CNIMA header
Nathalie Boucheix and Jacques MornetVideo above: Anaïs Bessières, 19 years, a CNIMA student, plays a "Edith Piaf" medley during her second round.

For Category VI, Senior Variety, 2018 Klingenthal, the French music school CNIMA J.Mornet enjoyed tremendous success. First place was the excellent Radu Ratoi (Moldova) and following him were students of CNIMA J. Mornet in the next 5 places!

Students Diego Gatte - 2nd; Anaïs Bessières - 4th; and trainees Eglé Bartkeviciute (Lithuania) - 3rd; Zahodong Yao (China) - 5th; and Huang He (China) - 6th; had all followed several months of preparation at CNIMA and in particular two weeks of intensive training just before the competition under the guidance of Prof. Jacques Mornet.

In addition to its full-time training, the CNIMA offers a "Vacataire" formula which allows the accordionist trainee to choose from 3 to 20 weeks of full board, continuous or discontinuous to:
- To optimize musicality and technique and learn through exchanges with other students;
- To prepare international competitions;
- To prepare auditions and entrance exams in music colleges and universities around the world;
- To perfect oneself at the source in the "French style" and other styles.

CNIMA Jacques Mornet has been receiving students from all over the world for 22 years and language is never a problem.

Passing of Gene Van (1936 - 2018), Indiana - USA

Video: Time Is Once Again
Gene VanVideo above: Gene Van's last substantial composition (Video 3 above) is entitled “Time Is Once Again” performed by Joseph Natoli as a tribute to his dear friend, Gene Van.

This has not been a good year for accordionists, as we have lost so many important figures in the accordion world starting in late 2017, and we have unfortunately lost yet another accordion icon on 28 May 2018, Memorial Day. Gene Van peacefully transitioned to his final rest (hopefully filled with music), while his loving family was by his side for every minute of the previous three challenging weeks.

For those of you who may not remember the name Gene Van because he came a little before your time, he was one of those special individuals who had multi-dimensional talents and excelled in every one of them.

First and foremost, he was an incredible teacher who affected the lives of many many students, which is substantiated by the outpouring of love and sympathies on the “Gene Van Accordion” Facebook page as news started to spread of Gene’s 4:15am transition into the next life.

Gene so positively affected the lives of so many students, and they all reiterate that what they learned from Gene in music lessons and orchestra rehearsals is what taught them to appreciate striving for excellence and doing whatever it takes to succeed whether in music, their jobs, or in life.

Michael Bridge’s New CD ‘Overture’, Toronto - Canada

Michael Bridge CD coverCanadian accordionist Michael Bridge’s debut solo CD ‘Overture’ includes an eclectic mixture, with music ranging from JS Bach to Henry Mancini to Leonard Cohen to contemporary tangos and Armenian folk songs.

Bridge explains that “‘Overture’ is born from my passion for performing amazing music that shatters accordion stereotypes. Drawn from years of concerts, this unique cocktail reflects my passion for the multifaceted history and future of the accordion”. The tracks are listed on the CD covers.

Michael Bridge is a very active concert accordionist, often playing a digital button accordion. Named one of CBC’s ‘30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30’, he is internationally renowned for his dynamic stage presence and unique musical versatility. His repertoire – classical masterworks, baroque, jazz, world music, folk dances, contemporary classical, and digital accordion compositions – defeats all stereotypes concerning the limitations of his instrument. He made his solo orchestral debut with the Boston Pops Orchestra at 17, and has performed on four continents, now playing over 100 concerts per year.

Michael began playing the accordion at the age of five, and eventually studied at the University of Toronto with Joseph Macerollo. He has won several competitions, toured internationally, led master classes across the USA and Canada, and performed and adjudicated at festivals.

Fraser McGlynn (1940-2018), Scotland – UK

Fraser McGlynnLeading Shand Morino accordionist Fraser McGlynn, from Tarbert, Argyll, passed away on May 29th at the age of 78. He started his musical life on his dad’s old 2-row melodeon, and was largely self-taught. At 15 his brother bought him a new 3-row button accordion with 48 bass and a local player, Donald MacKay, explained some of the intricacies e.g. that it was possible to use a combination of the three rows and thus form scales. On leaving school he became a painter and decorator, then later a postman, but both jobs restricted his playing so the solution, in 1972, was to go self-employed at his trade.

He had formed his own band at eighteen with himself on lead accordion, Duncan MacLean - second accordion, Davie Scott on fiddle, Jim Flaherty on piano, Norman Smith bass, and Jackie MacLeod drums. Having failed a BBC radio audition in 1959, it was 1968 before they passed a second, with their first ‘Take the Floor’ broadcast going out that year. Along the way Fraser had become one of Scotland’s leading exponents of the 3-row British Chromatic accordion, winning the All Scotland Championship at Perth in 1962 and 1966. From the early 1980s, he worked mainly with a trio and guested at most of Scotland’s Accordion & Fiddle Clubs.

Fraser McGlynn made several albums of Scottish music, and also occasionally served as a competition adjudicator. He was well liked and greatly respected by his peers. His funeral will be held on Thursday June 7th at 12noon at Tarbert Loch Fyne Parish Church.

"Valentango" is a composition taken from the show 'Valentino è Tango!' dedicated to the myth of Rudolph Valentino and the history of tango. This is the exact transcription (I thank my student Lorenzo Bosica for help) of the performance in the album (Catalog: rruggieri11 Valentino e Tango CD or mp3 album), with improvisations also at the level of the arrangement.

The music is difficult to perform but, thanks to a very effective melody, lends itself to both concert situations and international competitions."
