Guardian Newspaper Education Feature: 'Music graduates are more employable than you might think' - UK

Harry SlaterFrom an Education Feature Article by Harry Slater (picture right) dated 11th October 2013

With unique skills and a broad range of graduate jobs on offer, music students have better prospects than people imagine.

If you study medicine at university, chances are you'll become a doctor. For music students, it's less obvious what job you'll end up with… but it could be really fulfilling. The perception that options are narrow and jobs are few for music graduates needs to change.

It's wrongly assumed that when it comes to jobs, music students are confined to their field of study. In reality, music graduates go on to do a wide range of jobs in a variety of different industries.

Alumni surveys from the University of Nottingham show that music graduates are employed across a varied range of fields. As you might expect, a large proportion (50%) work in the creative industry, but the roles performed by graduates vary greatly.

Music grads work in publishing, editing, media production, broadcasting, and marketing. A number work with professional ensembles, but not all are performing as musicians – many work in management roles.

Less anticipated but no less common is the employment of music graduates in finance and banking, legal and consultancy.

Dr Robert Adlington, an associate professor of music at the University of Nottingham, credits these successful and varied outcomes to the highly desirable skills developed by music students during their studies.

In 2011, the Confederate of British Industry outlined the seven skills that define employability: self-management, team work, business and customer awareness, problem solving, communication, numeracy, and IT skills. Adlington says that music students develop all seven of these. By this measure, music graduates are among the most employable of all.

While some of these skills are acquired students of all subject – for example, team work, good communication, self-management – Adlington points out that music students have an edge. The experience of organising, hosting, and performing in events that are open to the public provides them with skills beyond those on other degree programmes. Few degrees require knowledge of customer awareness, or interaction with the public, for example.

James Lister studied music at the University of Nottingham but is now an associate with legal firm Charles Russell. His degree "taught a whole load of things you can't find elsewhere", such as public speaking and self-expression. He says that these skills, in addition to the "highly analytical aspects of a music degree", which enable graduates to read, digest and form an opinion on a huge amount of information, greatly aided his transition into law.

The employability of music graduates appears to be in for a further boost. In addition to covering the traditional elements of a music degree (composition, performance, theory, history and so on), new modules that are focused specifically on employability are set to be introduced.

"Students don't want to leave their future to chance anymore," says Adlington, adding that employability is "part of our core model".

Equally promising prospects can be achieved with less traditional, more hands-on degrees. The SAE Institute (previously known as the School of Audio Engineering) offers music courses that emphasise production values and teach students to a professional standard.

Jordan O'Shea, who graduated from SAE with a first in audio production, says the institute fast-tracked his career, allowing him to go it alone. He says:
"Without SAE, I wouldn't have been able to record my own album. It allows you to go from being a bedroom producer to being a contender." He adds: "Of course, there's no guarantee you'll be the next guy producing Adele."

Students are taught not to depend on having access to a studio, or support or funding from a record label. Since leaving SAE, O'Shea has set up a self-built studio. From it, he co-founded Bear on a Bicycle, an award-winning Oxford-based music and art collective that cracked the city's scene in under a year.

The collective's success is a reflection of how changes in the music industry allow artists to produce and publicise themselves. The internet means artists can publish, distribute, and promote their own work. These methods are nothing new, but if combined with professional knowledge and experience, it can be a winning, name-making recipe.

‘Galliano takes the Accordion to Vivaldi’, Paris – France

CD CoverThe website euronews recently interviewed Richard Galliano in Paris, to discuss his love affair with the classical accordion.

It has been a relationship, albeit once conducted in secret, which goes back many years:
“It might sound surprising but I’ve always played classical music on the accordion, since the age of 20, 21,” he says, “but it’s something very different to play on stage. I was scared of, I guess what you would call, stage fright. Tonight, I did what I have been terrified of doing ever since I was 20 years old, and I played classical in concert. My first idea was to play the music of Bach, because his style fits the easiest with the accordion. Sometimes I even feel as if Bach were written for the accordion. I started by playing the solo part, that is usually played by the flute, the oboe, or the harpsichord. Then I turned to Vivaldi. This was because, even though Vivaldi is very difficult music to play, even on the violin, the accordion has great range”.

Even so, how does Galliano feel Vivaldi or Bach would react to his interpretation?
“I’d like to think that it would please them because it is just another way of giving new meaning to their music. With music that’s so well known, you have to take a risk to get the most out of it. You can’t be scared to take it out of the comfort zone,” he says.

The star also pays tribute to his mentor, Astor Piazolla, mixing his four seasons in tango, to chime with Vivaldi’s classic. “Astor Piazzola was influenced by Vivaldi, and developed the same structure in his tango pieces. Here, we find the same format, the same search for melody,” insists Galliano.

Violin virtuoso Jean Marc Phillips Varjabedian is proud to say he was there at the birth of Galliano’s current ensemble.

“It’s been over 25 years since we first met. At the time I had a chamber orchestra, so I invited Richard to play some classical pieces with us. I think it was more or less his first experience doing this…I was a fan of Piazzola and we had the idea of creating a tango.

So Richard started writing transcripts for a set. And that’s how this adventure began…There’s always been a place for the accordion in classical music. Not least because the accordion was invented to replace the kind of small organ, which was played in private concerts. It’s normal to play classical accordion in Russia, for example. In the West, we were a bit behind the Russians on this. But I think it’s a good thing that a big star, like Richard, shows how well the accordion can work with Bach, or Vivaldi,” says Varjabedian.

Galliano and his ensemble are currently playing their Vivaldi set as part of a world tour.

Video: Dr William Schimmel, at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival – USA

Here is a video of Dr William Schimmel’s performance of Beethoven's ‘Egmont’ at Lincoln Center's 'Mostly Mozart Festival' in August 2013, New York.

New York Times music critic Anthony Tommasini wrote: The evening opened with the premiere of the accordionist and composer William Schimmel’s version of Beethoven’s “Egmont” Overture for solo accordion. This was no gimmick.

Yes, the piece is a novelty, charming and sometimes funny. But amid stretches of faithful rendering, Mr. Schimmel offers a bold gloss on the overture that makes you think about Beethoven’s music.

"The slow, somber introduction to Beethoven’s 'Egmont' Overture translated vibrantly to the accordion in Mr. Schimmel’s rendering. The introduction’s theme in stern, short chords sounded at once strange and endearing as played in reedy colors on the accordion. Passages in the original where the orchestra swells with sound were easily dispatched by the accordion’s bellows. During the agitated main section of the overture, stretches of hard-driving rhythms morphed into an intense tango. A plaintive passage took on a mournful Middle Eastern cast.

At one point, the piece broke into what seemed like subdued flamenco, complete with Mr. Schimmel’s soft, wordless singing. His arrangement of the overture was in the honored tradition of Liszt’s piano fantasias on themes from opera."

New York-based Dr William Schimmel is a virtuoso accordionist, author, educator, philosopher and composer. He has performed with virtually every major symphony orchestra in the USA, and his musical accomplishments are many and varied, including everything from founding the Tango Project to appearing with Al Pacino in the film ‘Scent of a Woman’, composing scores for Broadway shows to composing a test piece for the CIA Coupe Mondiale, and much else besides.

For nearly 20 years Bill Schimmel has been the moderator of the annual three day master class and concert series sponsored by the American Accordionists' Association. He is listed in ‘Who's Who in America’ and ‘Great Minds of the 21st Century’.

‘14 Years Ago’ – Renzo Ruggieri scores music for play, October 1999

Renzo RuggieriThe Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending October 29th 1999 reported that Italian accordionist Renzo Ruggieri had recently composed and arranged music for a play, then on a very successful run in Italy. Renzo continues to this day to compose, arrange, teach and perform, with many international successes to his credit.

Ruggieri Composes for Musical – Italy

Accordionist Renzo Ruggieri composed and arranged the music for the play ‘Tra Moglie e Marito’ (Between Husband and Wife), an adaptation of a short story by the same name written by Antonio Amutti. The play is presented by the ‘Scenari Paralleli’ theatre company, directed by Paolo Perelli (who also adapted the text for the stage) and features an impressive cast including Luisa Jacurti, Donatella Zapelloni, Ciro Ruoppo, and eight dancers. The choreography is by Franco Bellani. This humorous play is based on romantic relationships at the turn of the millennium.

Paolo Perelli wrote the following notes on the program: "The musical pieces and songs by Renzo Ruggieri, inspired by the music-hall of old, are the links that hold the play together, highlighting beautifully the rhythm and scenes".

The play, which opened in August at the Magellano Theatre in Ostia (near Rome), has been acquired by several companies for their winter tours.
