New CD ‘Il Fisarmonicista’, Scotland – UKby Rob Howard |
‘Il Fisarmonicista’ is a new recording from Graham Geddes (accordion, keyboard, V3 sound module) and Dave Morrice (guitar and violin). Graham Geddes and Dave Morrice, best known for playing Scottish dance music, here play Continental and Latin American music, with some jazzy touches for effect. Accordion is the lead instrument throughout, with guitar or violin in support, and all underpinned by Latin or other rhythms from the keyboard to create a small combo sound. Tracks: ‘Bossa Dorado’, ‘Ballade Rabouine’, ‘My Blue Heaven’/‘Blue Skies’, ‘Caravan’/‘Brazil’, ‘Dutch Maid Waltz’, ‘Out of Nowhere’/‘Midnight in Moscow’/‘Lady Be Good’, ‘La Vie En Rose’, ‘Tico Tico’, ‘The Gentleman’, ‘Autumn in Rome’. This music for a hot summer’s day or evening, but will also be useful for those cold winters’ days when some sunshine is needed to brighten one’s mood. ‘Il Fisarmonicista’ is available either as a CD or as a download from Graham Geddes. ‘14 Years Ago’: Accordion Symposium in Paris in July 2000by Rob Howard |
Amongst all the details about concerts and festivals, the Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending July 28th 2000 included a report of an Accordion Symposium, held in Paris, France. This event was an appraisal of the accordion’s current situation in Europe, with reference to ideas for improving the accordion’s appeal, particularly for younger people. Important Accordion Symposium in Paris – France Contributed by Beniamino Bugiolacchi A very interesting symposium on ‘Accordion Manufacturing and Musical Perspectives’ took place recently in Paris during the Salon de la Musique. The event, organized by the council of the Cité, the Musée de la Musique and the Accordèon 2000 Association, was aimed at outlining the present situation of the accordion in Europe and promoting new musical perspectives capable of reversing the fortunes of an instrument that is less and less popular among young people. After a welcome by Honorary President Marcel Azzola speeches on several accordion-related topics were given including ‘Castelfidardo, cradle of the Italian accordion’ (Benjiamino Buggiolacchi), ‘Musical originality and industrial creativity’ (René Lacheze), ‘Italian manufacturing and foreign influences’ (Marco Galeazzi from Cemex), ‘The Midi accordion’ (Claude Cavagnolo and Sergio Tomassi), ‘The free bass accordion’ (Thierry Paillet), ‘The diatonic accordion’ (Marc Perrone and Massimo Castagnari), ‘Creation of an international notation system’ (Geir Draugsvoll), ‘Discoveries and music from the extreme margins’ (Pascal Contet), ‘How the accordion found its place in the classical repertoire’ (Pierre Gervasoni). Of particular interest were the debates that followed each speech, often provoked by well-known accordion historian Professor Pierre Monichon, US accordionist Peter Soave, Philippe Krumm and Patrick Quichaud. |
