Le 6 mai, c’est le World Accordion Day et à Accordions Worldwide, nous savons que nombre d’entre vous ont prévu des évènements pour célébrer l’avènement de notre instrument favori. C’est en effet le 6 mai 1829 que Cyrillius Demien (Cyril Damian) a déposé le brevet de son premier accordéon à Vienne, Autriche, provoquant ce qui devint vite une « accordéonmania » planétaire. Il est stupéfiant de voir comment l’accordéon, comme un caméléon, s’est parfaitement adapté à un grand nombre de genres et de sous-genres musicaux à travers le monde. Il est joué pareillement par des jeunes et des moins jeunes sur tous les continents habités et son répertoire et son utilisation continuent à se déveloper et à réjouir partout le public. Que cela dure longtemps ! |

Le World Accordion Day, une initiative de la Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) se déroule du dimanche 5 mai 8:00 h au lundi 6 mai 8:00 h (heure française), diffusé sur le Deschamps Channel et les sites du World Accordion Day. Le World Accordion Day sera co-présenté par Frédéric Deschamps et Grayson Masefield assistés du Président de la CIA Raymond Bodell et de son Directeur Mike Rossi. Seront diffusés des récitals d’accordéon, des interviews, et des temps forts de l’année écoulée dans de nombreux pays, avec la participation d’ accordéonistes célèbres, d’associations nationales, de manufacturiers, d’auteurs, de compositeurs, d’arrangeurs et de professeurs du monde entier. Quel formidable week end ce fut, convivial, amical et plein de merveilleuse musique jouée par les candidats de cette 68ème année du concours national ! Parmi les succès remarquables au concours, citons Egidio Apuzzo (Italie, photo de gauche avec Raymond Bodell), gagnant de la catégorie soliste international, Aileen Sweeney (Senior Recital), les multiples gagnants Bodell (photo ci-dessous) furent Alexander (6 catégories), Roseanna (3), Raymond (2) et Annalize (3). Dans le concours national Roland V-Accordéon, le vainqueur en sénior fut Thom Hardaker et le gagnant en junior, Craig Hart. Le Brian Laurie Paisley Academy Orchestra (MD Brian Laurie) donna de superbes concerts d’ensemble. Les résultats complets du championnat national 2013 sont consultables sur le site de la NAO. Durant le festival, le célèbre professeur et directeur musical Jenny Neal, de Colchester, fut honoré du NAO Merit Award, pour son dévouement au service de l’accordéon durant de nombreuses années. Bob Downer, de Bournmouth reçut le NAO Associate Award. Les Championnats NAO –Royaume-Uni 2014 se tiendront à nouveau à l’Adelphi Hôtel de Liverpool, du 25 au 27 avril. |
4ème festival et concours international d’accordéon 2013 – Bosnie Herzégovineby Harley Jones |
Du 23 au 27 avril s’est tenu à Sarajevo, Bosnie Herzégovine, le Festival d’Accordéon. Il était organisé par le vénérable Dr Zoran Rakic. Cet évènement est devenu l’un des plus grands concours d’accordéon classique soliste avec plus de 240 inscrits cette année, répartis en 9 catégories de moins de 10 ans à plus de 20 ans. Les candidats venaient de Bosnie Herzégovine, Serbie, Monténégro, Croatie, Macédoine, Russie et Ukraine. Il y eut de nombreux concerts et évènements chaque soir, présentant les différents styles de musique pour l’accordéon. Après une conférence de presse le matin, débutait le premier tour du classique sénior avec plus de 40 inscrits dans cette catégorie. Le concert d’ouverture proposait un spectacle d’un choeur dirigé par Rade Radovic, un orchestre d’accordéons dirigé par Dusan Erak (photos ci-dessous) et un répertoire de variété par le multiple champion du Monde Grayson Masefield. Après le 3ème jour de compétition, le professeur Viacheslav Semionov donna une lecture à propos de l’origine et la philosophie de ses compositions et sur différentes interprétations. Le concert du soir fut donné par Kimmo Mattila (accordéon) et Aino Ojakoski (violon alto). Ils interprétérent un programme finnois et international de tango, prouvant combien ce style de musique a évolué en Finlande. Le vendredi, le professeur Ljubomir Lukic, fit une présentation des origines de l’accordéon, depuis ses racines chinoises (le Cheng) jusqu’aux accordéons d’aujourd’hui. L’orchestre régional de Belgorad (photo ci-dessous) donna un concert avec accordéon et de nombreux instruments russes traditionnels furent joués le vendredi soir. Samedi : après la fin des derniers tours du concours, la cérémonie de clôture eut lieu l’après-midi avec la remise des prix à tous les gagnants et lauréats. Accordion Exhibition and Meeting, Sümeg – Hungaryby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |
This year’s Sümeg Accordion Exhibition and Meeting took place at the Hotel Captain, Sümeg, Hungary, April 19th to 21st, sponsored by Scandalli Accordions of Castelfidardo, Italy, and Peter Moger (pictured left), maker of Petromaestro Accordions, of Keszthely, Hungary. There were exhibitions and demonstrations of Scandalli, Petromaestro, Moreschi, Paolo Soprani and E. Soprani accordions. During the festival visitors could test new accordions models like the Cromo VI Balkan, a model that designed and made especially for players from Balkan countries. Above is a video by Riders in the Sky, featuring accordionist Joey Miskulin, performing “Rawhide”, recorded in August 2012 at Durango, Colorado. On April 20th and 21st, the Veluzat family’s Melody Ranch welcomed fans of western art, movies, poetry and culture to the 20th Annual Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival. The event, held in the Santa Clarita High School Auditorium, is the one chance the general public has each year to visit Southern California’s finest western movie town. The festival includes western re-enactments, a cowboy poetry competition, and lots of music. The focus of the festival is cowboy music, and the acts included I was privileged to hear perform that afternoon were Native American musician Tracy Lee Nelson, The Band of the California Battalion, a recreation of a Union Civil War brass band, Baxter Black, Don Edwards, Hot Club of Cowtown, Texas accordionist/singer/songwriter Ginny Mac, The Saddle Cats, The Sons of the San Joaquin, and Riders in the Sky, featuring accordionist Joey Miskulin. |
Marco Lo Russo Award and Concert, Latina - Italyby Rob Howard |
Italian accordionist Marco Lo Russo received the Nino Cepollaro Award for services to music on May 1st in his home town of Latina in a ceremony during a festival. “It is a great honor for me to receive an award that underlines my commitment to our land”, said the maestro Marco Lo Russo, “I love to perform in Italy and even more so in our beautiful province and in my city, then to receive appreciation of a tangible award so fills me with joy." On Saturday May 4th, 6pm, at the piazza del Centro Commerciale, Morbella, Marco Lo Russo will perform during the presentation of a new book, ‘L’ottavo giorno’ (The Eighth Day), by the writer Lucia de Cristofaro. First V-Accordion Kids Orchestra Concert (REVAPO) - Austriaby Rob Howard |
On May 4th, the worlds first: "V-Accordion Kids Orchestra" will have their first performance at the REVAPO Concert, in Wagna, Austria. This is a band of young people with Roland V-Accordions and keyboards. This is part of the REVAPO aim to get more young people playng the accordion, to show what is possible with the Roland instruments and also to inspire younger players to use new techologies in concert. The Beijing Children's Palace Baidi Accordion Orchestra, superbly conducted by Chen Weiliang, is famous in Beijing, performing nearly always, to packed concert halls. ‘14 Years Ago’ – Frosini Society active in Scotland in 1999by Rob Howard |
The Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending May 6th 1999 included an item about workshops organized by the Frosini Society, and led by Swedish accordionist Lars Ek and Italian accordionist Roberto Enzo. The Frosini Society champions the cause of the music of Pietro Frosini, Guido and Pietro Deiro, and their contemporaries. Does the Frosini Society plan to do anything similar in 2013 to this very successful course held all those years ago? We would like to know. Frosini Society Workshop – Scotland Contributed by Gary Blair The Frosini Society held a ‘workshop’ weekend in Kelso, Scotland in April. Tutors included Lars Ek (Sweden) and Roberto Enzo (Scotland) who gave informative sessions on accordion techniques to a number of young and enthusiastic players. On Saturday night a gala concert was held featuring The Bill Sharp Accordion Orchestra, from Scotland, Lars Ek and Roberto Enzo. The audience of over 280 people were entertained to a wonderful variety of music. The UK Frosini Society plans to arrange other similar events in the future. |

The Kilfenora Ceili Band perform in concert on Sunday May 5th, 8pm, at the 19th ‘Fleadh by the Feale’, at Coláiste Ide agus Iosef Abbeyfeale, County Limerick. The Kilfenora, joined by guest musicians Sharon Howley (cello), Brian O'Grady (double bass), will be performing their Big Band show ‘Spraoi’. The concert also features Don Stiff (singer), the West Clare Set Dancers and World Champion dancer Michael Donnellan. The Kilfenora Ceili Band, Ireland’s longest established ceili band founded in 1909, features four fiddles (Eimear Howley, Sinéad Heagney, Anne Rynne, and Annemarie McCormack), two flutes (Anthony Quigney and Garry Shannon), concertina (Tim Collins), accordion (Claire Griffin), banjo (John Lynch), drums (Sean Griffin), and piano (Fintan McMahon). This year’s Summer Accordion Week takes place from July 20th to 27th at St Audries Bay, Somerset. Activities include Accordion Bands (Advanced/Intermediate/Beginners), Vintage Workshop, Scottish Workshop, French Accordion Circle, Composers Competition, Scottish Ceilidh Evening, Accordion Repairs, Accordion Tuition, Busking, and Trade Show. There’s also lots for non accordionists to do, including Guided Walks in the Quantock Hills, snooker, pool, bowls, putting, swimming, beach walks, darts, dancing, table tennis. In attendance, and doing much playing will be the inimitable Harry Husey. Beautiful scenery and camaraderie. Chalet or caravan accomodation - half board or self catering available.
