Susanne and Veli Kujala World Premiere of “Bellows Symphony” – Finlandby AWW |
After 43 years of waiting, “Bellows Symphony” by Torbjörn Lundquist (1920-2000 - pictured right) will be premiered finally by Susanne and Veli Kujala (picture above) on November 6th, 2022 at the Helsinki Rock Church in Helsinki, Finland. The work was composed by Lundquist in 1979, but was considered to be too challenging at that time. It came to Veli Kujala’s attention by searching the official homepage of the composer maintained by the children of Lundquist. The concert program will also include music for two accordions by Joachim F. W. Schneider, Uljas Pulkkis and Jukka Tiensuu. Picture below: The unique Rock Church in Helsinki. |
FIA2022: “Festival Internacional de Acordeón” - Chileby AWW |
The 4th FIA2022, the “Festival Internacional de Acordeón” will be held in Talcahuano, Hualpén and Concepción in the Biobío region of Chile this month organised by the Entre Fuelles Foundation. The festival will include interviews, conferences, masterclasses, concerts and international guests with the aim of uniting the accordion community throughout Chile. Joaquín Muñoz Donoso, Director of FIA and President of the Foundation Entre Fuelles has announced they would like to listen to accordionist's stories and write the "History of Accordion of Chile”. Festival interviews so far will be online via social media with international interviewees confirmed: Francesca Pigini (Italy), Grayson Masefield (New Zealand), Julien Beautemps (France, picture below), Frederic Deschamps (France), Renzo Ruggieri (Italy), Volodymyr Kashuta (Ukraine) and Antonino De Luca (Italy, picture lower right) among others. Concerts will be held on November 10th, 11th and 12th at Teatro Dante in Talcahuano, which includes performances by Sebastian Bravo aka Seba Malo (Chile, picture lower left), Iñaki Alberdi (Spain), Seba Mufasa (Chile), Duo Diverso (accordionist Alma Petrauskait & pianist Kristina Jeganian from Lithuania, picture lower), Manuel Bustamante (Chile), Pato Pianola (Chile), Miguel Quinchamán (Chile), Yvonne Glur (Switzerland, picture top right) and Quintet Entre Fuelles. Talks will be held in the Dante Theater on different themes such as Manouche Music, Baroque Music, Brazilian Music and Luteria and master classes will be held in the Hualpén Cultural Center on professional technique. All activities will be held live in-person and streamed online. Entrance is free. |

As the American Accordionists' Association (AAA) continues to prioritize the health and safety of its members and event attendees, the association’s second virtual competition provided a stellar opportunity for accordionists of all ages and abilities to perform, compete, and improve. Competition organizer Frank Busso Jr. oversaw the event, with Mike Silvia providing technical and assistance for the contestants and adjudicators. This year’s entries were adjudicated by Frank Busso Sr., Joanna Darrow, Kevin Friedrich, Eddie Monteiro, and Mary Tokarski. This fund, managed by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (Connecticut), was established in 2018. It was created by Mary Tokarski to honor her late husband Frank, who lovingly supported her music through the decades, and for her to give young people the ability to “experience the enrichment and the joy that comes from making music.” The AAA thanks Mary for this appreciated ongoing legacy. |

Video: Mirco Patarini performing Il Bosco della Musica, a composition by highly regarded Roberto Molinelli of Italy. Enjoy The very well received performance took place at the Prague Conservatory in Czech Republic on 28th October 2022. Mirco Patarini has performed extensively around the world in more than 69 countries, performing a wide range of genre from classical repertoire to modern music, from solo performances to concerts for accordion and orchestra and with groups. Since 2017 Mirco Patarini has been the President of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA). Roberto Molinelli composed this original piece for solo Accordion, string orchestra and percussions, specifically for the PIF of Castelfidardo. The title is taken from the name, “Il Bosco della Musica”, of the artistic fountain designed by Tonino Guerra which is located in the gardens of Porta Marina in Castelfidardo. |

The Romano Viazzani Ensemble will perform two concerts at the Royal Opera House in London, England this month as part of the “Family Sundays” concert series. The Sunday sessions have the theme “Heroes and Villains” and the initiative by The Royal Opera House aims to make music more accessible to families with children. Suitable for all, but activities are designed for families with children aged three to ten. Romano Viazzani will play a solo tango repertoire and with his ensemble on November 6th and 20th, 2022. The Dargaville Museum which houses the superb Accordion Gems by Kevin Friedrich ... A Master Collection of Accordions through Time... is also the venue of the Kevin Friedrich and Friends 2022 Christmas Concert It is with real excitement that the Dargaville Museum announces the resumption of the popular fundraising concert series that have so often filled the Dargaville Museum Function Center to capacity. "Christmas Joy" will be held on Sunday December 4th at 1:00 PM and will once again bring our community and guests together for a magnificent and entertaining afternoon of music and friendship. This family variety holiday show hosted by Kevin Friedrich, the concert will feature Holiday favorites, a few sing-along songs and some surprises as presented by an array of artists including: North Shore Accordion Orchestra (conducted by Heather Masefield and Christine Johnstone) with members including Grayson Masefield, Maurice Jones, Lian Jones and Kevin Friedrich; Lionel Reekie (vocalist and accordionist), Alanah & Maurice Jones (vocalist), Jone Yelcich (vocalist), Rivertown Singers and Take 6 (choir), Thomas Koloi (piano and vocals),Sonja Whitehouse as soloist and with her Kaipara Ensemble, Ros Gilmour (vocalist), Linda Emmett Litt (percussion) and more. Concert organiser Margaret Tier has been busy scheduling rehearsals and reports that all is on track for another outstanding community event showcasing an impressive lineup of talented performers. The Dargaville Museum hosts the only public accordion exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere “Accordion Gems, A Master Collection of Accordions Through Time”. Established and curated by Kevin Friedrich, the 150 instruments on display showcase the fascinating evolution of the instrument over its nearly 200 year history. XIX Moscow International Festival "Harmonica - the Soul of Russia" - Russiaby Arseniy Strokovskiy |
The XIX Moscow International Festival "Harmonica - the Soul of Russia" will be held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Martinovich Mirek, a highly regarded teacher, author and recipient of many awards in Russia. He is perhaps most famous as the founder of the Museum of Russian Harmonica in Moscow and creator of this festival. The festival program will take place from November 17th to November 21st, 2022. It will include five concerts and the Round Table, the theme of which is the creative heritage of Professor Alfred Martinovich Mirek. Festival concerts will be held at three concert venues as follows: • November 17th at 7pm - Grand opening concert in the Great Concert Hall of the State Budgetary Institution of Culture of Moscow "Memorial Museum of A.N. Skryabin". • November 18th at 4pm - Round table dedicated to the creative heritage of Professor Alfred Martinovich Mirek in the Concert Hall at the Museum of Russian Harmonica A. Mirek. Free admission • November 18th at 7pm - Concert "Magic Accordion" in the Concert Hall at the Museum of Russian Harmonica A. Mirek. • November 19th at 2.30pm - Concert "Parade of Virtuosos" in the Concert Hall at the Museum of Russian Harmonica A. Mirek). • November 20th at 2.30pm - Concert "Variety Kaleidoscope" in the Concert Hall at the Museum of Russian Harmonica A. Mirek. • November 21st - Birthday of Professor A.M. Mirek The final gala concert of the festival will be held in the Chamber Concert Hall at the International House of Music. The final Gala concert will be held in two parts of 60 minutes each. Famous Russian musicians on the bayan, accordion and various types of harmonicas will perform popular Russian folk melodies, masterpieces of world classics and also feature jazz melodies in original arrangements. The performance of the artists will be accompanied by a video about the life, work and cultural heritage of Professor A.M. Mirek. As the 2021 Gold Medalist for the Keyboard Prize at the Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Annual Music Competition, Ryan Corbett presented a Recital in London, England on November 1st, to a capacity audience. Born in Glasgow, Ryan Corbett is a classical accordionist who has been described as “one of Scotland’s most exciting young musicians” (The Scotsman). A graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland studying with Djordje Gajic, Ryan is a prize winner of numerous national and International competitions. Showcasing his exceptional technical command combined with rich musicianship and dynamic stagecraft, Ryan performed Prelude and Fugue in a minor (BWV 543) by Bach; Sonatas in F Major (K107) and D Major (K97) by Scarlatti; Sonata Op. 13 by Nagaev; Romance in F minor, Op. 5 by Tchaikovsky; Etude on the theme Chiquillin de Bachin by Piazzolla by Angelis and Caprice Espagnol, Op. 37 by Moszkowski. ROSL takes pride in helping launch the careers of their young musicians by offering many performance opportunities at major venues such as Wigmore Hall in London and has established relationships with many leading national and overseas music Festivals. Montsalvat’s expression of interest is open to professional performers and ensembles who would like to present a concert in the Barn Gallery, Upper Gallery or Bluestone Chapel at Montsalvat. Joseph Natoli has announced that his new project, JANPress Master Classes, will commence with virtual Zoom sessions on November 7th, 2022 at 7pm EST. Each session will be 90 minutes and will occur twice a month. The second session will be held on November 21st, 2022 and continue accordingly on the first and third Monday of each month. The Master Classes will have a very diverse and detailed curriculum, with each session doing deep dive studies on various topics, followed by applied knowledge assignments. Additionally, there will be focus on subject matter that the subscribers specifically want to cover for personal musical growth while using planned and requested curriculum materials to benefit everyone. JANPress Master Classes won't be specializing in just one area of musical interest. A wide variety of topics will be presented, and this will be as close to a college course in a music degree program as possible, yet presented in a relaxed fashion at each attendee's level and speed for the most efficient and complete knowledge share. Each session will be amplified and enhanced by an assignment that follows our LEARN acronym (which stands for Listen, Experiment, Apply, Repeat, Normalize). The topics in each session aim to greatly enhance your musical understanding on widely diverse subjects including all aspects of performance, theory, chord progressions, composition, arranging, ensemble performing, recording, music notation, music & accordion history, music technology and much more. The 2022 Polka Hall of Fame Awards Show will pay tribute to well-known polka achievers with three days of dancing and a gala, big-band stage show at the Holiday Inn Cleveland South in Independence, Ohio, USA from November 25th to 27th, 2022. Hosted by the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame (the country’s only polka museum), the Awards Show is the highlight of the 58th Thanksgiving Polka Weekend. The Polka Music Awards spectacular is a grand salute to the newest names entering the Polka Hall of Fame. Lifetime achievers are bandleader Joe Kusar, musicians Bill Srnick Sr. and Rudy Kershishnik, plus the Penn Ohio Polka Pals social group. The Board of Trustees adds six names to the Polka Hall of Fame Honor Roll, Bill Bevec, Al Hreno, Eddie Korosa Jr., Bill Srnick Jr., and Chris and Gary Byndas. Two beloved All-Time Cleveland-Style Hits were also chosen by Polka Hall of Fame members. “The Little Café Waltz” and “Smile, Sweetheart, Smile” were early recordings by the late Cleveland bandleaders, Johnny Pecon and Frank Yankovic, America’s Polka King. The weekend is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Enjoy three days of music and dancing with top Cleveland-Style and Slovenian polka bands and performers. Featured entertainers include include Grammy-winners Walter Ostanek and Joey Miskulin, plus Hall of Famers Del Sinchak and Jeff and John Pecon, along with Garrett Tatano, Bob Zolka, Klancnik and Friends, and Linda Lee Brown.
