ATG Online Masterclass Serie mit Cory Pesaturo - USA

ATG Poster
Die Online-Meisterkursreihe der Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) im Oktober wird am 24. Oktober Cory Pesaturo vorstellen.

Video: Alessandro Mugnoz - Italy

Here is a small excerpt from the Educational Anthology of the "Basic Method for Diatonic Accordion" composed and performed by Alessandro Mugnoz.

The piece, almost a miniature "wordless romance" of rather romantic style, should stimulate young students - in addition to the independence of articulation of the two hands - to an expressive and "cantabile" interpretive approach.

The piece, while designed to enrich and enlarge the repertoire of the diatonic accordion (or rather "bitonic") is naturally suitable - and adaptable - for any other type of classical/traditional accordion ("unitonic").

8 bass diatonic accordion (Castagnari): Alessandro Mugnoz, 2010.

From the CD attached to the "Basic Method for Diatonic Accordion" (exercises and studies - technique - Educational Anthology) by Edgardo and Alessandro Mugnoz, Music Editions ARS Spoletium, 2010.

Adam Perry Performs with String Orchestra, Auckland – New Zealand

Due to Covid-19, the KBB Music Festival committee had to cancel this year’s annual festival in its usual format. However, instead they have organised an alternative program which supports the continuance of ensemble music in Auckland Secondary Schools.

The Auckland Secondary School’s Music Festival Trust was excited to announce the KBB 2020 Band & Orchestra Showcase, which offered participating schools a chance to present some of their planned 2020 repertoire to a wider audience.

Entering this festival, Auckland accordionist Adam Perry joined the 2020 St Kentigern Chamber Orchestra to perform “Oblivion” by Astor Piazzolla. “With all the disruptions to music programmes over the year, it is wonderful to see the school make the effort to get the kids playing and then recording it professionally.”

Adam Perry has represented New Zealand at the 2019 Coupe Mondiale in Shenzhen, China and is the NZAA 2019 South Pacific Junior Virtuoso Entertainment Champion.

Paddy Neary (1949 -2020), County Louth – Irish Republic

Paddy Nearyalbum coverPicture above right: Paddy Neary's LP cover.

Paddy Neary, from Ardee in County Louth (same town that produced Dermot O’Brien) began playing the piano at the age of four, and moved on to the accordion aged 11. One of his earliest and greatest inspirations was Toralf Tollefson, of whom Paddy commented “In an age when there were no sophisticated accordions, Tollefson could produce superb music, which I have yet to hear bettered”.

He studied music at University College, Dublin, and the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and also spent a three year period touring America and Germany with a showband. In Ireland he won competitions on both piano and accordion, and in 1977 won the All Ireland Championship. The adjudicator was Alex McArthur, then a well-known Scottish bandleader, who arranged for Paddy to undertake a ten dates tour of Box & Fiddle Clubs. Paddy was amazed at the response: “I couldn’t believe the appreciation for what I did and made up my mind that I wanted to move to Scotland where there were so many marvelous people who wanted to hear my music”.

In 1977 he relocated to the town of Auchterader in the Scottish Borders where he instantly became much in demand as guest at Box & Fiddle Clubs, concerts, and also demonstrating for Clinkscales. The following year he was the chief guest at the evening concert at the All Scotland Championships held in Perth.

In Scotland he soon switched to playing electronic accordions, and became one of the foremost exponents of its technology. He could use the electronic voices to paint musical pictures much as an artist could with oils on canvas, and his performances entranced audiences. In the late 1970s and 1980s Paddy made several albums using electronic accordions, and reviewers considered his recordings to be ahead of their time.

In the 1990s Paddy suffered a stroke that ended his performing career, and he returned to Ardee in Ireland. He passed away peacefully on September 23rd at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. Paddy is survived by wife June, sons David and Philip, and grand-daughters Sophia and Louise. RIP.

John Crawford (1925-2020), Scotland – UK

CD CoverJohn CrawfordJohn Crawford, from Freuchie, Fife, was one of Scotland’s real stalwarts of the accordion, a first class player, bandleader, composer, and an accordion technician and tuner. Born into a musical family, his father played the pipes, fiddle and melodeon, and his mother was a pianist. His brothers and sisters all played instruments, and Jimmy Shand was a frequent visitor to their home and a lifelong friend.

Young John played the melodeon, the fiddle and the pipes, and graduated to the piano accordion, at which he excelled. After leaving school he worked as an engineer, and played for dances in the evenings. He also began repairing accordions, and one of his first repairs was to a Wurlitzer accordion that was part of a fairground steam organ.

During World War Two John served in the army with REME, and by 1945 was stationed near Trossingen in southern Germany. He learned much about tuning and repairing from an accordion repairer who had worked for Hohner, and took this knowledge back home to Scotland.

John Crawford entered accordion competitions in the 1950s, culminating in winning the coveted All Scotland Accordion Championship at Perth in 1960 playing the march ‘Jim McBay’s Welcome’, the strathspey ‘Maggie Cameron’ and the reel ‘The Marchioness of Tullybardine’. The adjudicators that day were Ian Powrie and Bobby MacLeod.

He also composed several tunes in the Scottish dance idiom, such as ‘Bill Ewan’s Reel’, ‘The Bruntley Reel’, ‘Ian’s Reel’ (composed for friend and bandleader Ian McCallum), and a march ‘Freuchie’s March to Lords’ written to commemorate the success of the village cricket team.

In the 1970s John recorded an album for Thistle Records, but it was not until 1998 that the real John Crawford was to be heard at his best. His ‘Piping on the Box’ CD, complete with Crawford tartan design, showing that when it comes to pipe music John has few equals.

As a bandleader John Crawford did many BBC radio broadcasts plus some TV appearances. He recalled that his band would do a live broadcast and then go to play at a dance elsewhere later the same night. On one occasion he recalls having to play at a dance in the Assembly Rooms, Dumfries, after a broadcast and on the way home the band’s Ford car got stuck in a swollen ford and they had to put all the equipment on the roof of the car and push it out of the water. And just to compound the misery, John had to get home to Fife to start work at 7am the following morning.

Above all, John Crawford was renowned widely as a tuner and repairer par excellence, with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things to do with accordions. Accordionists and other accordion technicians frequently sought his advice or services, and he will be missed. RIP.

Gianni Mirizzi New Composition “Silent Day” - Italy

Gianni Mirizzi composed his new piece “Silent Day” during the Covid-19 lockdown. The piece was inspired by the fact that during the lockdown, he was at home on a day like many others (one of the many spent at home), punctuated by a new and strange monotony, by a succession of conflicting emotions and new habits.

Gianni says “Music is pure emotion and as such, once again, I wanted to underline the moment, the fear and the loneliness of those days, to then explode in a search for strength, hope, the desire to succeed. Even when you feel alone, the only actor of a show, you must remember that there is always a soundtrack to compose, note after note.”

AWAM New Hohner Echophon Exhibit – USA

AWAM banner
echophonA World of Accordions Museum (AWAM) are pleased to have acquired a Hohner Echophon which is on display in the museum’s Early Diatonics section. While the instrument is not extremely rare, it has eluded their acquisition until now.

AWAM say: “This model’s outstanding visual feature is the brass horn etched with “Echophon” that covers the treble pallets and issues overtones-modified, reinforced sounds. Other than a slightly enlarged size, the instrument is a conventional one-row button diatonic in the key of “C.”

It sports ten treble buttons, three bass buttons on the front of the bass hand-hold plus an air-button behind, and four banks of “Steel Bronze Reeds” in two octaves engaged by pull-stops. The solid wood body frame is attached to twelve bellows folds with two support frames, front and back metal bellows closures (entirely intact), and is ornamented with Ernst Hohner’s picture and logo imprinted on metal at each body-frame corner. An impressed D.R.P. 200625 is found on the bass plate. The instrument is faultlessly perfect.

According to German Accordion Museum curator Dr. Martin Haeffner’s book Ewig Jung Trotz Vieler Falten, the Echophon was manufactured in five advertised model variations 1907 to 1908.”
