ATG 2012
ATG logoATG logoPhotos above: Top - 5 year old Nathan Troxell, Chinese Ensemble, Joan Sommers and Stas Venglevski, Soundscape Trio musicians: Madalynn and John Neu and Larry Miller from Denver, Colorado

The Accordionists and Teachers Guild, International (ATG) celebrated its 72nd Anniversary Competition and Festival in grand style in Lisle (Chicago), Illinois from July 25-29, 2012.

Attracting guests from as far a field as China, Canada, Austria and across the USA, the competition featured competitions, concerts, workshops, meetings, a trade show, the ATG Festival Orchestra and many social functions.

The late Frank Marocco was to have been the featured guest artist, however after his untimely passing away, the festival shifted its theme to pay tribute to this legendary Jazz accordionist.

Emmanuel Gasser (Canada) won the ATG Competition in Honor of Frank Marocco, while Board of Director Amy Jo Sawyer premiered her new composition ‘Three for Frank’ in his honor, and the ATG Festival Orchestra performed an outstanding new arrangement ‘Tribute to Frank’, a compilation of Frank Marocco compositions, arranged for accordion orchestra by a long time friend and work associate in the Los Angeles Music industry, ATG First Vice President Liz Finch.

Numerous other tributes were given to Frank, and the ATG continued with its original plan to induct Frank Marocco into the ATG Accordion Hall of Fame, which will now be awarded posthumously.

Guest artists included CIA Coupe Mondiale World Accordion Champion Alexander Sevastian (Canada), who received multiple standing ovations for his outstanding concert, Stas Venglevski (Milwaukee, WI), a popular performer throughout the USA, who delighted the audience by inviting Joan C. Sommers to join him for two of his pieces, one a comedy routine and the other a beautiful haunting Waltz.

Jazz accordionist Jeff Lisenby (Nashville, TN) was joined by several Chicago musicians and guest vocalist Alicia Baker (Roland artist from Oregon) for a performance of popular US TV/Show themes presented in Jazz style, who gave a breathtaking performance to highlight the Roland accordion including vocal selections.

In addition, the concerts featured Dr. Marko Petricic (Indiana University), The UMKC Accordion Chamber Ensemble (Joan C. Sommers, Joyce Davis, Betty Jo Simon, Ron Barrow and Kevin Friedrich from Kansas City, MO), the Gene Van Accordion Orchestra (from South Bend, IN, conducted by Gene Van), Betty Jo Simon (Midi Accordionist), Soundscape Trio (Madalynn and John Neu and Larry Miller from Denver, Colorado).

Workshops were presented on a variety of themes including Work as a Session Musician (Jeff Lisenby), Using your computer to Notate your Music (Liz Finch), Transcribing Organ Music for the Accordion (Dr. Marko Petricic), Life as a Concert Accordionist (Alexander Sevastian), The ATG Syllabus (Joan C. Sommers), Transcribing Piano Works for Accordion (Dr. Herbert Scheibenreif), Supplemental Music for Young Children and Teenagers (Gordon Kohl), Working with the Roland (Alicia Baker), Playing Well - Prevention and Biomechanics of Musician Injuries (Dr. Lynda Griffith).

The ATG was pleased to welcome several performers from neighboring accordion clubs and associations, including Esther Lanting and Heidi King (cello), Dick Tappan and Chuck Oprian, Rebecca Ratliff and Jessican Faltot Duo and Wilanna Vogel (Peoria Accordion Club, Tony Hermanek and Jerry Cigler (Chicago Accordion Club) Edward Smollen and Bruno Muras Representing the Polish American Accordion Association of Chicago and Donna Dee Ray, Gordon Kohl, both newly appointed members of the ATG Board of Directors.

One of the highlights of the festival is the annual ATG Festival Accordion Orchestra. This year was no exception, with the exciting addition of ANIMA, a renowned Youth Choir from Chicago joining the Festival Orchestra for a moving performance of Let There Be Peace on Earth conducted by ANIMA Musical Director Emily Ellsworth.

One of the world’s leading pedagogues in choral music, her choirs have performed all over the world. ANIMA means breath, life, soul, spirit and mind and reflects the Choir's mission to transform young lives through excellence in music education and choral singing. A world class youth choral organization, founded in 1964, their collaboration with the ATG Festival Orchestra added an exciting dimension for members who had the rare opportunity to work with both the choir and director Emily Ellsworth. Joan C. Sommers and Gene Van also directed the ATG Festival Orchestra.

The competitions featured a diverse array of winners from 5 year old Nathan Troxell who won the Standard Solo division, through to Bojan Cubra (Serbia) who won the ATG US Open Solo Championship. Emmanuel Gasser (Canada) who won numerous solo divisions including the ATG US Junior Solo Championship and the ATG Competition in memory of Frank Marocco and the Tanjing Angels Arts School Ensemble and the Tanjing Chamber Ensemble won the International Mixed Instrument Ensemble divisions.

The ATG will return to Chicago next summer to celebrate its 73rd Anniversary Competition and Festival with details to be announced very soon.

Sheng and Accordion Jam, Hu Jianbing and Dr. William Schimmel - USA

HU Jianbing (Chinese sheng) jams with Dr. William Schimmel (accordion) at Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City @ the evening concert for American Accordionists' Association (AAA)'s annual master class, Jul 29, 2012.

Member of Yo-yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and a virtuoso Sheng master who received his sheng education in China, Jianbing Hu excels in contemporary composition and improvisation. Dr. William Schimmel, world renowned composer/philosopher/accordionist, first jammed spontaneously with Jianbing Hu at Kennedy center in early 2000s (in the back stage while taking a break from the performance.)

After more than ten years of disconnection, they found each other again, and jammed in this formal setting for the last evening concert of the 2012 AAA master class. It was a REAL jam in the sense that they did not do any sort of preparation before hitting the keys/pipes.

All that Dr. Schimmel and Jianbing Hu agreed upon before the show started was: "let's do five minutes."

'The Great Morgani' Has 130 Costumes and 42 Accordions - USA

Excerpts of an article written by Courtney Buchanan of the Santa Cruz Patch newspaper.

Behind the crazy costumes of Santa Cruz's street performer "The Great Morgani" is a fashion lover and community representative.

Known as “The Great Morgani” by the Santa Cruz community, Frank Lima, 69, has been performing as an accordion extraordinaire for 15 years.

“People want to see the spectacle,” said Lima. “Oh what shoes is he wearing now? I have to create a fashion monster.” Playing the accordion to entertain others is Lima’s hobby and with 42 accordions, 130 costumes and over 1,200 songs, every performance is different.

One of Lima’s favorite parts of being a street performer is seeing the crowd react to his songs and his all-out costumes. Although they sometimes take up to 100 hours of work, Lima said, “My passion is the costumes. The music is very easy for me.”

Four years ago when Lima was performing, a 3-year-old girl named Emily showed up with a little accordion and started playing next to him. When her father asked Lima to come to Emily’s birthday party, he showed up to a room full of 4-year-olds with their own accordions. To this day Emily comes to perform with Lima.

He wrote a book titled 'The Great Morgani: The Creative Madness of a Middle-Aged Stock Broker Turned Street Musician' which provides an inside look into the street performer’s life and costume design.

-----------------------
Take a look at the inventive spaceman costume (picture left). The headpiece is constructed of two salad bowls, with a plastic cup on top, and a pink pom pom. If you look at the base of box, you will see the shoes, that Morgani was going to wear, standing by the box.. They are regular shoes, with plastic water glasses bolted onto the bottoms, but a little shakey!!! What incredible attention to detail with the costumes.

Morgani arrives in costume and, is a self contained acoustic show, requires no special staging, amplification or electricity. His costumes are all hand crafted and cover him from the feet to the top of the head, as well as the accordion itself. He performs on a compact portable stage. The stage is carefully crafted to match the costume and raises him about one and a half feet about the floor...so everyone gets a good view.

Pictures of other costumes below.

The Great Morgani is surely a unique one man accordion show!

'Accordomotion' player accordion by Rob Barker Organs - UK

The Accordomotion is an accordion that genuinely plays itself. Mounted on a circular base with everything self contained.

The air is supplied by an electric blower so the accordion inflates, an SD MIDI controller sends the music signals to hidden solenoids under the keys to move them up and down, all you need to do is sit back to watch and listen.

A 48 bass accordion will comfortably play 4 octave chromatic arrangements, whereas a 96 or 120 bass will handle almost anything.

Prices vary depending on the size and make of accordion used, you can even supply your own for us to bring to life!

‘14 Years Ago’ – AAA sponsored Master Class, then and now

Dr William SchimmelThe Accordions Worldwide news for August 7th 1998 featured a report by Kevin Friedrich about a recently held AAA sponsored Master Class in New York, organized and led by the highly accomplished Dr William Schimmel. The event that year was circus themed. This year’s event has just been held, with the intriguing title, ‘Redemption: The Radar off the Radar’. Once again, Dr Schimmel, aided and abetted by his dance wife Micki Goodman, has unstintingly and imaginatively to produce an event that appears to be unlike any other in its scope and inventiveness. We hope this year’s event was as successful as it promised to be.

ACCORDION CIRCUS IN THE BIG APPLE - USA
Contributed by Kevin Friedrich

Dr William Schimmel moderated a three-day series of workshops and concerts at what has become an annual affair, sponsored by the American Accordionists' Association.

Discussions centered on the significance of competitions and contests in the accordion world, and the need for versatility of the accordionist in New York, which regularly ranges from Carnegie Hall, Broadway/Off Broadway to Frozen Yogurt commercials.

A capacity audience was present at the Tenri Institute Theatre, in the Guggenheim Museum for a varied concert which included "The Lee & Bill Digital Circus" performing "The Vague Panther" (digital flute and accordion), Dr Schimmel giving a first accordion lesson to Ilona Vellios (who learnt popular Russian songs during the course of her 20 minute lesson) and "A Yiddish Festival of Song" performed by Schimmel and Paul Stein. The evening concluded with "The Rite of Fall" with Micki Goodman (dancer and choreographer) and Bill Schimmel.

Book signing with Marion Jacobsen, California – USA

Squeeze This Book CoverNew York-based author Marion Jacobsen will be visiting Smythe's Accordion Center, 2511 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612, to read excerpts from her book ‘Squeeze This: A Cultural History of the Accordion’ on Friday August 17th, 6-8pm. Smythe's Accordion Center will host her free book signing with a small party with refreshments. There will be acoustic performances by Rob Reich, Whiskey & Women, and Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic.

‘Squeeze This!: A Cultural History of the Accordion’ traces the evolution of the accordion in the USA, and its cultural significance over the course of the 20th Century. From the introduction of elaborately decorated European models imported onto the American vaudeville stage and the instrument's celebration by ethnic musical communities and mainstream audiences alike, to the accordion-infused pop paradies by the likes of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, Marion Jacobson considers the accordion's contradictory status as both an ‘outsider’ instrument and as a major force in popular music in the 20th Century.
