and places.

Among others, we will take a short trip to the Land of Ice, which all the children will certainly enjoy. Four excellent musicians invite the young audience to this encounter with music, full of adventures and surprises.

The performers are Joanna Freszel (soprano), Adam Misiak (cello), Jacek Malachowski (accordion), Adam Woch (guitar), and Urszula Oleksiak (concert introduction).
