poster Opening ConcertIn 2017, after running for 11 years the Victoria International Accordion Festival, the festival was expanded by changing dates, concept and name to become the World Accordion and Tango Festival. This year’s festival will be held from November 10 to 18, 2018.

As part of the 2018 Festival, Victoria and Oak Bay will be hosting the 68th Trophée Mondial international accordion competition. This event is held in a different country each year and this will be the first time in Canada. The BC Accordion and Tango Society was successful with the bid to host the Trophée Mondial in Victoria, largely due to the very successful 2013 Coupe Mondiale which was hosted in Victoria five years ago.

From November 10 to 15, 2018 some of the world's finest young accordion soloists and ensembles will demonstrate their talents and compete for prestigious prizes. The evening concerts will showcase superb musicians and much of the event will be available online.

The Gala Opening Concert on Nov 11, 2018 at the Dave Dunnet Theatre will feature acclaimed international accordion performers and previous winners of the Trophée Mondial, Jelena Milojevic (Canada), Tian Jianan (China) and Grayson Masefield (New Zealand) collaborating with the Civic Orchestra of Victoria.

During the World Accordion Conference, major international accordion manufacturers and vendors and industry professionals will exhibit their instruments, present numerous workshops and explore opportunities for expanding their businesses in British Columbia.

During the second Festival weekend (Nov. 16-18), the program will shift to tango music for another three days of world-class performances by international tango musicians and dance couples who will present their skills in workshops, dance lessons and famous milongas.

Gnesin RAM Faculty of Folk Instruments 70 Years Celebration - Russia

In the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the faculty of folk instruments of the Russian Academy of Music (RAM) a celebration concert took place in the full concert hall of the Gnesin Academy after a conference being held on the "Role of the faculty in the musical culture of the country“.

A significant event in the history of folk instrumental art was the creation of the first in the republic faculty and department of folk instruments at the Gnesin State Music and Pedagogical Institute in 1948. The head of the department (until 1963) was Alexander Ilyushin, a highly educated musician, performer, conductor, active propagandist and follower of the great musical and educational affairs of V. Andreev, Merited Artist of Russia.

During first years together with him worked in the department and faculty: Yu.N. Shishakov, V.G. Gorokhov, G.F. Zimin, S.P. Velikov, P.I. Alekseev, P.A. Gvozdev, A. P. Ivanov-Radkevich, S.S. Sakharov, M.A. Osokin, S.G. Delitsiyev, I.D. Druzhinin, N.L. Reznikov, O.M. Agarkov, A.E. Onegin, N.Y. Chaikin, A.B. Pozdnyakov, V.L Degtyarenko and other famous musicians.

The staff of the department had difficult creative tasks. The rapidly developing national instrumental performance and the ever-expanding system of primary, secondary and higher musical education needed hundreds of highly qualified teachers, performers, organizers and conductors of orchestras and ensembles, heads of departments and educational institutions. To the credit of the teachers of the department and its leader, the orientation was chosen to be correct: not a narrow instrumental specialization, but a wide, versatile profile of training future figures of folk instrumental art.

Hence, the complex construction of the curriculum of the faculty, which, along with a wide range of special subjects, included music-theoretical and general educational disciplines, as well as conducting of a folk orchestra. In a relatively short time, teachers of the department developed programs for all special courses of the curriculum, which served as the basis for opening faculties of folk instruments in musical universities of many large cities of Russia and other Union republics in the 1950s and 1960s.

It was precisely into music colleges and schools, philharmonic societies and concert organizations, into professional orchestral ensembles and ensembles that graduates of the first editions were distributed.

Starting from the first issues, the department of folk instruments of the institute, as a rule, was replenished with the most talented, active and well-trained students of the faculty. In 1953, the first graduates of the faculty were S.M. Kolobkov, A.A. Surkov, M.F. Rozhkov, A.Ya. Alexandrov.

The artistic biography of S.M. Kolobkov, who went from student to rector and deputy minister of culture of the Russian Federation: in all areas of his multifaceted activities - performer, conductor, teacher, scientist, public figure - SM Kolobkov achieved outstanding results. Working as an educator, he created a practical school of playing the accordion. Among his many students known in our country and abroad were performers - folk artists of Russia, professors: F.Lips, A.Sklyarov, Y.Dranga, merited artist of Russia, Y.Vostrelov.

At different periods, the department of folk instruments was headed by:
S.M. Kolobkov (1963-1966), Yu.N. Shishakov (1966-1974), Yu.T. Akimov (1974 - 1976), V.P. Kuzovlev (1976-1984), V.F. Belyakov (1984-1996). Since 1996, the Department of Folk Instruments has been headed by the People’s Artist of Russia, Professor F.R. Lips.

Every year, teachers of the department participate in the work of scientific conferences, seminars, pedagogical readings at the city, regional, state and international levels, delivering reports, lectures, master classes, creative reports on a wide range of problems of musical pedagogy, theory, methodology and performance, provide practical methodological assistance to teams of musical educational institutions of the country - universities, colleges and music schools.

In 2004, the department of folk instruments was divided into two independent departments: bayan and accordion - it was headed by Professor F.R. Lips and stringed folk instruments - headed by Professor A.A. Gorbachev.

Over the past decade, the department of bayan and accordion has performed a huge teaching and educational, scientific, methodical, concert, and musical and educational work. Most of the members of the department for many years successfully combined teaching and scientific and methodological work with concert activities.

Among the students of the Faculty of Specialization “Concert Performer” the following persons received honorary titles: People's Artists of the USSR - V.I. Fedoseyev, Yu.I. Kazakov, A.I. Poletaev; People's Artists of Russia - S.M. Kolobkov, A.N. Gus, V.F. Gridin, F.R. Lips, A.V. Sklyarov, V.N. Pomelnikov, V.A. Semyonov, V.G. Azov, A.V. Belyaev, Yu.P. Dranga, V.I. Ryabtsev, I.F. Oblikin, V.A. Korobko, L.K. Smirnov.

More than 100 pupils were awarded honorary titles of honored artists, artists and cultural workers of Russia, 30 were awarded professorships, more than 60 students were awarded academic titles, over 300 musicians won titles of all-Union, all-Russian and international competitions.

Over the years of its existence, teachers of the department have made a fundamental contribution to the history, theory and methodology of performing art, to the expansion of the concert and pedagogical repertoire for the bayan (accordion).

Books and articles, methods, textbooks, repertory collections and anthologies, as well as the fundamental work - Anthology of literature for the bayan in 10 parts of A.Ye. Onegin, P.A. Gvozdev, A.A. Surkov, Yu.T. Akimov, V.P. Kuzovlev, B.M. Egorov, M.I. Imkhanitsky, F.R. Lips, V.A. Semyonov was in many ways innovative for his time and today is the basis of theoretical thought in practical pedagogical activity.

Thanks to the increased performing level of musicians and creative contacts with Russia's largest composers, dozens of new highly artistic works for the bayan (accordion) were created by Vl. Solotaryov, A. Kusyakov, S. Gubaidulina, E. Denisov, A. Kholminov, R. Ledenyov, S. Berinsky, K. Volkov, E. Podgaits, M. Bronner, A. Zhurbin, T. Sergeyeva and others.

For many years, students from many countries have come to the department to receive education at a prestigious university bayanist with renowned professors.

Many dozens of graduates from the countries of the former Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Greece, France, Poland, Norway, Finland, Poland, China, North Korea, South Korea, etc. successfully work in secondary and higher educational institutions in their homeland. In turn, teachers of the department are often invited to conduct master classes in various countries.

The fact that F.R. Lips is Professor Emeritus at the Royal Academy of London, visiting professor at the Tianjin Conservatory (China), and also visiting professor at the Conservatory of Groningen (Netherlands) and at the Pula Academy of Music (Croatia) for a number of years; V.A. Semyonov is a visiting professor at the Shanghai Conservatory (China) tells about the recognition of the high pedagogical level of professors of the department.

Since 1989, the teachers of the department have been holding the annual international festival “Bayan and Bayanists”, whose initiator and artistic director is F.R. Lips. Over the past years, almost all outstanding musicians from different countries of Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, and China have performed at the festival. Along with the masters, the festival actively provides the stage for young laureates of various competitions.

Every 5 years within the framework of the festival, since 1990, the International Competition of Bayanists and Accordionists is held, the teachers of the department constantly work in the jury and the organizing committee. The past five international competitions have revealed a whole cohort of young and talented performers from Russia, Ukraine, Spain, France, Kazakhstan, China, Serbia and other countries.

On the initiative of the department All-Russian Day of the bayan, accordion and harmonica has been held in the Concert Hall of the Russian Gnesin Academy of Music since 2010. The initiative of the department was picked up in many regions of Russia, and now every third Saturday of March is celebratory for all lovers of the art of playing the bayan, accordion and harmonica in our country.

In recent years, young laureates of international competitions from among their graduates were invited to the department: M.S. Burlakov, A.V. Selivanov, A.A. Gataullin, S.V. Shmelkov, M.V. Vlasov, and also the candidate of art history V.V. Vasiliev, appointed to the post of dean of the faculty. Thus, at the department there is an optimal balance between the older, middle and young generations of teachers.

The Department of Bayan and Accordion of the Russian Gnesin Academyof Music Gnesin confidently looks to the future and prepares new creative plans on the real embodiment of a wide range of theoretical, practical and educational directions in their activities.

Lilliput I, II and III eBooks Released by Ivano Battiston - Italy

Ivano BattistonIn pdf format sent to you by email.
The Lilliput series by Ivano Battiston is not an accordion method but a collection of small musical forms, divided into five volumes, inspired by the Mikrokosmos by Béla Bartók and composed with the following didactic intents:

- offer musical material - to the accordionist with a single note instrument - from the very first lessons up to the thresholds of a medium level preparation (fifth year of study);
- bring the scholar closer to most musical forms and to a heterogeneous sound world;
- lead the young accordionist towards a gradual exploration of the instrument, through an active participation in the problems of musical interpretation;
- increase instrumental skills through learning based on the increase in the number of sounds;
- introduce the scholar to the orchestral dimension of the accordion, also creating compositions inspired by the characteristics of the other musical instruments.

The pieces can be played with any type of instrument provided with single notes.

Volumes II and III of Lilliput! are required for the accordion admission exam in Italian music high schools (Licei musicali).
